Lookee here at what I just bought.... :D

... a 1994 Land Rover Defender!!

I've driven them for a while now in various guises, but this is the first one that I have actually owned, so I'm pretty chuffed! It came down to a choice of two, and this one met my budget so... there ya go!

It's in Perth, and I'm in Adelaide, so I'm still trying to figure out how to get it here (cheapest car transporter so far is $320), but in terms of hands been shaken on it and whatnot, I'm the owner

The landy is in great condition, is built like a brick shithouse, has been well maintained, and comes with the following toys:
  • Heavy duty suspension and rear half shafts
  • Dual battery
  • Auxiliary fuel tank
  • Snorkel
  • roof rack
  • bullbar/roobar - whatever you guys call it here
  • IPF spotlights
  • rear mounted spare wheel carrier
and last year the owner replaced the rear main seal, timing belt, clutch, new main gearbox and swapped out the transfer case for a discovery model.

Until I have it down here, some of the sales pics will have to do but yeah, I officially own a Defender!

And why would I want such a thing, I hear you ask? Well, seeing as I'm doing the round the world thing, the plan is to drive it from Australia to Australia, via South and North America, Canada, Europe, Africa and Asia. I'm hoping to get sponsorship, seeing as I'm now as poor as a church mouse, and I need to retrofit it over the up and coming months, because (a), I'll be living in it, and (b)I'll be in some pretty remote regions where self rescue is a must.

Soooo, any suggestions/advice/upgrades/downgrades/abuse, post it here. Fundraising ideas wouldn't go astray either (maybe Winamp wants to sponsor me? )And if ya get bored, throw my Landy into Paint Shop Pro and mod it for me

Hum, you might want do watch an old Hue Fernley Wittingstall show where he drove around the UK in a defender getting food for free or for trade.

His defender had some interesting modifications for cooking/sleeping.

Very nice looking Defender you've got there. No ideas from me about fundraising or mods to the vehicle. Your intended adventure sounds awfully adventurous.

Looks tough. Don't forget to take at least a basic tool kit and supplies (extra hoses, clamps, fuses, repair tape, light bulbs, box of nuts and bolts, tire repair kit with patches, 12v air compressor, etc).

They don't come much tougher than this, I assure you The nice thing about it is that it's a 300tdi engine (next up is a TD5), so no black boxes or onboard computer magickry to worry about. I'll be carrying sockets and spanners, replacement belts, hoses and jubilee clips for everything, repair kit and whatnot. Dual battery means I can switch to auxilliary if the primary fails, same with the fuel tank. One rear mounted spare, and I'll be putting a second on the roofrack. ARB winch at the front if I can get the cash together for it. And I had planned to hardwire a 12v compressor straight in, or else bolt in a second A/C compressor and run an airline from that. And a rollcage of course, for when I completely screw it all up To be honest it depends on funds, and what becomes available to me.

One thing's for sure though, I'll be posting pics as things progress.

Definitely need a winch. If money's tight, get a manually operated (hand crank) winch. But don't embark on such a trip without it.

Not a chance in hell am I getting a hand winch. About a month ago I dragged a 40 foot shipping container sixty feet across the ground using a block and tackle, It took hour and a half hours. Think I'd abandon the land rover rather than go through that again...

You're welcome to stay with us, wherever we're living when you go (we'll be moving this summer) if we're on your way.

I don't really know anything about Land Rovers - always see them at a distance... Do they have skid plates/undercarriage protection?

I'm still protesting the loss of the flying toilet.

I assume you have good fire-starting materials, a good hatchet, and a good water purifier, right?

Are you multilingual, or do you have a plan for communicating with people of different languages, or are you staying in mostly English speaking lands?

Don't forget to live before you die.
