Downgrade!

Yup, after taking a long, hard look at WinME, I decided that WinME is nothing more than Win98SE with all the features I DON'T EVEN use, like System Restore, WMP7 and internet games. So I DOWNGRADED to Win98SE.

It starts up slow like a sick bitch, but the rest of the trip goes like a dream. After heavy tweaking, it now runs everything around 20% faster than my WinME, which is sweetass.

I do miss a few things;
1. File extension prefix for easy searching (eg, press on keyboard "BMP" and it will take you to Windows Bitmap). It came very handy at times.

2. Single clicks in open/save dialogs - something I'm trying to get used to.

3. Space Cadet Pinball

BTW, if anyone here has Quake II, if you would be so kind as to rip track 9 as 44100 128kbps MP3... Wait, then how would I go get it? Never mind.

WinME is possibly the worst OSs Microsoft has ever released!
If you have enough RAM (128 MB or more) I'd suggest to upgrade to Win2k which is possibly one of the best OSs MS has ever released

Home is fine for about 95% of windows users. I've been using home since december 2001 and not once have i needed a feature from pro that home doesnt have.

EFS would be nice, as well as the group policy editor, but neither are a requirement.

Actually, i think the only real reason to get pro is its ability to work on dual cpu systems. You can still use a single hyperthreading cpu with home.

I've used 98 on one machine, and NT4 on another for years, without problems.

98 can be a little unstable if kept running for more than a couple of days, and, unfortionately, can't take advantage of the 1536mb RAM I've got installed; so I've taken the plunge and upgraded to Windows 2000.

2000 is much better than 98 in most respects; the only real problem I've got with it is that it uses the awful IE-bastardised version of explorer to browse files on your hard disk, which isn't as quick or sleek as the Windows 95 explorer. And it doesn't support my ditto drive, grrr!

Win2K has to be good, seeing that it seems to be the longest lasting modern MS OS. 95 is obsolete, 98 is being phased out as the result of XP. But Win2K, which is older than ME, keeps on cranking.

I might upgrade to Win2K, when I have the cash.

There are also the issues of how I use my comp; I format my drive C twice a month to keep my Windows install clean. I heard i will have a difficulty continuing that routine if I get Win2K, XP, etc. Anything on that?

I also heard that Win2K and NT both have problems running some programs.

Twice a month...jeebus. I remember using 98se an install used to last about 2 or 3 months, but with 2k/xp i think you'll find it stays fresh a lot longer.

And yeh, there are some compatibility issues, but they are rare.

Twice a month! I find that provided you don't keep installing and removing crap it stays fine. Particularly as it takes me days to get a system running how I like it again, what with finding device drivers, and installing software....

Win2k or XP is TONS better than any 9x OS. You don't need to reboot at all unless you're installing new drivers or patches for them. Much better memory management and support for more than 512MB of RAM(Put more RAM than that and 9x will give fits about it). Full Unicode support, no more multilanguage issues that plagued 9x.

9x line is dead, the only good reason to keep 98SE around is for DOS games support and maybe some games that won't run on 2k/XP even with compatability mode.

XP is quite stable. I have XP on my PC and I usually leave it on 24/7. according to the logs, my PC has been running for a little more than two months straight, which would be impossible to do with any 9x system.

Formatting twice a month is a little OTT. Once every 2 month as a max is fine for most PCs!

my 98se box currently has an uptime of 12 days 13 hours.

A friend of mine got his 98se box up for 31 days, till he just felt like re-booting it. I was there when it hit 30 days.

My Win2k box has an uptime of 1d 14h. Had to reboot cause of installing a new NIC.

That's kind of right - it's a "quick fix" version of Windows 98SE, with more bloat, more features, and more bugs.
