security aspects: WA 5.05 and Restricted User in Win XP Pro
Hi Developer Team
I've just installed Winamp 5.05 as Admin on my Win XP Pro SP2 "box". Then I've looged off and logged on as user. While starting Winamp it wants to write data to C:\program files\winamp but this is prohibited since windows 2000 and NTFS. (as result the media library does not work) Please see the "Designed for Microsoft Windows XP" Application Specification 2.3" on http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=9775 for details. user specific data should be placed in C:\documents and settings\%username%\application data\appname or C:\documents and settings\All Users\application data\appname if a user needs write access to a file. anything in c:\program files is read only. the second aspect of a possible security hole concerns the proxy settings dialog. it would be much better if you redesign the GUI in order to hide the password from the user's eyes ![]() thank you very much Peter PS: Source of "Designed for Microsoft Windows XP" Application Specification 2.3" Guide: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=9775 |

This is nothing new.
Winamp 5.x is the continuation of Winamp 2.x which was designed for Win9x seven years ago. Adding multi-user support is a feature request, not a bug. Tech Support forum > Sticky: Troubleshooters...
