RMO & Targetspot Monetization FAQs

SHOUTcast RMO = SHOUTcast Radio Manager Online

This is where you create a profile and add new SHOUTcast stations.

Note how there are two different options when adding stations...

1. What is the difference between SHOUTcast Streaming Service (SCSS) and SHOUTcast DNAS?

SCSS = Hosted by shoutcast.com
With SCSS, you generate the stream on your computer and send it to our SCSS server.
Listeners then tune-in to your stream on our server.
The SHOUTcast DNAS server is not used or required for SCSS stations.

DNAS = SHOUTcast Distributed Network Audio Server.
Broadcasters use this to either host the station themselves,
or 3rd-party SHOUTcast Hosting Providers use it to host the station for you.
The self-hosted solution isn't ideally recommended for newcomers...

Make sure you select the correct station type when registering!

2. What is an authhash? Why do I need one?

AuthHash = Authorization Hash
Note: Although it's a commonly used typo, there's no such thing as an "autohash".

You need to register SHOUTcast DNAS v2 streams in the RMO to get an authhash.
You then enter the authhash into the DNAS admin or config file (sc_serv.conf)
which will then allow the stream to be listed in the SHOUTcast YP Directory.

3. I'm upgrading from SHOUTcast v1. What do I put in the AuthHash field on the registration form in the RMO?

SHOUTcast v1 didn't use the AuthHash system, so you should leave the field blank and let the system generate a new authhash for you.

You would only put an existing AuthHash in this field if you are upgrading from an older version of SHOUTcast v2.

4. What bitrates are supported for monetization?

MP3: 32, 64, 128, 192, 256, 320 kbps
AAC: 32, 48, 64, 96, 128 kbps

5. How can I change my main genre?

Go to the Settings => Information tab in the RMO

Here you can remove and add genres and can also rearrange the order by dragging the genres into place.
Whatever genre is first in the list (leftmost) will be the main genre that the station is listed under in the SHOUTcast Directory.

Note that the genres in the RMO are actually the Radionomy genres, and not the SHOUTcast genres.
The RMO genres are mapped to the same or closest possible matching Shoutcast equivalent.

If you require your station to be listed under a specific Shoutcast genre that can't be achieved via the selection process in the RMO, then do not hesitate to contact us (via the contact form or provided email address) with your request.

6. I get an error message when trying to create/add my station. What should I do?

Make sure all fields are completed properly.
Make sure the station logo isn't too large (we recommend going no larger than 400x400px)

Check that there's no empty fields in your Profile

Note: You should definitely provide accurate info if you ever wish to be paid for generating revenue via our monetization program.

If the error message relates to the station name not being available, then contact us via the provided support email address.
The most common cause of this problem (and one which can easily be resolved by our Support Team) is if you ever registered the station name under Radionomy, as both Radionomy & SHOUTcast share the same databases...

Another potential cause is if the station has already been submitted to the Radionomy database as an external station.
You can confirm this by searching for the same station name on radionomy.com.
If this is the case, and you are the proven station owner of that same station, then we can convert the database item into a DNAS station to be associated with your RMO account instead

If the error message doesn't specify the reason or provide an email address, you can use the Contact Form

Make sure you include the following in ALL correspondence:

- Your RMO Account Email Address
- The exact name of your station
- The Stream URL of your station, if one already exists
- Details of the error/problem

If the problem relates to a station you've already added to the RMO, but you're having issues with it that you can't resolve yourself, such as: You cant change the name / genre(s) / website in the authhash or YP, or your station isn't listed in the YP, or anything else - then contact Support and explain the problem clearly.

Do NOT delete/disable your station or account.
Most issues can easily be resolved by our Support Team.

FAQ about monetization

1) What does « impression » mean ?
Impression, sometimes called a view or an ad view, is a term that refers to the point in which an ad is viewed once by a visitor, or displayed/heard once on a web page/radio. The number of impressions of an advertisement is determined by the number of times the page/spot is located and heard.

2) What does « Allocation » mean ?
In the media, advertising, and marketing industries, advertising inventory or allocations is the space available to advertisers on newspapers, magazines, and digital platforms.
For instance, if you trigger a 2min file, there is a potential of four 30 seconds ad spots, the inventory or allocations = 4, however we might only have 3 ads available to fill the ad-break, consequently impressions=3 and filled rate = 75%

3) What does Filled Rate mean?
Impressions / allocations x 100

4) Payment method ?
We only pay by PayPal. You need to update your financial information in SHOUTcast radio manager, under settings / Billing Addresses. If you don't have a SHOUTcast account, please register by clicking here. Choose "Register", then "SHOUTcast DNAS" (the green box) and follow the steps.

5) Can I track payments in RMO?
Not yet, we are working on integrating a full payment history in RMO for upcoming release this year. But you can track an estimate of revenue generated month to date and previous month.

6) Why is there an estimated revenue?
Exact impressions are confirmed by the advertiser 60 days after campaign so the final amount might slightly change.

7) When do you get paid?
Payment will be processed by PayPal only, every month, 60 days in arrears, i.e. July’s revenue will be paid end of September, August’s end of October and so on.

9) Can I track my estimated revenue by total countries?
No, an ad-campaign can be delivered in the origin country currency and thus can be mixed up with others. To simplify we’ve chosen to work only with Euros and Dollars. This might evolve in the future.

10) Is a minimum payment required to get paid?
Yes, you need to collect a minimum of 25 $/€ to receive your payment directly on your paypal account, if you don't reach the threshold, it will be automatically reported to the following month.

11) In which countries are we monetizing?
On the revenue page, you can see the list. However, note we’re working on integrating all Latin American including Brazil, later this year.

12) What is my revenue share?
- SHOUTcast Streaming Service = 40% of TargetSpot Net revenue, in the RMO we display a net CPM.
- DNAS: 50% of TargetSpot Net revenue, in the RMO we display a net CPM.

13) In which currency am I getting paid?
For now, we’re only working in Euros and US dollars. We’ll pay in these two currencies, European audience in euros, North and Latin America in US dollars. This might change in future. However, you’ll receive money in your local currency on Paypal.

14) Is Paypal applying a fee on receiving money?
A currency conversion fee may apply. Please refer to PayPal conditions for more information.
The fees applied by PayPal are charged to the broadcaster.

15) Is ad-insertion automatic on your stream?
No, it’s not. You need to trigger files to run ads on your stream. Here is a tutorial to help you through the process:

16) Can I trigger more than 2 ad-breaks / hour?
Yes, up to 5 breaks of 2 minutes each

17) Can I trigger my 2 ad-breaks per hour back to back?
Yes, however note that some advertisers put a restriction to limit an ad to be played twice in a laps time

18) Is pre-roll included in stats impression?
Yes, you also get revenue from it based on same revenue share than mid-roll.

19) Can I be part of monetization program if I’m located outside a monetized country?
Yes, as long as you have audience in monetized countries, you can generate revenue from it and get paid, no matter where you’re originally broadcasting.
