basic ratings help

This is really stumping me. I can't get ratings to persist for any files.

I click a star to rate a song in the main window and the star becomes illuminated.

But when I play another file and click back onto the rated song the rating is gone.

I turned on "save ratings to file", but still the same thing happens.

If I right click on a playlist and click "Rate Items" and select a star nothing happens at all.

I'm sure I'm missing something very obvious, can someone help? Thanks!

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=332244

or this:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=332210

when i examine my tags in mp3tag for ratings, i see:

RATING WINAMP = 4

in extanded tags, which is crap and shouldn't be there.

UGH! my stuff is all messed up now... this is a bad bug!

actually, mp3tag seems weird too.

when i check an old file, it doesn't show "popularimeter" like it should, it shows "RATING WINAMP" for old stuff (rated pre 5.62) as well! so damnit, mp3tag is just adding to the confusion!

(RATING WINAMP is new with mp3tag 2.49)

is winamp still using POPM for id3 and RATING for vorbis?

dbpass...

r u sure you aren't trying to rate mp4, m4a files? winamp won't write those ratings to tags, those file types aren't supported. but it SHOULD write them to the ML.

i think mp3tag was confusing me. now i think winamp is still writing ratings properly, using 0-255 for id3/POPM, and 0-100 for vorbis. unfortuantely, i can't confirm any of this b/c of incredibly stupid and shortsighted changes by mp3tag.

MrSinatra, thanks for the responses. I'm 100% positive these are MP3s.

I've re-installing and I think I've combed through every setting, but when I click to rate MP3s the rating is still only there until I load another file, then when I come back it's gone.

I took a quick flash screencap of the issues I'm having. I still think I must be missing something obvious!

Sorry to post to mediafire, but the clip was slightly too big to upload here.

i wonder if its related to the bug i posted here:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=332285

what happens when you try to rate it in winamp in the ML?

what happens when you do other tag edits or apply RG? does that work? have you checked the files in mp3tag? do you have ape tags in the files?

Figured it out! I never use the media library so I never checked that option during install.

Apparently that disables the ability to rate tracks.

Re-installed with media library and all is working.

Thanks for the help!

interesting, and news to me. i tend to think that the design should be such that it would work without the ML, and that the devs should take a look at that. somewhat related to my link above too.
