Winamp 5.58 (build 2975)
Clean install, no 3rd-party skins or plugins
Language Pack: None (default German de-DE)
Skin: Bug occurs with all of Bento, Winamp Modern and Classic skins

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit)
Locale: German de-DE
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.40 GHz

Problem:
* New Previous/Play/Pause/Stop/Next toolbar buttons for Win7 taskbar feature not always work correctly.

Possible method of reproduction:

While running Winamp from desktop shortcut ALWAYS shows you those buttons on taskbar, doublecklicking on MP3 file DOES NOT ALWAYS show you these.

1. Run Winamp from desktop shortcut. This would not make any problems.

2. Doubleclick on any MP3 file. Now look on your taskbar and post back if you see any buttons.

Notifier disappearing

Winamp 5.58 (build 2975)
Clean install, no 3rd-party skins or plugins
Language Pack: None (default English US)
Skin: I am using Big Bento

OS: Windows 7 Home (64-bit)
Locale: English US
CPU: AMD Turion X2 dual core
Memory: 4GB RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon 3100 mobility
Sound: Realtek High Definition Audio
DirectX 11 (as far as I know)

Problem:
Although DJ Egg claimed the disappearing notifier was fixed in 5.58, I find it still disappears though less frequently than in 5.57. I am using my keyboard's media keys and my library is mostly mp3 and FLAC. Some other tidbits: most of the music has album art embedded per file, all files reside en masse in one folder. Some tracks played/skipped are in excess of 10 minutes.

Method of Reproduction:
1. Open Winamp
2. Play some music (shuffle is enabled)
3. After a few full tracks but mostly skipping in-progress songs, the notifier ceases to notify. I just tried it and on track 46 the notifier disappeared.

I have the standard list of included plugins; I don't use third-party plugins.

Unfortunately, although back then no-one could reproduce it, I have to repost this issue (from the old 5.572 thread - but the bug is also present in 5.56 and probably before).

Winamp 5.58
Clean install, and tested on 2 different PCs.

Skin: (Big) Bento
Menu bar enabled.

(Note: It could also be a Plugin issue, namely of the Freeform Skin Engine, but I post it here since I don't know.)

Click "Help" -> "About Winamp...".

Move the mouse towards the newly opened About box with the llama. Suddenly the box loses focus and disappears.

Sometime this happens after some seconds even without moving the mouse.

How to reproduce it definitely: Open the about box as described and then move the mouse to the volume slider. Wait there until the slider's "QuickInfo" tip appears ("Volume" or similar, depending on language. German here).

The about box will disappear!!

I think it's because the Info tip causes the about box to be stolen its focus and be sent to the background.

Best regards,
kzuse

PS: Anything new on this?

Might not be fully fixed yet Egg.

1. If the ML is closed with a Drive selected, after a restart > open ML, the Drives are shown but the RHS is greyed out. Clicking another view(Audio say) and then back fixes it.
Closing the ML in a different view doesn't show the same problem.

2. Also, looks like after closing with a Drive selected and with ML still open, the Rip & Burn view will be showing instead of Drive after a restart.

[edit]
I have 'Group CD/DVD ... ' selected in Tree Options.
When turned off, switches to Bookmarks(my first view item) instead.
Using Winamp Modern skin (doesn't happen with Bento/Classic)

Hi Ujay

Hmm, I can't repro the greyed-out issue, but can repro the 2nd issue
and only with Winamp Modern skin, not Bento or Classic.

And if 'Group CD drives under the Rip+Burn parent' is unchecked in Prefs -> ML -> Tree Options,
it then reopens to Now Playing, or whatever view is at the top of the ML tree.

Thanks

taskbar buttons don't work in Windshade mode

Winamp 5.581 - clean install - default English US
Windows 7 HPre 32bit - United States
CPU: Genuine Intel(R) 2.26GHz
RAM: 3GB
Graphics: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express
Sound: n/a
DirectX 11

Problem #1
3rd party plugins: none
Affected skins: Bento (normal); Big Bento
Toolbar buttons in Windows 7 taskbar (Play/pause/stop/previous/next) disappear when switching into Windshade mode for Bento and Big Bento skins.
1)Switch to one of the Bento skins if not already. Hover over taskbar; buttons appear.
2)Switch to Windshade mode. Hover over taskbar; buttons disappear.
3)Switching back to normal mode does not bring them back.
4)Switching to/between other skins, however, sometimes does. Reappearance seems to be at random.

