So Long And Thanks For All The Fish

The account I used to register at WA hasn't been active for years. I logged into the forums today, saw all the threads and couldn't believe the activity. Then I started reading them and I have to say I'm going to miss the place.

Some of the members here have literally seen me through some of the most important moments of my life. Of particular note was one member who I've not seen in one time, but nevertheless spent almost 8 hours of her own time talking to me through a very low time. Thanks missyob, wherever you may find yourself.

These forums, somehow, are like an old friend to me. I may not visit often anymore, but when I come back, they welcome me as if I'd never left. They're an online home, if you will, where I might always turn for advice and friendship.

So many of us share life changing events here. I always found it heartwarming how we tell our family, tell our friends, and last but not least, tell our friends over at Winamp. The people here are the closest 'online' friends I have and I suspect that this similarly holds true for many other members.

I'll be sending my contact information via PM to some people here that I'd like to stay in touch with. Thanks to all of you for making me feel so welcome here over the years. I will truly miss this place.

-Matt

Wish I could change the username, and only an occasional lurker here, but WA is opened daily and loved forever here. Nothing will change.

This post is so i can snatch a copy of my likkle green man... dunno where the original is though I come across the little fecker lurking on some old HD's every now and then..

jayz though as ye say k_rock it's gonna be sad to see the place go - kinda scroogy to do it just afore Christmas like but there ye are... i know guy's are getting it together to move as much stuff as we allowed and to try make a new home but it's not gonna be the same in a way...

This was the first place I joined up at as i made my way into computers and apart from being the idiot it got me through a very dark period in my own life (Nothing to do with 56k dial up eithere lol)..

Personally I think it is something that should be preserved as is and allowed to continue. WinAmp is a part of internet history imho and I just think it is wrong to simply wipe away 15 years work, not only by the software programmers/developers but by the community as well. In some respects I see it as belonging as much to the community that has supported and contributed a great body of work and not just ownership by some corporate body. Without the community behind it contributing the amazing visuals, plug-ins, ideas, support then winamp would have been gone long ago.

I'll probably go over to the new place in the next day or so but it is gonna be sad to see the original decimated. I know I owe it a lot for helping me to keep the last vestiges of sanity (the dark place I mention above)... it's been great knowing you all in our little virtual incognito world....

I wish you all well and happiness ....

again...so, many friends and sort of family...complete with problem children and occasional outbursts...

I've been an active member on two/three versions of winamp.com. Through all of that I have had wonderful conversations, equally low points and some tirades of my own doing, spent some time as reviewer and self-destructed (lol).

I actually am quite sad...and heartbroken that things are going this way. Disbelief is a better way to describe it.

A Special Heartwarming and sincerely 'I will miss you' is implied to all that I have known.

This place tells more of me than anything else I think. I joined when I was a 16 year old annoying kid, and I'm a 29-year old father now. This place taught me English and so much more.

I've tried to put anything sensible here for like 5 times now but nothing works. I love you all but I'm not going to list names, I'd describe the things I've been through here but I don't like to put a spotlight on myself, I'd make a list of memorable threads but we all already know them. The forums.winamp.com tab was always open in my browser and the first tab on the left. This place is a living thing to me, and I'm far from ready to bury this.

I wish all high profile guests were as nice.

Complete dickheads and stiffs included James Drury (the Virginian) who I intentionally spilled coffee on and James Arness (Gunsmoke).

I was thinking the Duke must be an equal dickhead. I was wrong. Mr. John Wayne was really "the Duke". MTM was and probably still is a lady of impeccable quality. They didn't treat me like I crawled out from under a rock. Wayne stuck a C note in my hand for being a good steward.

And I'll tell you boys... I'd have to go far to run into a gal who was as sweet and as just knock out gorgeous as Audrey Landers. No.. Judy was hot. Audrey was indescribable.

They all had class. And not the kind you can buy,

I was thinking "Oh shit another bunch of John Grays assholes" I was wrong. Good folks.

I wonder if they bought any of Grays properties. I hope not. I still own one. It's a gated community with no houses, sewer, water or anything else... but I own a lot. It's sort of sliding downhill now.. And I did have another one, but it's underwater. Fortunately my lot didn't have a house on it when the Pacific Ocean reclaimed some land.

But the end of John Grays real estate adventures is another story too.

But look. If he wasn't paying me pretty well and a half...... I never would have owned a couple house lots that ended up being worthless.

When you shake hands, make sure you count your fingers Mr. Gray gave me about $40K when I worked for him and I got stung for $6K. I wasn't bitching at the time and I'm not gonna bitch too much all these years later.

I'm gonna blame the ocean more than John Gray. He took a bath on it. Of course, he did have about $250 million dollars to take a flyer.

13 years is a long time....wonder if anyone will try to buy the domain name once AOL lets it slide.

I am so important I feel the need to let it be known like a liberal discovering the internets for the first time. Uh hur hur hur. I also wash myself with a rag on a stick.

If AOL doesn't sell off Winamp then they will likely keep the domain forever.

That behavior is common. Dynamix was dissolved early 2000s but Activision still keeps the domain.

No telling on the domain. It expires in a year. I'm still waiting on the little Chinese guy who got hold of mine. It expired and again I wait.

Never know but if AOL doesn't keep it and no one has a back order up it will be bought by someone and turned into a junk site.

Man...so many many memories. Glad the forum is still up so that I can at least post a proper goodbye to Winamp, Nullsoft, and all the community members. Thanks for letting me be a small part of all the craziness I wish the past and present Winamp developers success in whatever their futures hold for them.
