Yes! But it's expensive! I'll probably wait like I did with the PS2...

I've decided after 10 years PS use, I'm not going PS3 shaped, my PS was quite frankly rubbish, in fact it's hardly been used at all for the last 2/3 years, even then it was only to play GTA VC / SA

Not sure what direction to go next gen console, maybe Wii if nintendo can win over with something or other...

It seems as though that $100 will buy more then just 40GB of HD space.

I want to get all of the nextgen consoles, however the Wii is lowest on my list, as party games and such aren't my favorite genre. Needs more job.

However, Harrison did go on to suggest that consumers will have a variety of options to choose from in the longer term.

"There have been various versions and variants of PlayStations in the past - some run through the hardware and some through the software, and that's worked pretty well for us, offering different value propositions to the consumer."

"Exactly what we do with the launch? Too early to tell."

Harrison said in this article that it was his personal opinion that offering two versions was unlikely, and besides he never claimed that they never would he just felt it was unlikely. He him self even suggests diversity in the product line during the consoles life cycle.

And you though the xbox was a lethiathan .

"The console will weigh in at a solid eleven pounds. In comparison, the relatively chunky Xbox weighs 8.5 pounds, and the Xbox 360 weighs 7.7 pounds. The PS3 measures 12.8"(W) x 3.8"(H) x 10.8"(L), which is in line with the other consoles."

Seriously, outside of Sony diehards, who is going to pay $500 for this? I mean, I realize that few other than the fanbois rush out to grab one early, but given the loss Sony is taking on each of these (still at least a couple hundred per unit), how long do you think they'll hold out on slashing the price? I'm betting a long-ass time and I'm thinking Sony is doing a lot more harm to itself than it needs to. They certainly are not condemning themselves to death, but they will certainly make the next-gen race a lot closer, especially if Nintendo undercuts everybody at $250 (which they almost certainly will) and if Microsoft drops to that point by November on the basic 360 package (which would be a good idea since they're taking a loss anyway).

The PS3 was just released in japan and one may wonder what would be the first thing a japan native would do with their 70,000 Yen console... well you can see the ps3 being literally dissected here. Unfortunately it is in Japaneses but there are plenty of interesting pictures of the disassembling process. For example from the pictures it looks like Sony soddered a PS2 on to the mobo in order to maintain backward compatibility with the previous gen. Heres your chance to see the monster from the inside.

Rough translation of the caption for that image from the website:
Quote:
Four big chips are visible on the motherboard. This one, on the leftmost side of the mobo, is labeled EE+GS. It is thought that it is for the operation of PS2 software.

A Local bestbuy recently set up a PS3 kiosk running a motorstorm demo. Unfortunately, the most notable thing I can say about this new black behemoth is that the one time I played the console it froze on me, it other two times I was at bestbuy the console was either frozen or froze while someone else was playing. Supposedly this is due to how the kiosk is set up but I guess time will tell whether that is indeed the case. As for other impressions, the graphics are good but not nearly as awe inspiring as the last gen transition. The new controller is passable, the L2 and R2 now have an analog trigger function which sort of hang out there and do not feel well secured to me. Further I can say already that rumble will be sourly missed. Yet I will as always take the wait and see approach but I am so far underwhelmed with the next..er current gen offerings.

Since the Cell processor uses the IBM's PowerPC instruction set, it seems that the mac flavors of Linux are easily being put onto the PS3.

PS3's selling with Fedora pre-installed

soon to be released specially tailored Linux for PS3

I wonder if there is a way to get OSX on there .

Why the hell does Sony support homebrew software and alternate OSes on the PS3, yet they constantly release patches to prevent the same kind of stuff on the PSP?

This is a sig of some nature.

fedora installed on that ps3 for sale has nothing to do with sony (i think) its just a clever extra for those offering the ps3 online. the ps3 will have constant firmware upgrades to it as well. as i understand it you have to update the firmware already before you can play your first game.

It is in fact a feature offered by sony, for they are trying to pitch the ps3 as a computer . If you watch the video included in the "fedora" link above you will see that "Other OS" is an option included in the default menu. Further if you go to playstation.com, there is a page which gives more detail on this interesting feature, see here . Also people are already loading emulators on to their linux PS3 PC's, see here , and here, thereby stealing some virtual console thunder . So how much would you pay for a PC with the following specs; 3.2Ghz Cell PowerPC CPU, 256MB System Memory, Nvidia ~7800 GPU 256MB Video Memory, 60GB HD, 4 USB 2.0, 5-1 memory card reader, WiFi, Blueray drive? To the general consumer the $600 price point is probably a bit exorbitant but to the tech savy this thing could very well be a steal.

It's about the size of a computer, too... I saw one a couple nights ago when I was at the mall. It looks even bigger in real life than it does in the pictures.

At any rate, it's still a Sony.

It would be nice if it came with a PS2 controller.

The only controller design I have ever thought to be particularly good... every other controller I have used has either been too big (e.g. xbox, n64), or has badly placed hard edges (e.g. nes, game boy) that dig into the hands. The PS2 controller is the only one that I can pick up and play with without discomfort over time. It has the right size and the right button positions for them to all be comfortably reachable, at least for my hands.

I did eventually develop a resistance to the discomfort of some controllers, mostly the game boy original and the SNES pad but whenever I went back to them after having lost my "natural resistance" they felt crappy and uncomfortable once again.

PS2 controller ftw.

I wonder if the wireless in the 599 version tries to install rootkits on any PC in your network.
