@Mattress: The British care. And Americans like me who follow world politics care.

I came for the hatred.
I stayed for the ballbag.

The Queen is still considered "Head of State" in the commonwealth countries and head of The Church of England. So, they do have a bit of pull in politics.

She is also the queen of Canada, and has exactly zero pull here. But we do get to spend a few million dollars on her when she decides to visit the colonies.
It is time Canada becomes a republic.

Also, she is the queen australia.

For the record, I don't care who charles is marrying. But I would support our queen through anything.

Technically, the Monarch has the power and control to veto any laws or regulations that have been approved by Parliament. This is a power that has never (to my knowledge) been invoked, and the seperation of the Monarchy from Parliament has gone on largely unaltered since the "Glorious Revolution".

That said, the Royal Family do have serious political clout when it comes to diplomacy, as they are often the public face of the British Isles, and heads of state visiting the UK will often dine at Buckingham Palace with the family, and other important members of British Society. They also make frequent journies to other countries, all around the globe to hold talks and conferences with heads of state, and to promote British interest.

This simple guide outlines the Queens powers.
