Why is it so big?

at a guess you're using Vista / Windows 7 where the OS has some issues with menus where it is possible to get an extended menu width like you're experiencing as the menu will increase in width to display longer items but it won't revert to a smaller width as appropriate. normally it should correct itself after restarting Winamp.

I'm running XP, and this has been persistent for a while now. I can't say whether it was like this when I first installed it, but a clean reinstall didn't mend anything.

Thanks for the help, though. Any other ideas?

never is easy, heh. only thing i can think off is to see what happens if the skinned menus are disabled (preferences -> media library -> appearance). if that doesn't work then maybe there's something else on your system which is affecting the graphical style, if so then you'd need to try to add Winamp to it's exclusion list if it has one.