Problem #2
3rd party plugins: none
Affected skins: Windshade Bento (normal); Windshade Big Bento
Toolbar buttons in Windows 7 taskbar (Play/pause/stop/previous/next) do not work while opening Winamp in Windshade mode for (Big) Bento skins.
1) Switch Winamp to one of Bento skins. Go to Windshade mode. Hover mouse over taskbar; buttons disappear.
2) Close Winamp while in Windshade mode.
3) Open Winamp. It should still be in Windshade mode.
4) Hover over taskbar. Buttons appear but do not work (with file in now playing list); i.e.: play button does not play file, pause does not pause, etc.
5) As in Problem #1, switching to normal mode does not make toolbar buttons appear, but switching to other skins sometimes does.

Note: Additionally, sometimes switching between skins makes toolbar buttons blank, i.e.: they are empty squares instead of having triangle, double lines, squares, etc. This happens randomly.

Observing this, it seems that the toolbar buttons do not work while in Windshade mode for Bento skins.

pardn:

I can reproduce both of your issues. Happens after I follow your listed steps.

Some of us cannot reproduce these issues, it seems.

I've attached 3 pics, the first 2 show what happens for me, when I follow the steps in your bug report. The 3rd pic shows something, which happens from time to time here. I just see blank buttons, but you already mentioned it in your posting as well.

Thanks for your clear and easy to read bug report.

Neither Winamp's integration, nor the Win7 Shell Taskbar plugin worked fine for me. I always had glitches. No idea, if the issue lies in the Winamp/Winamp Taskbar Plugin code, or if it's the fault of the Windows 7 API. The only thing I know for sure, is that other programs I used, which provide that feature never had such issues.

Winamp Installation Wizard still corrupts 3rd party plugins. (something to do with the DLL rebaser or some such)

VGMStream, MGME, 64thnote and probably more, affected.

-Winamp 5.581 (5.5.8.2985) - clean install [upgrade/reinstall]
-Winamp Language Pack used (if any) [none]
-System specs (mobo, cpu, ram) [ASUS P6T, Intel i7 920 2.66ghz, 6gig DDR3 Patriot Gamer RAM]
-Windows OS [Windows 7 x64 Home Premium, English]
-Video Card, Video Card Drivers version [BFG 8800 GT 512mb, v258.96 x64]
-Sound Card, Sound Card Drivers version [XFI Extreme Music, latest drivers as of today]
-DirectX version (start > run > dxdiag) [Latest Redistributable as of today]

To reproduce, install Winamp and the plugins then reinstall over the top or perform an upgrade from a previous version. The plugins will cease to work after the reinstall/upgrade.

Reinstalling the plugins renders them working again.

confirmed by multiple people and I believe one of the Winamp developers on the HCS forum, where discussion of VGMStream takes place.

sorting albums by "average album rating" bug

Winamp 5.581 - clean install - default English US
Windows Vista 32-bit SP2 - Canada

---> There is a full detailed thread about this issue here : http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=317928

In the Album view, if you choose to sort albums by ratings, you want to have the best albums first... so I guess Winamp stores the "average album rating" somewhere and I want it to sort the albums correctly. But:

1) Winamp seems to calculate the "average album rating" correctly. For example: if a 4-tracks album has rates like 3 - 4 - 2 - 4, the average is 3.25 so Winamp displays 3 stars. This is OK. Another 7-tracks album ratings are 4 - 5 - 3 - 5 - 4 - 4 - 2, so the average is 3.86 and Winamp displays 4 stars. Again: OK.

2) Winamp doesn't sort them correctly. The two previously rated albums are sorted like 3.25 > 3.86. What???

I think you can reproduce this bug easily...

I hope this will be fixed in the next release!

Ah, I just see 5.581 is out and the history says

* Fixed: [gen_ff] Tooltip issue causing dialog windows to vanish underneath Winamp

...

Does that mean, you fixed the bug mentioned by me above (and some months before, for 5.57)?

Didn't expect that, because nobody commented on my post anymore...

Also didn't install 5.581 yet, but if it is fixed, a big thank you for that!

Regards,
kzuse

@kzuse

Yes, it's fixed in 5.581

As stated in the first post, people just have to post the report bug here.
A reply or acknowledgement or any further discussion isn't necessary.
Though yes, sometimes I edit in "reproduced" or "can't reproduce", and sometimes I don't

Video Studdering Problem

I just installed the latest version of winamp and I’m trying to view some ASX streams. There is a problem with them freezing every second or so. It looks like it plays too fast, runs out of data, pauses until more data is buffered and then plays that too fast and repeats.

I did get a error when installing Winamp saying DirectX was missing but I believe it was an invalid error as DirectX it comes with the OS.

