You know how many books I read this year???

NONE!!

Ain't read no books past 5 or so years actually.. I read a lot at work and online.. Enough to equal quite a few books.. Why would I want to read more than that? Besides, I'm more a visual person.. I love me movies!!

Mr. Trancer Maniac:.

*Admins/Mods: My sig too big? There isn't a rule that I see that says otherwise..

Which one would be the number one on your list? I am really not a read, but am planning to start soon. Can you guys recommend me a great book? One that isn't 10,000 pages long because I will be demotivated to finish it on the 3rd page.

Very hard to chose a favorite, because a lot of what I read are a part of a series of books (one big long story told over several books). I haven't read very many stand alone novels. As for reccomending one to you, that would depend on your taste... A lot of mine are scifi and military (usually a combination of both), urban fantasy (Think Harry Potter but more kick-ass), and detective/mystery (usually combined with scifi, military, vampires, or some other combination...). I even have some alternate history stuff thrown in there.

So how about I suggest a couple of books?

Scifi/Military: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Scifi/Military: March Upcountry by David Weber (first book of the Empire of Man series)
Military/Detective: Killing Floor by Lee Child (this is Jack Reacher book 1. The Reacher novels are fairly stand alone).
Scifi: Contact by Carl Sagan (100x better than the movie)
Urban Fantasy/Detective: Storm Front by Jim Butcher (Harry Dresden book 1)*
Urban Fantasy/Detective: The Tomb by F. Paul Wilson (Repairman Jack book 1)*
Scifi/Fantasy: Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card
Alternate History: Pastwatch: The Redemption Of Christopher Columbus by Orson Scott Card
Mystery/Detective: The Cabinet of Curiosities by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child**

*I split two ways for the Urban Fantasy series' because both are very good, and very different. Both series' are episodic, so if you like book 1 for both, keep on reading (they only get better as the stories progress). For the Dresden series, I suggest getting the first Omnibus if you can (It's called Wizard For Hire). It has the first 3 books in it (as they're fairly short): Storm Front, Fool Moon and Grave Peril. The first Repairman Jack book (The Tomb) was first published in 1984. You will want to get either the most current edition.
** This is the 3rd Agent Pendergast novel, but the first where he is the protagonist. He is a supporting character in the first two novels: Relic and Reliquary. If you like Cabinet of Curiosities, I suggest going back and reading Relic and Reliquary, then moving on to Pendergast book 4: Still Life With Crows.

If you like any of the stuff I've posted, chances are you'll enjoy the other stuff by the same authors.

If I were to recommend any book, it would be Dale Carnegie's "How To Win Friends And Influence People". There are many examples on how to get what you want from people without having to ask.

Review:
How to Win Friends and Influence People had a tremendous positive impact on my life when I was younger. I was filled with a lot of social anxiety and was extremely uncomfortable interacting with people outside of my immediate social circle – and sometimes even uncomfortable interacting within that circle. Over a period of about a year, I used the ideas in this book to become substantially more outgoing, even to the point of being able to speak in front of a room of people and effectively carry on positive conversations with potential colleagues. I can’t even possibly guess how useful the content of this book has been to me over the last five years.

anyway, if you're going to suggest that book i have to counter-suggest "how to lose friends and alienate people"

i haven't read it and i won't, if you need to ask, smash face against keyboard until you figure it out, vigorously.

The movie Midnight in Paris is about a modern-day novelist that goes back in time and meets many of the authors and artists of the classics. Written and directed by Woody Allen. Interesting for bookworms, but it does have chick-flick moments.

Another of those update things:

091.....Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein

095.....Torin Kerr, Book 04: Valor's Trial by Tanya Huff
096.....Torin Kerr, Book 05: The Truth Of Valor by Tanya Huff
097.....John Rain, Book 03: Rain Storm by Barry Eisler
098.....Blood, Book 01: Blood Price by Tanya Huff
099.....Mistborn, Book 01: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
100.....Mistborn, Book 02: The Well Of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
101.....Mistborn, Book 03: The Hero Of Ages by Brandon Sanderson
102.....The Magicians, Book 02: The Magician King by Lev Grossman
103.....The Android's Dream by John Scalzi

Cannot wait for the "Alloy of Law" novel(la) by Sanderson. Loved the hell out of the Mistborn series, and the upcoming book takes place 300 years after the end of The Hero of Ages. Starship Troopers was disappointing. I wanted a space marine pew pew pew novel, but got a book on philosophy instead. I need to find more space marine pew pew pew novels of the same caliber of Torin Kerr, Honor Harrington and Old Man's War. The opening chapter for The Android's Dream has to have been the funniest shit I've ever read.

