U.S., Russia agree to new nuclear arms pact

President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sealed a new nuclear arms reduction treaty during a phone call Friday, committing the two nations to a significant new reduction of the strategic missiles each side has deployed, U.S. officials announced.

This will reduce US and Russian stockpiles about a third, but there is some concern that monitoring is insufficient. I don't think that's a fair basis for criticism, as the point is to show the United States and Russian in cooperation against nuclear proliferation.

In a rare appearance, Hillary even swooped down on her broom to give the okee dokey to the Presidents plan.

We might be firing blanks anyway:

I don't think our nuclear stockpile matters. 1500 ballistic missiles remaining should be enough.

This is what we hired Obama for. This is a diplomatic victory more than a physical one. First, it shows a united front between Russia and US in arms limitation and anti-proliferation.

Second, it might give the Russians enough political wiggle to allow some of the missile defense shield plans for Europe.

Even a stopped watch is right twice a day.

I really don't think either side was effectively weakened at all with this, but at least it looks good.

What I think is pretty stupid or naive is the idea that our reductions in nuclear stockpiles is going to make any difference at all diplomatically. The idea that nuclear weapons reduction is going to make any difference to Al Queda, terrorists groups, or unstable governments seeking nuclear arms is inane.

It's nice to get rid of a few nukes. It's rather like having 1 shotgun at point blank range instead of 10. In the scheme of things, the threat didn't change much.

A victory for domestic sophistry everywhere.