The streams I’m trying to view are:

Winamp crash; problem with playlist

Winamp 5.581 (build 2985) (started ocurring since v5.58)
Installed over old installation (v5.57->5.58->5.581) [I think that's not it, though, since we always install over the old ones; it's the very first time this is happening.]
Third-party plugins: About 8 or so, BUT this has been confirmed to appear without ANY 3rd-party plugins (Packed anyway in "Plugins_PART1.zip" and "Plugins_PART2.zip".)
Language Pack: Winamp-nl-nl (Nederlands, Dutch)
Skin: Bug occurs with all of Bento, Winamp Modern and Classic skins

OS: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (32-bit)
Locale: Nederlands, België (Dutch, Belgium)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ @ 2.GHz (1 cpu)
Memory: 1GB RAM
Graphics: nVidia geForce FX 5200 AGP 128MB
Sound: Realtek AC'97 Onboard Audio
DirectX 9.0c

Problem:
Winamp crashes (along with the Windows-process "drwtsn32.exe" right afterwards) whenever I copy an item to another playlist.

Method of Reproduction:
1. Simply copy any item to any other playlist using the "Send To..."-command. Any file-type will do.

Snapshots would be useless; they'd be in Dutch. The error is a standard "[Program] has encountered an error and needs to be shut down"-thing. Right after the one of Winamp is clicked away, the Windows-process "drwtsn32.dll" crashes also, with the same error notification. That's it.

Modern Skin hoses display of missing entries in playlist editor when "advanced title formatting" is turned off.

If you load up a playlist of tracks that don't exist (old playlist, perhaps) and start playing them, Winamp will just step through them looking for something that it can play. If you turn off "Advanced Title Formatting" then it will replace each item in the playlist editor with the title of the last track that successfully played (even if it's not in the playlist). This bug has existed for quite a while (year+), I just expected someone else to report it.

I don't think any of these details affect the bug, since I've seen it happen on multiple machines and multiple OS's, but here you go.

winamp crash playlist mulitple file select Send-To

Winamp 5.5.8.1 (x86) - Jul 12 2010
Upgrade from previous version
Language Pack: None
Skin: Bento

OS: Windows 7 Pro (64-bit)
Locale: English UK
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E8200 @ 2.66 GHz
Memory: 4 GB
Graphics: ATI Radion HD 2600 XT
Sound: ASUS Xonar D2X PCI
DirectX 11

Winamp crashes when trying to perform a "Send-To" action on multiply selected files in a playlist.

To reproduce:

Select one of your own user-created playlists from left-hand pane.
Add files to this playlist (for example, Add -> Add folder).
Select multiple files in main pane.
Select Send-To -> New Playlist.

Winamp then crashes every time. This also happens with other options in the "Sent-To" list. For example, Format Converter, etc. It does NOT crash if you select single files. It did NOT crash in the previous version.

Any more info you need, please let me know.

Thanks and good luck.

Baz.

New version of winamp also breaks playlist and multi-file transfers to ipod 5th generation, both with the included pmp support as well as with the external ml_ipod. Clean install had the same problem. Installing replacement playlist.dll mentioned above did not fix the problem. Finding an installer for Winamp 5.56 fixed everything.

Re: French language pack

Thanks for the report

I've attached the temporary fix below.
I will let the French translator know about the problem,
so hopefully it will remain fixed in our next release.

Note: I've also added the new Icon Library options to the Jump to File -> Extras page
though alas, I don't know the French translation so had to add it in English.

Installer issue

Firefox and Internet Explorer Winamp "Application Detection" plugins are enabled by default in the installer, even if they were previously not installed.

It seems that the Installer doen't detect the corresponding entries in the install.ini in Winamp's program directory, even when they exist and are set to "=0" (from previous installations where I already disabled the Browser plugin's checkboxes ).

Regards,
kzuse

kzuse: that appears to have been a purposeful decision along with a few other parts of the installer which cannot be skipped/remembered.

M3U Loading Bug

Winamp 5.581 (build 2985)
Clean install, no 3rd-party skins or plugins
Language Pack: None (default English US)
Skin: Bug occurs with all of Bento, Winamp Modern and Classic skins

OS: Windows XP Professional (32-bit)
Locale: Français
CPU: Intel Pentium M @ 2.00GHz
Memory: 1GB RAM
Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon X600
Sound: AC97
DirectX 9.0c

Problem:
There's a bug in M3U playlist loading function. I have an mp3 file called
" - Track 03.mp3". Note that there's a space at the beginning of the file name.
There's an extract of my playlist:

<SOF>
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:501, - 03 Track 3
- 03 Track 3.mp3
#EXTINF:225, - 04 Track 4
- 04 Track 4.mp3
<EOF>

When loading the M3U playlist, the player skips these tracks and behaves like the
files were deleted or renamed. However, if you open the file info dialog (in Winamp
Playlist) THE SPACE MENTIONED IS MISSING in the file name text box.
That means the M3U loading function ignores the space if it's located at the
beginning of the file name.

