Bastet

Goddess of cats, protection, joy, dance, music, and love

Bastet was a goddess in ancient Egyptian religion, worshipped as early as the Second Dynasty (2890 BC). As Bast, she was the goddess of warfare in Lower Egypt, the Nile River delta region, before the unification of the cultures of ancient Egypt. Her name is also spelled Baast, Ubaste, and Baset

Egyptian gods and goddesses closely resembled the appearance of humans, but many of their gods, such as Bastet (Bast) were also perceived as 'human hybrids' depicted with human bodies with the heads of animals. These symbols were used as a recognition aid and a device to visually convey the powers, identity and attributes of the deity.

The Dual Roles of Bastet in Egyptian Mythology

Bastet, the Egyptian goddess of cats, featured in the stories, myths and legends in Egyptian Mythology. She was revered as the kindly goddess of pets and household cats and also as the war-like lion-headed goddess. Bastet (also known as Bast) replaced the ancient cult of Mafdet, the earliest cat goddess of ancient Egypt. In her benign aspect Bastet was worshipped as the kindly life giving god of fire, cats, the home and pregnant women. In her malignant aspect Bastet was worshipped as the hostile war goddess and protector of Egypt. Bastet was therefore known as the giver of blessings to the good and a deliverer of wrath to the evil and could be depicted as cat, lion, lynx or cheetah.

This limestone stela was uncovered at Deir el-Medina, the exclusive village of the workers who dug and decorated the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, c 1200 BC.

This is the sort of worship that cats have come to expect.

Here an unidentified couple are shown adoring the divine cats of Atum and Ra, who combine to become Atum-Ra, the god of the setting sun.
Every night, the sun-disc travelled through the dangerous underworld towards its rebirth at dawn. One of the challenges it faced was Apep, who took the form of a snake to swallow the sun.
Because cats were known to kill snakes, the cat-god Atum-Ra entered the underworld to destroy Apep and clear the path for the sun.
This stela is now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

The Cults of Bastet

The cult of Bastet was known for its orgiastic ceremonies. Up to 700,000 men and women made a pilgrimage to Bubastis every year to honor the goddess Bastet and join in celebrations and grand processions. Herodotus, the ancient Greek historian (c. 484 – 425 BC) wrote:

"... they come to Bubastis (and) they begin the festival with great offerings and sacrifices, during which more wine is consumed than during the whole of the rest of the year".

Aelian (ca. 175 – ca. 235), an ancient Roman historian in writing about Leontopolis said:

"In Egypt, they worship lions, and there is a city called after them. The lions have temples and numerous spaces
in which to roam; the flesh of oxen is supplied to them daily and the lions eat to the accompaniment
of song in the Egyptian language"

Bastet and the Domestic Cat

Domestic cats were kept in households of ancient Egypt and are sometimes pictured in tombs of wealthy nobles. Cats were seen as valued members of the family and played a vital role in attacking any snakes, including cobras, that ventured into the house. Cats also kept the vermin population of Egypt in check, an important role in maintaining the crops stored in the granaries. In the royal palaces of Egypt cats were adorned with jewelled collars and even allowed to eat from the dishes of the pharaoh. The death of a cat called for a period of mourning and members of the family shaved their eyebrows in respect. Cats were regarded as manifestations of the goddess Bastet and as such they were afforded a ritualised burial which included mummification. They were interred as cat mummies in sacred cemeteries that were situated near the temples of Bastet. Over 300,000 mummified cats were discovered when the temple of the cat goddess Bastet, at Per-Bast, was excavated.

From lioness-goddess to cat-goddess

From the 3rd millennium BC, when Bast begins to appear in our records, she is depicted as either a fierce lioness or a woman with the head of a lioness.

Images of Bast were created from a local stone, named alabaster today. The lioness was the fiercest hunter among the animals in Africa, hunting in co-operative groups of related females.

Originally she was viewed as the protector goddess of Lower Egypt. As protector, she was seen as defender of the pharaoh, and consequently of the later chief male deity, Ra, who was also a solar deity, gaining her the titles Lady of Flame and Eye of Ra.

Her role in the Egyptian pantheon became diminished as Sekhmet, a similar lioness war deity, became more dominant in the unified culture of Lower and Upper Egypt known as the Two Lands.

