New Phone

I bought the HTC Evo Sunday afternoon. So far I really like it. It's way better than the Instinct I have. Battery life kind of sucks but I'm used to crappy battery life. Still getting used to it and looking for apps.

ouch, you wound up with an HTC?

then again, i just looked at the detail specs and that's actually almost decent, you got 2 megapixels more on the camera but i don't think it's looking good otherwise.

i guess it is more of a personal preference but most cell phone manufacturers you get the idea that you're holding onto a glorified internet-ified baby pacifier before too long, motorola ones have never done me wrong so far though.

i can see how HTC phones are tempting, i used to have one actually, it was based off the HTC tytn, while i loved the features and generally thought software and (computerish) parts wise it was pretty good the case and general feel of it as well as the way the slider came out saw me sending it back for something else, if only it didn't have that fucking slider that made it feel about as flimsy as a house of cards and a bit less plastic never hurts either, oddly enough it even did sound like it had some sort of little bead loose inside of it, but that's the way it showed up so i assumed it was some kind of accelerometer or tilt sensor, i guess it could have been a rattle too...

weren't you supposed to be buying a bike anyway?

Phone is cheaper than a bike. I'm just happy this thing isn't the instinct despite battery life. It's a lot more fun to use.

i was just teasin you, you kinda already said you're not in the market anymore anyway.
as far as the cell phone battery thing goes....

well... sad to say it, but with any nice phone even a faux-nice iphone the amount of hours you get on a charge has been on a pretty rapid falling off a cliff type motion since.... 90s? phones were like 80% battery if they weren't plugged to the wall then.

it's been working it's way towards a post in small niggling annoyances, for fuck's sake we have cell phones so advanced about all that's left is for the damn things to just read your mind and at that point, what's the point in not just sewing it to your ear, but i'm getting off topic and rambling point being however:
our phones are smart enough, yet are batteries are still banging rocks together to try to make fire, get with the damned program!

take the iphone for example, it gets about 8 hours (yeah right, apples word not mine) of "talk time" which is as close to "screen on" time as apple gets, i used to have an iphone 3g it got no more than 3 hours of battery life with the screen on, yes i tested it, it's official the screen of most phones drains more battery than nearly every single other part of the phone.

Move that slider further to the right and save half your battery.

no thanks, i prefer to be able to see the screen when i'm not indoors.

[edit] i'm going to assume you intentionally missed the point there too which was:
"how hard is it to make batteries that don't die so quick anyway?"[/edit]

[edit2] (just in case) to avoid further confusion i'll explain my frustrations that i was getting at a third time and in two sentences, ready?

"it's just frustrating that we have better cell phones every time you blink to the point batteries would be something really FUCKING good for people to figure out how to make better and do some research on so you can actually be "mobile" with a mobile phone instead of chained to a wall socket because you can watch the battery charge drop as you use it almost"

[/edit2]

I don't understand why people keeping having battery issues with thier smartphones, I have the screen on mine set to 100%, use it for a few hours each day and I get at least 4 days usage between charges, all I did was turn the GPS off

well.... my droid x typically goes just barely over a full day without needing to be charged, the fucking screen on it is dim enough in the sunlit even at a 100% too, but yeah it'd be nice even if only to charge a phone every two, or even three days would be an awesome improvement.

i'd be willing to bet it's the background applications stuff and things that you assume closed when you close them that uses up a bit of the memory, honestly i'm not sure it'd compare to the screen even still though depending on the type of phone.

iphone 3g, jailbroken + iphone 4 firmware features enabled = (minus) -1% battery per minute while the screen was on, no exaggerating at all.

I think iPhone is a little overrated. Awesome phone with good features and solid UI. I just wouldn't get one. AT&T is more expensive than Sprint for the same plan(Sprint has unlimited internet. AT&T doesn't).

The battery lifetime depends on what you demand of it. So instead of expecting more than it can, you can also accept that your battery is what it is and deal with it - in this case by lowering the performance.

