Winamp would be my favourite media player...

If only it could auto-organize my music the way itunes does.

I use itunes because of that one feature, if Winamp would make that change it would be the deciding factor in my switching to Winamp.

If only Winamp was like....., what a stuped premise.
If you don't like Winamp the way it is, use someting else. If you like iTunes that much, use the damned thing. But don't come here complaining that Winamp is not like whatever player you are used to, because it isn't and hopefully never will be.

winamp would be my favorite (all in one) media (instead of .mp3) player if:

it had much more full featured and widely compatible video playback ala VLC.

honestly though, it's an entirely minor thing and i love winamp for all purposes audio.

Yeah, how dare you ask for an additional feature, let alone one lots of other players have these days.

Don't you know Winamp has to remain exactly the way God created it in 1997?

eh, honestly i'm entirely happy with winamp the way it is... or was it was? i don't know anymore, point being i doubt winamp's original creator even cares if it's maintained at this point (unless that's (formerly known as) will?) beyond some slipshod AOL contract noose, so really winamp shouldn't aspire to over-reach and be VLC too.

winamp is still the best audio only media player, probably always will be.
VLC is still the best video only media player, probably always will be.

in conclusion: if ain't broke, don't fucking break it trying to tart it up.

Er, actually Winamp is already trying to be VLC, last.fm and a CPU stress testing suite (disguised as playlist generator). It just can't move or rename files.

Yeah, yeah, priorities. But unfortunately it's not the Winamp developers that are setting them.

don't install what you don't like and don't expect a screwdriver to function as a drill.

It's a media player. Not an organizer. Not a fucking coffee machine. More is less.
Oh well, DVD functionality would be sweet.

I have used old screw drivers for drill bits.

The comparison still stands - You can use it, but obviously a normal drill bit would've worked better.

fix'd

If you have a library based player, using it to organize files certainly makes more sense than all the other crap added at AOL's behest (or DVD playback for that matter (though adding support for a dying format would be strangely fitting for a player that's becoming more and more irrelevant), or any video playback for that matter - face it, Winamp is still about the worst video player available).

Except it already is (and "don't install it if you don't like it" would apply to any new feature as well).

But

this isn't even true. The pmp plug-ins are doing just that, and more complex things like wrestling with the iPod database and Apple's repeated attempts at sabotaging 3rd party software.
You could as well say that that's unreasonable and people with portable players should use some standalone software to sync them.

You haven't tried CCCP + CoreAVC + Media Player Classic (Home Cinema), have you?

Install CCCP, "get" a copy of CoreAVC, install both, then go to Start, Program Files:

Combined Community Codec Pack, Filters, FFDshow Video Decoder Configuration --> set H.264/AVC format to "disabled" so that CoreAVC does the job and enjoy.

I have 1080p anime blu-ray rips with FLAC audio that VLC throws a shit-fit at. My CCCP+CoreAVC+MPC HC setup runs it like a champ.

Mind you, I'm on a 1.73 GHz laptop with 1 gig of ram, and a 128 MB shared video card (so really 64 MB).

Ah. I'm currently using ffdshow or MPC's internal filters for everything, which is fast enough for a 3GHz Core 2 Duo. I used to use the free beta version of CoreAVC (along with lots of other filters) on my old P4 and it really made a difference there.

and media player classic is ugly, despite being rather lightweight.

Because it matters what the player looks like in full screen mode, right?

Try playing videos with multiple subtitle files embedded with effects. I've never had success with VLC playing them properly, never mind trying to play H.264 content with it.

first of all i never said that, the point being media player classic while lightweight isn't very feature rich either, i just never got into it, sides it's mainly just WiMP's bastard child anyway...

as far as H.264 i downloaded a sixty second sample clip of a KISS concert from this (http://www.dvd-guides.com/downloads/...codecs-samples) website which should be in this format but actually had a .avi extension and it played perfectly, no stuttering, errors, garbling or anything else really and i'm also running at least one other program that uses around a gig of memory all to itself, you enjoyed being proven wrong i hope..... ?

[edit] if you guys have any specific examples of so called problematic video file types, i'd love to watch them on VLC [/edit]

as far as H.264, what's the file type extension for those? and i'll give it a shot and report back, i mostly watch hi-def stuff in .mkv anyway.
Most high def stuff in .mkv is H.264, but mkv is just a container. H.264 can have a .avi extension. My laptop can handle high def stuff, just not with VLC. It throws a shit-fit and can't keep up with decoding it, while MPC-HC and CoreAVC plays it just fine. And even the stuff that VLC can keep up with, it doesn't handle subtitles worth a damn. Many occasions where I've seen two separate subtitle tracks overlapping each other.

If you want to try some 1080p H.264 stuff, go to apple.com/trailers and grab their 1080p movie trailers. If you want to try an anime in 1080p Blu-Ray with 24bit FLAC audio, try these. It's batch format, so just select 1 episode (or more if you like it). Beware: they're 1 gig each.

[edit] That KISS sample is a horrible judge of H.264. It's LOW resolution and LOW quality. I just ran 6 instances of it and hardly slowed me down. [/edit]

Sorry for the delay, cable decided to go out.

But yes, a computer that's sufficiently powerful enough, VLC will decode H.264 just fine (though CoreAVC will handle it better, and would ultimately lead to less CPU usage when playing it, which would mean less heat and less power usage. Plus VLC has never handled subtitles worth a shit for me). Still, when VLC can't handle them on my laptop but CoreAVC and MPC-HC can, that should tell you a lot about how well my setup works...

The "episode" you grabbed was a batch torrent with like 24 episodes, each a gig in size. Your torrent client should give you the ability to download just one of the episodes in the torrent.

VLC is not the bastard child of any of these. It's a completely different animal. It does not use any Windows codecs. Thankfully.

BTW- It's also probably illegal in the US. If it was hosted in the US, the web would be gone..... Besides it's reliance on intellectual property largely owned by MPEG-LA, it also has decryption code that is very illegal.

It's probably a felony.

who insinuated that VLC was one of the bastard children or inbred ones in the first place?

i first stated (wrongly) that WiMP was the bastard child of WiMPyC (classic) and then later agreed that i'd said it wrong before when you pointed out the reverse was accurate.

Try the Winamp Wishlist, there's a bigger chance developers will actually see your post (normally cross-posting is frowned upon, but in this case it should be ok - or ask a mod to move your post (and delete all the useless replies along the way)).

Or check out foobar2000 and Mediamonkey (the latter is more like Winamp, but the former is what the cool kids use nowadays).
