Direct Connect

Has anyone seen this yet? I like it better than any of the mainstream P2P clients I've tried so far.

Would anyone be willing to host a DC hub for the forums? SA has their own hub and it works great. I'm sure it wouldn't be much of a problem for someone to set up a hub.

eh, heh.

I don't get it. Just tried it. Too much effort to connect and get anything. Plus all that 'share so much to join hub' crap.

However if someone setup a hub here it might be worth me keeping it. Otherwise uninstall time.

I tried DC a few months ago. It's great for finding stuff you'd never be able to find elsewhere, but it is a bit of a bugger to use if your on a dialup

when was the last time it has been updated? seems like a dead project.
anyways i never liked it, i don't wanna share 10gb on my 16k/sec upload. i like using multisource networks, so i can leave freely knowing they will be picked up on another source.

I'd always thought you introduced me to Direct Connect..
I like Direct Connect, It's good to find unusual files when Morpheus only seems to have the popular stuff. I like the way you browse the users files..god knows why I just do..

I was thinking about this a few days ago, and I thought it would be a good idea for some of us to just go on a pub hub and have our nicknames be "[WA] username" so we could know who was from the forums.

It's not the same as having a hub to ourselves, but if people like it someone might set one up

I'll go looking for a hub that we could rendezvous on right now.

eh, heh.

Ok,

thezoo.dynip.com in DC

I talked to their admin. There's no minimum share and he encourages people from all over the place to come.
I'm "fish" on there.

it seems that it always says that someone doesn't have an open slot, even though in the search window, it says they have one. i've tried the passive mode, but that doesn't work. maybe the router changes didn't take effect, either. i dunno.

Whenever I try to get onto a hub, i always get disconnected immediatly. More specifically, here is what i get:

Quote:

<Client> Disconnected From Hub
<Client> Connecting To oaftp.dyndns.org:411
<Client> Disconnected From Hub
<Client> Connecting To sacerdotibus.dyndns.dk:411
<Client> Disconnected From Hub
<Client> Connecting To thezoo.dynip.com :411

any tips on how to make it work?

What is happening is you are being redirected to different servers because the one you are triing to get into is either a) full or b) only allows registered users in.

-----------------------------------------

I have fooled around with so many different server options. I ended up coming back to this one. Direct connect seems to have everything that I visioned I wanted.

I am working over the next couple of days, but on Monday I will have the server public. It is called the Winamp Forums Place. If you want the ip address so you can connect to it email me at missyob@yahoo.com (I dont want to post it here). I will email you back the ip address and we can start our sharing of our knowledge . My ip is not a static one, so it may change at some time, but it has stayed the same for the past 5 months, so I dont see that being a problem.

I am really excited because there is a built in chat room also. I could kick myself now, I just deleted a ton of stuff from my hard drive (I am only sharing 13 megs now). Oh well, I can always put it all back on!

Later on next week, I will be doing the whole user name and password thing, so it will become a private place, but I just dont have the time right now.

Enjoy your weekend all, stay out of trouble.

Big Hugs,

~ Missy

Oh, is that running on port 411? is that the only port is uses? I may have that port open through my proxy if it is somewhat of a standard port number. Let me go check this out...

Thanks missy, but there is nothing you can do. Unless I find an option in there for a http proxy support, there is no way I can join unless my dad opens up port 411. And if that, I'm not sure I could get it working. It is not just a matter of opening the correct ports. I have to find if it is TCP or UDP, and the direction for traffic. Anyway, I will look at it in a minute, and search for http proxy support.

Ok, I pretty get the same thing as Yossarian.

Quote:
<Client> Direct Connect 1.0 Preview Build 9.1
<Client> You are using Direct Connect in passive mode. Some features will not work, and you will not be able to connect to other users who are in passive mode.
<Client> Connecting To thezoo.dynip.com:411
<Client> Disconnected From Hub
I am running it in passive mode because that will help it run with proxys and firewalls. It is not working though. Oh well, I will see if I can get my dad to open up port 411.

nick, just out of curiosity, what is the point of running a proxy if it's denying you access to virtually everything the internet has to offer? I'm sure you have no data whose protection is worth limiting your internet access in such a way. You may consider talking to your Dad about it, and see if he'll switch to another, less expansive, more open kind of proxy. It just seems to me that the proxy you have in place right now is protecting your computer by disconnecting it from the internet entirely.

this is my dad:

Obviously, you are not a parent. If you were, you would know EXACTLY why everything is locked down. Further, you are not trained in security. The very first rule of security is that you lock down EVERYTHING, and then go back and give access to only what is needed.

[/end my dad]

Basiclly, my dad wants to block certain types of files. It looks like he is doing this by extensive logging and blocking most programs. I wouldn't mind having the proxy server gone or at least switched to a more open, reliable, non-microsoft one, but it seems my dad is bent on using ISA server. Oh well, it seems that there is nothing I can do about that. I will attempt to talk to my dad sometime about getting things to work, but for now, it seems that I am limited to internet, ftp, irc, and Half Life. Do you have any sugestions for better proxy servers? If so, I will look at them and show my dad.

For the mean time, it seems that I will not be able to take part in this direct connect thing.

Ask him to open up direct connect sometime. He's only got to open aa single port.

[edit]Oh, you already know this.[/edit]

I'd recommend Zonealarm for your proxy. Especially if the alternative is a MSoft product.

I wish I could help you explain to your dad that he is being overconcerned, but once people decide they need to lock everything, it's hard to convince them otherwise. I see no reason to have an Internet connection if you insist on blocking everything, though . . .

Bout time you guys/girls found out about Direct Connect. Been usin it for about 4 weeks.

At first it was more of a trouble then pleasure to get things, but after I got used to it, it was easier to get what I wanted and more of what I wanted then on any other p2p thingamaroo.

p.s. Missy, will you be my mommy?

Direct Connect makes an outbound TCP connection on port 411 to connect to a hub. If you only want to use it on the Winamp hub it's easy enough to restrict access to just that address. If you want to connect to other hubs as well you would need to either add the addresses as needed or allow on any address.
It makes both an inbound and an outbound TCP/UDP connection on port 412 to d/l from others and to allow others to d/l from you. These you would need to allow to and from any address or go nuts allowing them on the fly.
It will also attempt to connect to addresses on port 80 which would be related to the ads. I've blocked these with no problem.
Please let me know if you try it and it looks for any other connections as I'd be very interested.
