Missing Albums in Winamp Media library

Ok I did some searching but still did not come across my problem and I'm hoping some one may be able to help.

Here it is.

I have Winamp V5.581 running on HP laptop, XP SP3 system. Program works great. But in my media library "Local Media" sub directory listed as "My Music" it shows in the summary that I have 5703 Albums. I keep all my albums in one folder that is tracked by winamp, that folder is on my music drive, K/My Music All is the folder. It is the only music folder scanned by winamp and where all my music is kept.

The problem is that it the actual directory there is 5752 Albums, non of these are ghosts or empty folders, I am very very meticulous about this drive, all music is downloaded and converted on this drive. I have double check all files and folders on this drive, all of the albums. They are complete, all are mp3 files in all of the album folders.

I'm trying to figure why winamp is not reading the other 49 albums?

I'm not sure which they are, I was going to do an item by item double check against the drive, that will take quite a bit of time.

I was hoping some one may have experienced this. I have cleared the ibrary and had it rebuild, and it still comes up with the 49 album difference.

No Answer, but you aren't alone.

While I don't have an answer. I'd have to guess it has to do with the number of files. (too large/too many)

Anyway, you aren't alone, keep your eye over here:

Maybe someone will hit on it.

Thanks.....

I will keep my eye on your thread too. Well I have been going through them folder by folder, looking at each with MP3Tag, and other things for data. At first I thought it might be singles, not listing as albums. because I have exactly 43 singles saved as individual files with folders and album art. And my count is exactly 43 Folders or albums difference. My Music folder in windows explorer lists 5843 folders and or albums or files, all have their art, and mp3 files. Some are singles, like I said 43 to be exact. Winamp lists 5800 files. So 43 short. I have deleted, cleared the libraries and rescanned, no change. It was not the 43 singles as I thought, because they all show in winamp, including the album data and art. So somewhere in there are 43 mystery files that winamp will not read for some reason.

winamp may NOT be missing any. you may have albums of the same name, like "Greatest Hits"

the first question is does winamp and mp3tag agree as to the number of music files?

something else to look at, is that if the path and filename exceed 255 chars total, winamp/xp will mess up.

Thanks for the ideas to look at.

I have made an effort to keep the files names down, as yes that can complicate things, and the path to the files.

I do have several albums listed as Greatest Hits, but they are also listed by the artist, and the MP3Tag data matches up so far. Same goes for albums listed as "The Essential"

There is something in there some place...

Just have to find it.

the 255 limit = path+filename together.

you can't trust the album count in winamp imo, regardless of artist / albumartist tags.

on the audio tab of winamp, it reports i have 43,546 files (or something like that). if mp3tag reports the same amount of audio files, then you aren't missing anything.

the only count i trust in winamp is the overall total number of audio files.

Well I did a scan for MP3 files, all my files are MP3,

Winamp indicates 84,407 files in my drive / directory

MP3Tag indicates I have 84,407 files in the drive / directory

Windows search indicates that I have 84,394 files on the drive (so it is missing a few).

I cleared the winamp library again, and then went through the drive, I even shortened the path by eliminating the directory they were in and just now have all the music on k:\ (the drive is called my music drive).

Here is the funny part.

Before I had a 43 folder / alnum difference, I wnt through the whole folder, deleted any guplicate albums, plus removed a folder of about 500 singles, and did soem other cleanining and scanning for dead and empty folders.

After that

Winamp indicates I have 5592 albums / folders

Windows indicates I have 5744 albums / folders

Difference of 152 now (LOL).

Still makes no sense, but the tracks do match up.

do "start" "run" and type "cmd" to get the "dos" type terminal window.

navigate your C prompt to get to your music root dir and when there type:

dir *.mp3 *.wav *.flac /s

so for me it would look like:

c:\music\dir *.mp3 *.wav *.flac /s

and windows will give you an accurate file count of files with those extensions in all the sub-folders.

I have the same issue with 5.581 :
albums like "Greatest Hits", "Best of" , "The Singles" are just counted once !

Why not count the albums based on "Artist / Album name" ?

actually, you'd want to use "albumartist/album" not artist, b/c any album could have multiple artists, but should have only one albumartist.

one way they could improve, would be to consider folder location, so winamp would know a greatest hits in one folder is not the same greatest hits in another folder. but what i do is add the artist name to albums like that, so not much of an issue for me, ie. "Greatest Hits (Cheap Trick)"