By the way, you should check how batteries have improved the past 5 years. You'd be amazed rather than disappointed. Sure, your Nokia 3310 battery lasted for over a week. But you only used it to call and text. Today's 'phones' are more like a small computer.

i'll stick to my HTC wildfire

depending on how you use it , it sure takes a lot of power.
my previous nokia needed power once a week, this one needs it every other day.
But the gps works perfect and it's great with roadmaps and internet

??? I think they are supposed to be interchangeable.

I don't have an Android phone, but I do have an Android based Logitech revue box. I have used ffmpeg, avidemux and mencoder to make videos for it. The vids will also play on an iphone/pad. I have had a couple videos not work on the Android box. Not ones I have made. Could be funky resolutions? Weird frame rates? I really don't know.

The "iphone" preset in avidemux seems to make compatible videos.... streamed.....

The manual for this Logitech device says that playing mp4's from file shares or USB drives is not supported. That doesn't work. It's not the 264 that is the fail, it's the wrapper. You need to use an MKV wrapper, not MP4.... I have not tried this. Divx AVI files using the MPEG-4 codec seem to play fine from file shares and USB drive. You should be able to use ffmpeg or avidemux to convert mp4's to mkv without re-encoding. I have not tried this. This only matters if you are trying to play from the local filesystem or flash. Android will accept AAC/AVC/MP4 podcasts.

You could try it. Load one of your MP4(M4V) files into avidemux. Leave audio and video as "copy". Select MKV as the "format". Save it out as "bla.mkv". This will only take a couple seconds because you aren't re-encoding. Put that on your flash card. It should play. At least my manual says it should. The difference between m4v and mkv is just a little, so I think you should get a good conversion. Test it with VLC, which will play either to make sure.

I am using some program called Handbrake. It seems to work well with the iPhone/iPod Touch preset. Takes a really long time to convert stuff but it works. YouTube and iTunes videos don't need to be converted. Kind of wish the video support was better.

I got a Trojan with my last copy of handbrake. You would be better off using mencoder. Handbrake is ffmpeg based. Avidemux is a better choice. It's mencoder based. Mencoder > ffmpeg. Handily.

there was another one sort of similar to google goggles that i had for a bit that overlaid wikipedia.org entries and stuff like that over what was on your screen, like a video compass, was kinda cool but didn't get to use it much and it seemed a bit over sensitive, oh, you might like the great land grab, i play that game quite a bit on my droid x.

AT&T sent me a new phone since the company is pretty much taking over Alltel here. I'm currently using a little Motorola "razr" phone from Alltel, which has given me pretty good reception and battery life (my biggest needs in a phone).

This new flip phone from Nokia is smaller in 2 dimensions but about a millimeter thicker. Despite being a pretty-much entry-level phone, it still has about a billion more features than I'll ever use. I just hope reception and battery life are as good as the old phone. Renee and I only use one cell phone total, and only put on about a half-hour total minutes per month. It's more of a safety thing; we use work and home phones for almost all our calling.

not quite sure, can't say i looked, our selection is slightly worse than apple, we do have a pretty decent market selection though, seems like stuff never goes on sale for free though with android, might be me.

i've yet to pay for any android or iOS app and that's assuredly the way it'll stay forever so it's not like i have a huge library of games.

I just bought myself a new droid phone last week, and I must agree that battery life is really short, especially when you play games on it but that's understandable of course...

I always carry USB cable with me and if i run low on battery, i can just plug it in a laptop or regular PC. Those are around me alot

HTC is a great phone. As for the battery life, that's an issue that all phones deal with. I have a Samsung Galaxy S, Captivate and I suffer with short battery life all the time. It is frustrating.

I carry around all the back up I can get by using a car charger & a spare battery always helps. I am only my phone nearly 24/7 and I am always on the move. It always helps to have more than one way to keep my battery alive.

hey my brother has HTC Evo, I saw the pictures taken by his phone it were not so much effective, I think if you are going to buy smart phone you must have to check its all features. why do compromise with our money. I am going to buy new android phone launch by samsung in next month, Samsung Galaxy S2 - with 1Ghz of RAM and 16GB of internal storage capacity, high quality 8 mega pixel accompanied by an LED flash to make shots in poor lighting much more effective. Video footage is also great, with the S2 being one of only a handful of models able to capture 1080P, the highest resolution HD footage possible.
