360 release titles versus PS3 release: 360 wins?!

This is a comparison of screencaps between the 360 and ps3 versions of Ridge Racer. It came out a year ago on the 360, but three days ago on the PS3. As Seen Here

And, almost unquestionably (shockingly!), the 360 version looks better...despite running on $200.00 cheaper hardware and being a year older.

A failure by the developers, or a true testimony to the staggering difficulty of developing for the ps3?

Well, I call that a failure by the developers. I mean, whether they meant to do it sloppy or not doesn't change whether or not they failed at the goal of making a smooth game.

...Although I guess you could argue they ported more of the game when they should have remade it completely, or vice-versa, but who knows what they actually did or how much effort they put into it. But the only advantage the PS3 has in those screenshots is resolution--and that only matters on, what, the 3% of households that have HD TVs with top-end resolution capability?

It's always the same when a new system comes out, quickly convert some of your old product for the new format, no matter how shonky it looks.

They did the same on a smaller scale when the DS came out and they rush released a copy of Ridge Racer that was basially a port of the old n64 version with a couple of touch screen features glued on top.

There is always a shockingly bad launch line up with most consoles, so easier to make a quick buck by cashing in on the game starved public by giving them something they are familar with, and as there is a lack of original product people will buy any old shit to go with their new shiny $500 console.

FTA:
is it just me, or does up0078, the ps3 shot, look exponentially better than up0080, the 360 shot...?

The only reason it looks better is because it is higher resolution and was photographed on a monitor capable of that resolution--in other words, the 360 wasn't outputting at the monitor's native res.

This will matter on only on HDTVs, and only on the small percentage of those HDTVs that have a native resolution of 1080p or higher. The PS3 outputs a higher resolution, but has to scrimp on textures to do this. That's what the photos are illustrating--it's give and take. You can have less obvious aliasing at 1080p, but you sacrifice texture detail because higher resolutions use up much more memory bandwidth. (A thing which the 360 arguably has more of.)