For example, Windows Media Player handles the loading correctly and loads these
mp3s without any problem...

Have a nice day

Certain panels don't return to foreground when winamp is selected from taskbar

Winamp 5.581
Clean install, no 3rd-party skins or plugins
Language Pack: None (default English US)
Skin: Bug occurs with Classic skin

OS: Windows XP Pro (32-bit)
Locale: Greek
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.16GHz
Memory: 2GB RAM
Graphics: On board Intel G45/G43 Express
Sound: On board
DirectX 9.0c

Problem:
When returning to winamp by selecting it from the taskbar, in certain occasions the main panel and/or other panels (equalizer, playlist) do not get restored from the background. The problem is reproducible by very subtle gestures.

Method of Reproduction:
1. Open winamp and have equalizer and playlist visible
2. Give focus to winamp's main panel by clicking it anywhere
3. Move the mouse over any widget of the main panel that produces a tooltip
4. Give focus to either equalizer or playlist by clicking anywhere on them
5. Move mouse away and select another application and make sure its window hides winamp, or most part of it, in order to observe the problem
6. Bring winamp to foreground by selecting it from the taskbar
7. Only the panel that was last selected gets in the foreground

Broken Win7 Taskbar Buttons & Forgotten Main Mode Media Library View

Winamp 5.581 (build 2985) - Clean install
No 3rd-party skins or plug-ins
Language Pack: None (default English US)
Skin: Bug 1 occurs with all of Bento, Winamp Modern and Classic skins
Bug 2 occurs with Bento and Big Bento

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Locale: English UK
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.40GHz (2 CPU's)
Memory: 4GB RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4870 PCI-E (Latest drivers)
Sound: Realtek High Definition Audio (Latest drivers AFAIK)
DirectX 11

Bug 1:

Problem:
Windows 7 taskbar buttons acting flakey, don't work in Windowshade Mode, icons disappear in Main Mode but still function. Appears to be connected to Windowshade Mode docking.

Looks like the same problem user pardn was having.

While in Windowshade Mode with docking ENABLED the taskbar buttons appear but are non-functional. Switching to Main Mode the little icons inside the button boxes disappear but the buttons are now functional.

While in Windowshade Mode with docking DISABLED the taskbar buttons appear and are now functional. Switching to Main Mode the icons in the button boxes are sometimes back and the buttons still function correctly.

Switching back and forth between Main and Windowshade Mode sometimes brings back missing buttons/icons but never fixes non-functioning buttons.

Method of Reproduction:
1.Load up Winamp and switch to Windowshade Mode and make sure window is docked (Right click - Window Settings - Docked Toolbar - Top).
2.Note taskbar buttons now not functional.
3.Switch to Main Mode, taskbar buttons should be there but with missing icons, will function though.
4.Switch back to Windowshade Mode and undock, (Right click - Window Settings - Docked Toolbar - Not docked).
5.Try taskbar buttons. Should now be functioning while in Windowshade Mode (if buttons have completely disappeared shut down Winamp then load back up).

Try this cycle a few times to see that the instant the Windowshade is docked the taskbar buttons become unresponsive.

As an aside, how long have Main Mode and Windowshade Mode had separate 'Docked Toolbar' settings? Windowshade mode can be set to dock at top of screen but whilst in Main Mode 'Docked Toolbar' can show 'Not docked'. When set to dock at top of screen with auto hide enabled this window will auto hide itself too, just like Windowshade Mode. Never remember this happening in older versions. A feature I've just never noticed before or something new?

Bug 2:

Problem:
Main Mode Media Library view is forgotten and defaults to 'Local Media' when Winamp is shut down while in Windowshade Mode. Originally, the last used view was remembered on start up, irrespective of which mode Winamp was shut down in (Windowshade or Main). Now the view is only remembered if Winamp is shut down whilst in Main Mode.

Method of Reproduction:
1. Load up Winamp in Main Mode and select a view, i.e. 'Most Played'.
2. Switch to Windowshade Mode and then shut down Winamp.
3. Load up Winamp again and switch to Main Mode, Winamp now shows 'Local Media' instead of 'Most Played'.

