My Preset Pack, l33t viz vol. i (wherein, I steal a bunch of great code)

Hello,

This collection of presets for milkdrop 2 beta represents countless hours of time intoxicated on various substances, amphetamines being my favorite. I was creating (or remixing, whatever you prefer) these files up until the time I went into a rehabilitation treatment center for chemical dependency, namely prescription amphetamines, methamphetamines, marijuana and alcohol. I didn't credit anyone with the code they created. I often wonder how many preset authors are now not with us today. Sometime ago, I realized that for those minutes and hours and days I spent near overdose tripping on milkdrop would be for nothing if I didn't share them. Maybe I should have deleted them. I have been off drugs for 9 months now. I wish I could say I am happy now. I'm not loaded and crying in my room as I watch the sun rise for the second, third, or fourth time, unable to participate in society, but the scars of my addiction run deep. Addiction took me from a happy twelve year-old to a damaged and slowly recovering twenty-six year-old. I am slowly rebuilding relationships with my family. I found out after treatment that I have a son. I get to see him occasionally, and it hurts, but it's for the best for now. I can barely listen to the same music without being triggered to use. Maybe someday I will be happy, for now I just don't get high, every day, no matter what. Even though I really want to. I hope I included everything you need to enjoy my presets.

Heh, your pack was motivation enough for me to finally write a little program, that automatically changes the header lines from

MILKDROP_PRESET_VERSION=201
PSVERSION=4
PSVERSION_WARP=4
PSVERSION_COMP=4

To

MILKDROP_PRESET_VERSION=201
PSVERSION=3
PSVERSION_WARP=3
PSVERSION_COMP=3

for all preset files in a directory
For single files I did change these lines manually before, otherwise the presets won't display on ATI graphics cards. But I've got them all working for me now.

A huge pack with great remixes! I like! I have looked into some presets and found new shader code fragments - did you program some on your own or are those all pure mashups?

I'm not sorry to hear your story, but i hope for you that it was your last episode of that kind. It would be too easy to blame it on the drugs. As for me i like to smoke marijuana and watch MD too - unable to produce anything good then. I can watch a single preset for hours and it is like a meditation or self-hypnosis thing. I mean after even more hours of creating it beforehand. My mom is suffering from depressions and i can relate to that state of mind too. At the moment she's in the mental hospital again and after several weeks the doctors still try find the proper medication. This is taxing for all involved...
I am as old as you and i can relate to almost 10 years of not only responsible drug use, though i can't say that i was ever really addicted. Anyway almost for the cost of my degree at the university.

Here ya go!
This is the source and the executable for the 4 -> 3 editor.

Changing a preset's shader version to 2 wouldn't make much sense because it will not run then most likely. And be sure to have a backup before editing the files!

First of all, lol @ myself.
My initial post (and preset pack readme) was so full of hurt and self-pity... Reads like a depressed 13-year-old wrote it! I think I am going to change that a little bit! I am amazed milkdrop is still the standard for trippy home music viz, I would have thought something else would have taken over by now. Magnetosphere totally doesn't compare. Where is milkdrop3d already?!? I didn't even know if my presets would work without the beta dll...
I am so glad someone is looking at them besides me! I always knew milkdrop was something special... I'm not surprised the creator went on to something so huge.
Flexi: Yes, I messed around with some fragments of my own, but I really don't have the math chops to really know how and why everything is working. I always wanted to pursue this avenue of art/technology. Remixing is always something I've enjoyed, but I've always wanted to write my own from scratch, and never gotten up the courage to do it. Are you still creating presets? Is your career related to technology or music or both?

LuxXx, I first off want to thank you for this amazing Preset pack. Though some were too bright, or too flashy to look at, most of them were epic. I loved them a ton, and, though you have bad experiences in your life, it is obvious you love to make these. It was your presets that got me really rolling in preset making. So, in your honor, I dedicate these presets to you. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do, and I pray for your safety and wellbeing.

When it comes to milkdrop, I guess I am kind of a whore. But a classy one! Your presets are great, and your effort is very much appreciated. Thank you very much for sharing these. These have certainly earned a spot in my regular rotation.

I think we should probably not use the words "whore" and "slut" in regards to things we like. But I talked like this once and I appreciate that you find value in something.

Switching from "volume" to "version" and 133t viz v2 will be "released" later this year.

I'm don't know this BASF, but now as an artist I rip and tear and copy and paste and remix and repent and I don't care if anyone likes it anymore. Or how I did it. I'm still defining my process (I do mostly static visual art that exists out in the world, not in the screen world) but I worry less about copying these days and more about making things that fool people and things whose origins and constructions are not immediately apparent.

Actually, since I posted vol.1, I've lost everything and built it up again several times, including families and friends. Now things seem crazier than ever but at least I can work in peace. I don't have any happy way to end this. I don't know why anything is the way it is, and why I can't be like everyone else. In fact for the most part, I don't ask the question anymore. I hope some people get something out of my work I guess. A few laughs, a cheap thrill, a little-death, a psychic breakthrough, ego death

This is a updated URL for volume i. Now I wish I had included some way to track activity (dropbox only gives detailed metrics if you are on their "pro" plan, the bloodsuckers). I am giving up "volumes" and moving to "versions" so the new pack will replace all of my old presets. I guess I'll have to include a script or app to remove all my old ones if I'm changing organizational system. It's at about 1600 presets right now, and almost all the old ones have been improved. Maybe I will just remove any that have not changed in that time, so it'll be like a remix album. l33t viz v2 - coming in Q3 or Q4 2021.
