I gave you my heart, and all I got in return was a cold shoulder

Would English be a better language if it wasn't so figurative? How about the regularization of grammar, syntax and spelling?

I gave you my heart and all I got was this lousy T-shirt...

indifference...

I am so important I feel the need to let it be known like a liberal discovering the internets for the first time. Uh hur hur hur. I also wash myself with a rag on a stick.

Meh, the language is beautiful, warts and all. And it keeps developing. Regularization would kill the language and keep it from developing in any kind of organic way. In addition to the many colorful regional dialects of English throughout many countries, there are also a variety of creoles, pidgins, and patoirs out there that are all beautiful in their own way.

Too much standardization and uniformity would make us all sound like fucking American newscasters!

Also, the institution that controlled the standardization would have too much power over our reasoning. Most, if not all of us, use language to reason things out. The ones creating the standards could manipulate public thought and opinions to a certain extent (for example, to say "He suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder" has a much different impact from saying "Dude's head got all fucked up in Vietnam").

And all poetry would become as inane as most rock lyrics.

I think that the ideal form of communication would be some sort of telepathy, which should, in theory, eliminate any sort of ambiguity...but until we figure out how to make telepathy work, english works well enough.