Contrast this with

1. Load up Winamp in Main Mode and select a view, i.e. 'Most Played'.
2. Shut down Winamp while still in Main Mode.
3. Load up Winamp and notice Main Mode Media Library view is still on 'Most Played'.

[Edit --> DJ Egg]
#1 = Known, but a bit sporadic & tricky to reproduce...
#2 = Reproduced. Thanks. For me, it always shows the Video view (if eg. Recently Played or Most Played were the active view on exit).

Preferences Dialog Removes File Associations from Vista

Winamp Pro 5.581 (build 2985)
Winamp plug-in details attached
Language Pack: None (default English US)
Skin: All testing done with Big Bento
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic SP2 (32-bit)
Locale: English US
CPU: Intel Core 2 CPU @ 1.8 GHz
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon X1300
Sound: Sigma Tel High-Definition Audio 6.10.0.5514
DirectX 11

Problem:

Preferences Dialog Removes File Associations from Vista

The associations feature in the File Types screen of the Preferences dialog is broken on my PC since updating to 5.58x Pro on Vista Home SP2. After a clean install of Winamp (but before first use of the dialog), the associations are correct, as shown by Windows control panel and by my tests using Win Explorer. After making any change in Winamp Preferences/File Types and then clicking Close and Allow in the UAC prompt, all but three file types now show as assigned to "unknown application" in control panel. In other words, Winamp has cleared the old assignments but failed to write the new ones. The list shown in the File Types screen does not change to reflect this failure, meaning that the associations shown no longer correspond to those shown in Windows control panel.

When files are played from the Winamp UI, they play as expected. The problem is only evident when using another program like Win Explorer to play music or video files, in which case Windows shows a message that no application is associated with the file type. Since not everyone uses file associations to play files in Winamp, people could have this problem and not be aware of it. Unfortunately, I play files by association frequently.

From Win Explorer, if I now use the browse option to select Winamp as the default application for a file type, the change does takes effect but only until the next time that Winamp's Preferences dialog is used. Associations edited via Windows control panel are also undone later by using the Winamp dialog. Oddly, Windows Explorer still shows the correct Winamp icon for music files, even though clicking on a file will not play it.

Related options in the File Types screen also do not work properly. For example, the Winamp agent appears in the system tray but always fails to restore associations. I have tried all combinations of settings in this screen with no effect on the problem. I also tried using the Winamp Backup Tool to preserve the initial installation settings, thinking that I could simply restore settings rather than reinstall Winamp. However, the Backup Tool failed to restore associations.

Once the associations have been trashed, the only way that I can restore the whole list is to do a clean install of Winamp 5.581 (including purging the registry) and then to never, ever use the Preferences/File Types screen. However, if I do a clean installation of 5.575 Pro, the association problem does not occur and the Preferences dialog works as expected. This problem came in with version 5.8x.

Just to be clear, this is not a case of associations being stolen by another application. The problem happens immediately after the UAC prompt that follows on closing Winamp's Preferences/File Types dialog, and the associations are removed, not reassigned. I have no media-related apps running in the background.

Winamp is installed in C:\Winamp, in an account with admin privileges (the only user account on the machine). Installing the 5.581 update has no effect on the problem.

To Reproduce:
The problem is reproducible on my PC after associations are edited in the Winamp Preferences dialog:
  1. Install Winamp 5.580 or 5.581 on Vista SP2. Run Winamp to initialize it but do not open the Preferences/File Types dialog. Close Winamp.
  2. Verify that (say) Mp3 files are associated with Winamp: click on an Mp3 file in Win Explorer and Winamp should launch and play it.
  3. Now open Winamp's Preferences /File Types dialog and remove an association (for say WMA).
  4. Click Close and then Allow at the UAC prompt. Close Winamp.
  5. In Win Explorer, again click on the still-supported file type from step 2. The error message is "Windows cannot open this file...".

Note: the extension list in the attachment below is correct only until association edits are applied in Winamp. After that, the list is incorrect.

@retroman: sorry tl:dr. But I got the gist of it. This is a known issue (see the main forum). When you want to change file associations you need to.

RIGHT CLICK the winamp short cut.
Select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
Accept the UAC prompt.
Go into the preferences and make your changes.
Now quit winamp.

Next time you run all will be fine. Your changes remembered.

In Vista or Win7 - if your user is in the "Administrator User Group", this is very different to "Running With Administrator Privileges".

(And this is by design. You will soon get used to it. And no, you cannot make it like XP)
