Best Guitarist

Who is the best guitarist ever? Don't mention Tool or something because I mean like real rock not alternative with just heavy chords and no riffs. I was going to do a poll for this but I knew I would leave someone out that should really be in there, so just post who you think it should be.

I think the best are maybe

Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
Eddie Van Halen (Duh! Van Halen)
Eric Clapton
Bruce Springsteen
Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
Joe Perry (Aerosmith)
Pete Townshend (The Who)

Whatever. I wasn't gonna speak for everyone. This is an opinion thread. What band is he again? I thought he was Dream Theater.

steve vai is a perennial favourite, along with tom morello (i know it's not "traditional" guitar playing, but he's up there with the best, and innovative to boot). i would start a "best bassist" thread (being a bassist) but nobody would reply

also yngve malmsteem (spelling) is awesome on guitar.

Joe Satriani is his own guy. I don't think he has a band. Anyway, he is one of the best Guitar players I know of.

Joe Satriani plays alone as far as I know. Check out "Flying in a Blue Dream", you might recognize it. <edit>You might recognize "Always With Me Always With You" too</edit>

He and Dream Theater are coming to a club about 10 miles from me sometime this month! WOOT! /me has died and gone to heaven lol

Anyway, he's on my top ten.

Kirk Hammett
Yngwie Malmsteen
Dimebag Darrell
Randy Rhoads
Van Halen
John Petrucci
Jimi Hendrix
Joe Satriani
prolly a few more that I can't think of offhand

in no particular order

Surprised at how limited most peoples musical outlook is (or maybe I'm not).

There are many fine guitarists on the lists so far, but try getting away from rock if you want to hear some of the better musicians on this planet.

Pierre Bensusan - France
Martin Simpson - Scunthorpe
John Chibidura - East Africa
Django Reinhardt - Belgium
Paco de Lucia )
John McGaughlin ) Friday Night in San Fransisco
Al Di Meola )

Plus many others it would be pointless naming. My mate Dave for example .

finally, a "Best ____" thread I have can't answer. Basically, I don't enough guitarists to make a good decision.

I will say this, though... I like like really thin salted (just enough) cheese. Especialy New Yorker American cheese. Try some! Ask for it at your local ACME.

'tis a shame. There is so much more to the guitar beyond flamboyant riffs and destruction of property. I can't claim to be a big fan of the instrument, but in certain hands, it can become extraordinarily versatile.

Erm... Wrong, wrong, wrong. Joe Satriani has no band and is not related to Dream Theater, eek.

John Petrucci(from Dream Theater) is one of the best guitarists out there, IMO.

An observation, if I may. This is AeroLed's thread. If you read carefully he asked us to name who we thought was the best "real rock" guitarist. To make an off-handed assumption that "most peoples musical outlook is" limited, solely based on this thread, is irresponsible and insulting to me (and other's I'm sure). For the record, I like a wide variety of musical genres.

dawg who is Tom Perry? There is a Tom Petty and a Joe Perry, but you got them mixed up i guess.

I am so stupid agin I jumped to conculsions. I went to AMG Music Guide and looked up Joe Satriani and it said he had a formal connection with Deep Purple. I just assumed he was in the band. Anyway, the guy's name is Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple. Ok it said that during a tour Blackmore quit the band and was temporarily replaced by Satriani. So I was sort of right.

frank zappa's a pretty good guitarist, as you can hear on the album "Shut Up 'N Play Your Guitar". i'm not going to defend him as being one of the very best though.

I gotta agree that Joe Satriani is one of the greatest guitarists out there.
Jessie Cook is a fantastic guitarist, without a doubt one of the best in the world.
She doesn't play Rock N Roll, but Charo is probably the best classical spanish guitar player alive today.

My pick: Duane Allman
Why?
Because he had a style noone else could ever match.
Guitarist's like Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Pete Townsend,
Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, Alvin Lee, BB King...
stopped playing...and stood in awe when Duane played.

And when he died...noone took his place.
They couldn't do what Duane did on the ole Sunburst Gibson Les Paul,
with an old glass pill bottle for a slide.

No one really "owns" a thread. As soon as you decide to share your opinions on this forum, you risk being concurred with, disagreed with, or even ignored. This is a public place; as much as you have a right to give an opinion, others do as well.

If you look over the original question again, it reads in two parts:
Who is the best guitarist ever? Don't mention Tool or something because I mean like real rock not alternative with just heavy chords and no riffs.

Now, this is open to interpretation, but the way I'm sure UJ read it, as did I, the first part was most important: Who is the best guitarist ever? The second is just a polite jab at alternative enthusiasts, calling the likes of Tool not "real rock".

Because virtually all replies ended up with a rock artist, it only seemed sensible to assume that everybody was limiting their selves to the (very) limited world of rock guitar. There is much more to the guitar then that, as UJ so clearly pointed out. UJ, I don't think you need to apologize. If you can see the musical world beyond rock, more power to you. You've got a right to that opinion.

I think the reason everyone got up-in-arms was NOT because he suggested going outside the rock genre, but because he basically called everyone who had posted a closed-minded idiot. I personally listen to a lot more than rock (take a look at my playlist someday), but I named my favorite rock guitarists for the sole reason that Aeroled DID say "I'm talking about real rock." The way I personally interpreted that was, he wants rock guitarists. The second sentence clarifies the first.

Just because a person prefers one genre of music above all, does not make that person closed-minded or limited. It means, he or she can perhaps relate to that type of music better than others; maybe it portrays their emotions, or maybe it reminds them of a certain era they enjoyed.

I also don't feel that rock is "very" limited in and of itself. If you look at all the different bands that could be considered "rock" you'll find quite a bit of differentiation. Take heavy metal, for instance. Listen to The Gathering, or Nightwish, or Dream Theater, and you'll see that they all have a very distinct sound to them. Or try out Yngwie Malmsteen, especially his symphony songs.

So yes, I'm a bit offended too, not that he brought up other genres, but that I was told I am "limited" and therefore closed-minded.
