Jgheup is a spamming c*nt

Jgheup has managed to spam so much his URLs are actually showing up. Legitimate posters asking tech question often don't reach URL showing status...

I guess no ones modding at this hour, whatever that hour may be across the world...

Give Kofplayer Ops, so he can ban them, move the posts the to counting thread and edit them to the correct number then delete the original thread. Recycling!

One thing you can all do to help is, and I'll put this big and bold just so it gets the message over....

STOP REPLYING TO THE SPAM THREADS!!!

It's a pain in the arse to have to be shifting 60 plus threads as it is, but accidentally banning one of you lot because you happen to have posted in the thread is even more time consuming, given that we then have to go back and unban you.

For the record, I see a spam thread, open it, zip right down to end of the thread and hit the ban button on the last post, then stat the clean up, now as most of these spams are about a mile in length on the page it doesn't fuckin help if the last person posting in the thread happens to be a legit user, yes, I'm looking at you Bags as you got yourself a temp ban that way this morning, that I then had to reverse.

See a spam thread walk away from it, don't add your stupid spam pictures or spam poems, walk away.

/oh, and I've removed your signature as well Bags, again, don't need more confusion when aiming for the ban button.

Nah, that's next to useless, it relies on someone checking their mailbox to see the message, I dunno about any other mods, I check my mailbox less than I check this place.

If you click that in here, only Craig will get the mail anyhow lol, it only reports to the listed mods for the forum.

Well shoot, I always reported posts that I saw, little did I know it was mostly pointless to do so. Ah well.

Something has to be done about that void of time where the spammers go nuts when no mods are watching... Especially bad when they break the URL post count limit

That was silly of me, I certainly didn't intend to make your job harder and for that I apologize. It won't happen again.

I used to report most spam posts as well, I won't bother if it's just going to clog someones email.

Can't the report feature be changed to, for example send a PM-like pop-up message to the mods that are currently online?

I mean, if it's there anyway, then we (or better, the admin who would do the work) might as well put it to good use.

You are assuming there is anyone around to make those kind of changes to the boards?

If we could do that, we'd make changes to the registration process to slow them down and we'd make changes to the admin function to make dealing with those that do get through much easier than having to manually move 30+ threads, I myself have done at least 70 thread moves today alone.

As mentioned elsewhere, these forums are old and creaky and need some loving, sadly it doesn't appear high on the priority list.

If only we could employ some of the cheap Chinese labour that's probably behind all this spam to vet the signing up members we'd be home and dry...

Are there forum members that have the know-how, but not the adm. privileges that could be given temporary power to fix it?

Yes there are several forum members as well as mods that could apply various patches/fixes that should at least slow it down considerably. However I don't foresee any corporation handing over the keys necessary to make these changes to someone who isn't on payroll, the security risk is too high.

The sheer number of SPAM posts we are seeing lately would shock you. I think I can speak for all by saying I've never seen it this bad. Please bear with us during this time, I assure you we are doing the best to combat this problem with the resources we have been given. The fact that I've only seen two threads started by regulars regarding the SPAM is a good sign because the problem has been much worse than that.

Me too; so I guess the general consensus between mods is that the reporting is more trouble than it's worth? If that's the case, I'll stop reporting them and just ignore them completely to ease up on your work.

I guess it's understandable that it's not as easy or simple as I suggested before, but that's sad, because the mods get stuck all the spam work rather than just enjoying the forums. If there were no such thing as spam, I might be interested in "modhood" for a forum, but I'd hate being responsible for spam cleanup.

Is it safe to say that the best thing to do to a spam thread is to completely ignore it (no reply, no report)?

As far as reporting it doesn't hurt but as Jones pointed out it probably doesn't do as much good as users are led to believe. Only the mods assigned to that forum receive the email and usually by the time they check their email another mod not assigned to that forum has been along and moved the offending posts. I don't want to discourage users from using that feature but realize it has its limits.

As far as replying to the posts in my opinion it's easier if you don't. We will catch the vast majority of these posts and move them to the Evidence Locker regardless if they are bumped and for reasons Jones stated it just easier if you don't.

Thanks for the support in making our jobs easier.

You'd never find the counting thread again, believe me.

It could be worse, look what happens when the mods of a forum do nothing.

That's nothing.

I've seen nearly the entire first page of GD filled with spam numerous times.

I would personally add please continue to report threads in:

A. forums that people generally do not check

B. forums that don't have mods assigned to them.

I still don't see it would make a difference, I spend zero time checking my mail to see whose reported what thread etc

Too fucking busy moving 24 + threads in one window, moving half a dozen on another window while having a third window open nuking users who have yet to post anything but are about to spam away. (which I've just spent the last 10 minutes doing)

What makes you think I'll have another window open reading emails hahahah

The root problem here is the registration process is too easy for bots to bypass

The forums are so old as to not include the latest spam block stuff / spam clean up features.

Personally, I'd close registrations now and have them only approved by mods / admins, be a damd sight easier to vet signups then deal with live spammers, but that's not my call to make.

Eugh I feel your pain Jonesy, back when I used to admin trybalink I had great fun with the spammers, we got mostly porn, and bad porn at that, britney spears anyone?
Plus we were a small community, I dread to think what you get here in one day....

Would it be possble to maybe give some members the ability to ban people or remove threads? Maybe members who are around alot, I'm not sure on wether you'd be able to give people specific duties though....
I can imagine it just eats up your time in the end eh... but you do a great job, I rarely see an ounce of spam when I'm here =D

If I were begged, I may be convinced to do it, but even then it would only be short term, and it would likely cause me to see the forums as another job rather than a place to come and relax. It would indeed be hard to find volunteers from the regulars that understand how much is involved.
