Considering a Ford Transit can do it in 10:13 seconds, its not that inpressive, though the idea of an american car surviving Nuremburgs 130 odd corners is... ..only the second US car I'ed heard of thats gone on it.

Fuckin' Vie.
How does 7:42 compare to 10:13?
I could moped it at 24:52. What comparison does that warrant? Damn, you're a negative character of late.

3 minutes too slow for the current holder topped by a Porsche Carrera GT...With cars, every second is an eternity...Who are you trying to joke with anyway? Would you rather compare the durability efficiency of a lawn mower engine to an F/A-18 jet engine?

Besides, are you afraid Americans are building cars that can keep up with those God-like European supercars? Although I'm an international car enthusiast, I find it impressive the Corvette can tail behind a Carrera GT and beat an SLR, since those two cars are like bionically-engineered cyborgs in the world of supercar technology; And the Corvette Z06 rides on leaf springs and was run on treaded street tires...

Alot of American cars also run the Nurburgring too...I just can't find any list of lap records or anything of the such...Just about any car company that has a performance car, regardless of nationality origin, has tested on the Nurburgring for test tuning...

I read this article last night in my issue of MT, too. I must say it's quite impressive. I don't care what anyone thinks, the new Vette kicks ass.

Chev, I'm pointing out that a Desile VAN can do Nuremburg in 10:13, its prity much a given that a sports car will be in amoungst the other sports cars, so its not realy a suprising result.

Put the engine from the corvette in the van, and it would probably do it in 8:56, though I'ed not want to drive it. What dose getting around a race track 3 minutes faster than a van matter in the real world?

Viper, wow it beet the SLR! so? the SLR is a grand tourer not a sports car in the traditional scence, its designed for endurance and driver comfort not the sprint (Rather Ironic that at its top speed it drinks the petrol tank in 12 minuites thoug.)

Afraid of US cars? How could you be afraid of US cars, there inconpatible with the UK and EU markets. They wont sell more than a Hundred of those corvettes to the EU, but Vauxhall will sell thousands of its Morano wich uses the engine from a Corvette (I think the older Model though) with slightly less primative equipment (Desgined in Austrailia by Holden).

I'm sure a lot of US cars run the ring, but how meny have the cahones to put up there times? All prase to Corvette for getting round quick, but lets be honest, how meny people who buy one are ever gonna go around the ring in it? And how meny people who bought a 911 are gonna go around it?

It's a judge of performance, not a track everyone has to go to.
By the way, my bos took me for a ride in his buddy's '05 C6 Vette Saturday.

And the gas mileage:
22.6 mpg?!? out of a 400 horse small block!

Damn cockpit is made for a midget though

If its a judge of performance you want take it on the Paris Dacar.

mmm, broken Suspentions.

I can just imagine what would be left of the Ferraris after 10 mins, but Lambo would probably do it if they took that bloody great hummeresk thing of theres...

I'm not sure about the length of the track the vette was timed over though (there's no average speed mentioned), so comparing times may not be an exact measure of it's performance.

Still, i do find it somewhat difficult to believe that a (pre) production model vette with no aero add-on's could beat some of those cars (not just lambos and ferraris, those modified 600+hp porsches would be near impossible for any standard road car to beat).

Not many people, but it shows what kind of performance potential the car has, the Nurburgring just being the Top Teir for bragging rights...

Have you ever driven one?

Ask the people who have, its a Grand Tourer.

Sure its built up to the standards of a supercar, but it drives as a Grand Tourer.

While I love Grand Nationals as much as the next car guy, I'd take a Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG over any car yet mentioned in this thread, in a heartbeat.

Well, my '95 S10 SS is the closest thing to a Syclone I could get. Only differences are that mine has a newer body style and lacks the 4WD system and turbocharger. Underneath, it's the exact same truck.

if its got an automatic, that in itself is enough to disqualify any car from being a true sports car. A very sporty, and very fast GT? Yes. Supercar to be mentioned in the same breath as the McLaren F1, the Enzo Ferrari, Porsche carrera GT? No.

What about the Enzo's paddle-shift F1 transmission? Shifts are done manually, but there's no clutch for the driver to operate...How do you classify that?

I've been feeling anal all morning...

a sequentially shifted manual transmission, the transmission is totally incapable of shifiting without input from the driver, the Enzo has no automatic mode.

Grand Tourer my ass!

McLaren does not Grand Tour shit.

Quote:
The audio soundtrack wasn’t bad, either, with a muted but shrill scream of a twin-screw Lysholm blower accompanying a distinctly staccato roar from the 617-hp V-8’s side pipes every time the driver stabbed the pedal.
I'd have that bastard screaming over the audio!

And to shift gears into the transmission debate:
Quote:
Mercedes’ strongest five-speed automatic (with manual override) still required internal reinforcements to handle the enormous horsepower of the SLR. It offers three levels of transmission performance—comfort, sport, and manual. In manual mode, the box shifts only in response to the wheel-mounted buttons or a side swipe at the selector, and it has an additional three levels of response and shift speeds set by yet another rotary knob.
And the final figure that transmits that the SLR is an exotic:

Estimated base price: $400,000

The SLR McLaren is fast, I'll give it that, but in my opinion it's ugly as sin. The S65 AMG has just 13 less horsepower, and nearly 200 more lb/ft of torque than the SLR. And it's half the price. And it looks better to boot. S65 please.