In the first millennium BC, when domesticated cats were popularly kept as pets, during the 18th dynasty Bastet began to be represented as a woman with the head of a cat and ultimately, by the 22nd dynasty emerged as the quintessential Egyptian cat-goddess.

In the Middle Kingdom, the domestic cat appeared as Bast’s sacred animal and after the New Kingdom she was depicted as a woman with the head of a cat or a lioness, carrying a sacred rattle and a box or basket

This can't be real? 800 bucks? I guess it's only 6 1/4" inches tall.

Just written my newest lyrics. I want to post them also here:

The Cat Behind The Tree

Where is the cat, where is the cat
The cat is not very fat

In the garden the cat is free
And You want to try to see

Running around to search the cat
And the cat is not fat

Maybe the cat is behind the tree
Hidden well, You cannot see

Looking behind, You see the cat
The cat is not very fat

Sometimes, if You cannot see
Maybe the cat is behind the tree

Problem solved, found the cat
And the cat is not fat

What?
Oh...From Gerald Stern
Another Insane Devotion

By Gerald Stern
This was gruesome—fighting over a ham sandwich
with one of the tiny cats of Rome, he leaped
on my arm and half hung on to the food and half
hung on my shirt and coat. I tore it apart
and let him have his portion, I think I lifted him
down, sandwich and all, on the sidewalk and sat
with my own sandwich beside him, maybe I petted
his bony head and felt him shiver. I have
told this story over and over; some things
root in the mind; his boldness, of course, was frightening
and unexpected—his stubbornness—though hunger
drove him mad. It was the breaking of boundaries,
the sudden invasion, but not only that, it was
the sharing of food and the sharing of space; he didn’t
run into an alley or into a cellar,
he sat beside me, eating, and I didn’t run
into a trattoria, say, shaking,
with food on my lips and blood on my cheek, sobbing;
but not only that, I had gone there to eat
and wait for someone. I had maybe an hour
before she would come and I was full of hope
and excitement. I have resisted for years
interpreting this, but now I think I was given
a clue, or I was giving myself a clue,
across the street from the glass sandwich shop.
That was my last night with her, the next day
I would leave on the train for Paris and she would
meet her husband. Thirty-five years ago
I ate my sandwich and moaned in her arms, we were
dying together; we never met again
although she was pregnant when I left her—I have
a daughter or son somewhere, darling grandchildren
in Norwich, Connecticut, or Canton, Ohio.
Every five years I think about her again
and plan on looking her up. The last time
I was sitting in New Brunswick, New Jersey,
and heard that her husband was teaching at Princeton,
if she was still married, or still alive, and tried
calling. I went that far. We lived
in Florence and Rome. We rowed in the bay of Naples
and floated, naked, on the boards. I started
to think of her again today. I still
am horrified by that cat’s hunger. I still
am puzzled by the connection. This is another
insane devotion, there must be hundreds, although
it isn’t just that, there is no pain, and the thought
is fleeting and sweet. I think it’s my own dumb boyhood,
walking around with Slavic cheeks and burning
stupid eyes. I think I gave the cat
half of my sandwich to buy my life, I think
I broke it in half as a decent sacrifice.
It was this I bought, the red coleus,
the split rocking chair, the silk lampshade.
Happiness. I watched him with pleasure.
I bought memory. I could have lost it.
How crazy it sounds. His face twisted with cunning.
The wind blowing through his hair. His jaws working.

Been a while since I used the forums. Is there a good way to make it so it doesn't take up the whole screen? It shows up normal when I uploaded to imgur.

If we will be without internet (and without telephone) for many days, from 18th to 28th August (or much longer), then at least I have the 785 image-files, and I can view them everytime...

Last night Frank and also I myself have dreamed, we would have a new cat / 2 new cats. I really hope, it was a vision from our future. We want to have a new cat or 2...

Hello everyone,

I want to learn a little bit more about the different IMG Codes here, after I had to repair some old threads in my own forums (my forums for parasciences).

One of my photos in Photobucket will go into the tests now:

Hello my friends,

after 3 and a half months I am shortly here today.

I have thought of You the whole time. Now I wanted to post the next photo on Photobucket, but I cannot load the page. See it as a sign from me, a life-sign. You can still go to Photobucket via my latest photo-posting.

I will look here a little bit, before I have to logout again.

BTW, I love the flower-greetings from the other cat here...