The first season of True Blood follows the book fairly well, the 2nd season, not quite. Dunno about seasons 3 or 4.

If you read any, I'd suggest P. N. Elrod's Vampire Files series. It follows a Private Investigator, Jack Flemming, in 1930's mobster ruled Chicago. Flemming is also a vampire. His first case is solving his own murder.

You can get the first three novels, Bloodlist, Lifeblood, and Bloodcircle as an omnibus here. Or, you know... I can... email you... a 3 MB attachment...

Do you like "The Stackhouse Diaries?" I just wondered if they are well written. I did like Anne Rice's Interview With A Vampire. I did not read all of her Vampire Chronicles.....

They're not bad, but I prefer Elrod's series better, but mainly because they're well done mysteries that just happen to have a vampire in it.

So I'm past my record of 122 books read in 2010.

120 Cotton Malone, Book 01: The Templar Legacy by Steve Berry
121
Cotton Malone, Book 02: The Alexandria Link by Steve Berry
122
Kitty, Book 05: Kitty And The Dead Man's Hand by Carrie Vaughn
123
Kitty, Book 06: Kitty Raises Hell by Carrie Vaughn
124
Kitty, Book 07: Kitty's House Of Horrors by Carrie Vaughn
125
Kitty, Book 08: Kitty Goes To War by Carrie Vaughn
126
Kitty, Book 09: Kitty's Big Trouble by Carrie Vaughn

Caught up with the latest Kitty Norville novel, which makes me sad because it's fun as hell. But I look forward to getting back to the Cotton Malone series. It's Dan Brown like stories, with a main character similar to Harry Bosch (Ex-Vietnam Army tunnel-rat working as a police homicide detective in Hollywood).

I'm just gonna say it here, and recommend anything by Larry Correia. Not a lot of books under his belt yet, but every damn one so far has been hugely fun and full of action. And guns. Lots of guns. And at one point, armored zombie bears.
Another update. Haven't read as much in the last couple weeks. Been sick, and haven't felt like reading. Mostly catching up on Bones (holy crap @ Booth knocking up Bones) and listening to podcasts at work. Feeling better, though. List is corrected, I skipped number 134 (typo, no actual book skipped).

145.....Dead Six, Book 01: Dead Six by Larry Correia
146.....Grimnoir, Book 02: Spellbound by Larry Correia
147.....Jack Reacher, Book 16: The Affair by Lee Child
148.....Halo: Glasslands by Karen Traviss
149.....The Gray Man, Book 3: Ballistic by Mark Greaney
150.....Harry Bosch, Book 03: The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connelly
151.....Harry Bosch, Book 04: The Last Coyote by Michael Connelly
152.....In Death, Book 01: Naked In Death by Nora Roberts
153.....Mistborn, Book 04: The Alloy Of Law by Brandon Sanderson
154.....11/22/63 by Stephen King

155.....Skullduggery, Book 03: The Faceless Ones by Derek Landy

The Stephen King book was great, though I found Under The Dome to be better, but it is a different genera. 11/22/63 is mostly watching a guy live his day to day life 50 years in the past, waiting to kill Lee Harvey Oswald, and while it's interesting, I found the situation in Under The Dome to be far more fascinating. I enjoyed the tie-ins with IT (which I need to read, because it's my favorite King movie) in both books. Seriously hoping King does a book that deals more with IT and the mythos surrounding it and the Turtle (which go all the way down, I assume).

Not much of an update, but I'll top 160 by year end.

156.....IT by Stephen King
157
.....Takeshi Kovacs, Book 02: Broken Angels by Richard Morgan
158.....Zero Day by David Baldacci

I see more Stephen King in my future. And I'm hoping King will do something for 2012.... 1958. 1985. 2012. Pennywise Lives. Hint hint, Mr. King.

I'm going to try to finish the Takeshi Kovacs series (only 3 books long) and the Skullduggery Pleasant series (6 books so far) by year end.

His (S. King's) books are addicting, but they're everywhere and inexpensive, so you can enjoy a lot for not much money.

Don't forget to live before you die.
