Is there a program that can put all my music at the same sound level?

I've downloaded music and made a playlist in my WinAmp. The volume is up to high on one song, fine on the next, and maybe too low on the next.

Is there a program that can make all my music play at the same volume? Also, if there are several, which is user friendly and relatively simple to use? It would be great if it's free, but I don't mind paying for it. I've downloaded hundreds of free Christian songs and enjoy them all the time.

Might look at your Soundcard's Software for a Normalization or Loudness Equalization option. I know the Realtek HD Audio Manager in my current system (located in Control Panel) has a Loudness Equalization option in the Sound Effects section. On my previous system, my Soundblaster X-Fi Elite Pro had a similar Normalization option.

Those do on-the-fly calculations and adjust volume levels accordingly.

Mp3gain is great for mp3s (it's what I use, even-though it's been abandoned).

Have you tried to see what Winamp's Replay Gain feature can do. It has amps (to increase or decrease overall volume) that can be applied in addition to what RG does and/or for formats that don't support RG tags.

I swear by mp3 gain have done for at least 12 years now.

I wasn't aware it was no longer supported. I guess it's another sourceforge project that someone got fed up with making. There seems to be a lot of dead shoutcast projects on there.

RG is the way to go imo. it uses tags, works on many formats, doesn't adjust the audio itself, and gives u both track and album values, as well as anti-clipping.

The industry standard with regards to loudness measurement is ITU-R BS.1770. In practice ITU-R BS.1770 comes in two flavors, EBU R128 (Europe) and ATSC A/85 (Northern America). A third flavor, ReplayGain 2.0, claims to be almost all compatible with the "classical" ReplayGain 1.0 (see the various posts above).

You should note that the loudness measuring algorithm as defined by ITU-R BS.1770 by far outperforms ReplayGain 1.0.

The tool R128Gain is an external replacement for the Winamp build-in ReplayGain 1.0 compatible scanner / tagger providing options to choose among those various standards:

Yup, but only for software based playback via Winamp etc.

RG doesn't work for most car radios, TVs, Blue Ray Players or other hardware solutions.

If all you use is software based playback, ReplayGain should do just fine for you.

If you use multiple software programs, including non-RG compatible programs like WMP and iTunes, as well as things like the iPod and non-RG compatible mp3 players, I would recommend mp3gain. I have used it with great success on album mode in my mp3 library, and have those mp3s synced to my iPod touch and have no complaints when listening to music on shuffle. Apple's Soundcheck would glitch on the first second while adjusting the volume, but this takes software adjustments out as the adjustments have been made losslessly to the file (doesn't re-encode the file).

RG does work on some hardware, like squeezebox, rockbox, WfA, etc... it just depends. iTunes and WMP have their own standards.

there's no harm in applying mp3gain, and then RG after that either. I just don't use mp3gain b/c I don't need it anywhere I listen to music, and I don't want APE tags. mp3gain also only does album or track, not both, and its not as accurate.

presumably the OP wanted a way to hear his music at the same level in winamp, and winamp will do it for him via RG.

For Winamp....

1. Select multiple items in the playlist or local media library views (by using Ctrl+Click or Shift+Click etc.)
2. Right-click the first selected item > Send to > Calculate Replay Gain

You might want to go to: Winamp > Prefs (Ctrl+P) > Playback > Replay Gain tab first
and set things up according to personal taste, e.g. checkmark "Ask after all files are scanned" etc.

Naturally, "Use Replay Gain" needs to be checkmarked for the applied RG values to be used during playback.
