first ever

hey all,
i pretty much suck at this whole preset thing, but i'll probably be able to get better if i spend more time at it (i've only put a good 15 minutes into it).

annnnyways, after playing with ****** a whole lot, i came up with this:

liquid lightning
================

[preset00]
fRating=3.000000
fGammaAdj=1.993000
fDecay=0.980000
fVideoEchoZoom=1.904762
fVideoEchoAlpha=0.100000
nVideoEchoOrientation=3
nWaveMode=4
bAdditiveWaves=1
bWaveDots=0
bModWaveAlphaByVolume=0
bMaximizeWaveColor=1
bTexWrap=1
bDarkenCenter=0
bMotionVectorsOn=1
bRedBlueStereo=0
nMotionVectorsX=0
nMotionVectorsY=9
bBrighten=0
bDarken=0
bSolarize=0
bInvert=0
fWaveAlpha=1.000000
fWaveScale=7.321607
fWaveSmoothing=0.180000
fWaveParam=0.900000
fModWaveAlphaStart=0.750000
fModWaveAlphaEnd=0.950000
fWarpAnimSpeed=0.909091
fWarpScale=1.210000
fZoomExponent=0.400000
fShader=1.000000
zoom=7.113811
rot=0.020000
cx=1.280000
cy=0.500000
dx=0.000000
dy=0.000000
warp=0.055772
sx=1.000000
sy=1.000000
wave_r=0.950000
wave_g=0.600000
wave_b=0.650000
wave_x=0.500000
wave_y=0.370000
per_frame_1=wave_g = wave_g + 0.350*( 0.60*sin(0.835*time) + 0.40*sin(1.081*time) );
per_frame_2=wave_b = wave_b + 0.150*( 0.60*sin(0.814*time) + 0.40*sin(1.011*time) );
per_frame_3=dx = dx + 0.03*( 0.60*sin(0.334*time) + 0.40*sin(0.264*time) );
per_frame_4=decay = decay - 0.01*(frame%2);
per_pixel_1=zoom=(zoom-1)*rad+1*warp/(x+.01);
per_pixel_2=blah=rad+2+(warp/time)/(y+.01);

and then from scratch:

past the canyon
===============
[preset00]
fRating=3.000000
fGammaAdj=2.000000
fDecay=0.990000
fVideoEchoZoom=2.000000

nVideoEchoOrientation=0
nWaveMode=0
bAdditiveWaves=0
bWaveDots=0
bModWaveAlphaByVolume=0
bMaximizeWaveColor=1

fModWaveAlphaEnd=0.950000
fWarpAnimSpeed=1.082800
fWarpScale=1.000000
fZoomExponent=1.040600
fShader=1.000000
zoom=1.020000
rot=0.000000
cx=0.500000
cy=1.459999
dx=0.000000
dy=-0.040000
warp=1.030301
sx=0.923400

wave_r=0.199900
wave_g=0.199900
wave_b=0.799900
wave_x=0.500000
wave_y=0.500000

it would be awesome if someone played with these and retained the main ideas, but sort of cleaned them up...
also, milkdrop says i have errors. i probably do, seeing how i just put in random things in the equations.....
one more thing, how could i get my colors to scroll around in "past the canyon"?

thanks a bunch everyone!

thanks =]

take a look at the presets that come with MilkDrop.

the ones with colour cycling have wave_r, wave_g, and wave_b functions in the per_frame equations. Do something similar. I usually use the equations from asymptote as a base. Nice and smooth, and not too fast.

Considering you're new to this, I'll give you some extended comments =]

Liquid Lightning:
per_pixel2 is completely redundant.
The whole preset seems very fast. Kinda all over the place - which would explain the lightning part. I think wave_type 4 is the wrong choice for this sort of effect. It looks a bit messy. I'd also suggest fiddling with the per_frame decay equation - sometimes it's very bright. I'd suggest changing your video echo opacity, too - 0.1 is too transparent to really notice. Overall, the preset doesn't really do anything particularly special for me - not bad for a first effort though.
PS - I didn't get any errors.

Past The Canyon:
Basically, this preset is completely missing per_pixel or per_frame equations, which severely limits the effects you can do. Unfortunately, this means there isn't much for me to comment on, either. Have you used Zylot's drowning as a basis for this? The blending effect seems similar... just without the equations.
The hue shader seems a bit pointless... without colour cycling, it only looks like weird banding in the background. Using wave_type 0 for the effect seems like a strange choice, but it works pretty well.
Experiment with some fancy equations. See what you can come up with.

Btw, have you read the preset authoring manual? It helps when you're just learning.

First off, thank ye for the kind words.

Now, I like Liquid Lightneing for the most part, but Past the Canyon has no change in it, which hurts... Like Krash said, take a look at the Preset Author doc to figure out how to do some nifty stuff, then look at some presets that copme with Milkdrop to get a feel for how different things work.

One thing not mentioned though, nice names

What do you wish for?
