Congrats to billy for passing 40,000, and DrO for passing 30,000.

I just passed 50k myself.

We should reach 250,000 points total by tomorrow.

100k done...

There's only 8 active members at the moment though. For a forum this big, that's absolutely woeful.

Plenty of people here have decent/multiple pc's, so i really hope you have a good excuse not to be folding. Even if you've got an old system that can only return 1-2 work units per week, it's still a worthwhile contribution.

For the people that are active though, keep up the good work.

I still can't get teh consol only version to work. I tried it earlier. It said [20:13:57] Working... and then i came back 6 hours later and it still says that. I'm back to the graphical version (but I keep it minimized to the systray).

good and bad news.

good: got FAH installed on two of my other machines here at home. Won't be able to run them as much as i'd like, but it's still more than just this machine that I am currently on (which is the fastest)

bad: the good machine (aka, this one) freaks out now when I start up FAH for some reason. Screen goes black, and stays black, and I have to force a reboot. No idea why. I might try the command line version (yet again) but i've never gotten it to work for me. grrr!

/edit
Installed cmd version in its own directory. Let's see if this fixes anything...

[14:27:52] Completed 0 out of 1000000 steps (0)

now I just have to hope that changes after a few hours ;p

Boinc is the engine that seti and other distributed computing projects run on - folding@home is running a beta to see if it can use it too, and I would have joined, but, er, yes. I missed it (o;

Hey y'all!

So, this folding@home thing........ does it only do it's thing while the computer is idle? I'll probably join up, but I don't want it eating up all my speed while I'm trying to use it.

/edit
Question the second: How do I sign up and join a team? I don't see anything about teams anywhere on the site, never mind registration.

Quite simply, the impact of running Folding@Home in the background is negligible. Even the most discerning users won't notice it. Windows allocates CPU time slices according to process priority, and as long as the Folding@Home client is running as an idle-priority task (which is how it runs by default), one shouldn't notice any slowdown. Remember that we're also running FireDaemon in the background, and the impact of this small service management tool is also negligible.

With the results we've seen here, one more exuse for not donating excess CPU time to the Folding@Home project is gone. Whether you're playing games, encoding media files, surfing the web, slaving away in a cubicle at work, or mumbling to your computer, running the Folding@Home client won't slow you down. To effectively fold, however, you will need an always-on Internet connection. Also, expect to pay a few dollars a month extra on your electric bill as your system's CPU crunches away at full tilt all the time. In my book, those are small sacrifices, especially if you count completing a work unit as your good deed for the day.

okay, one more question

How often do the stats update? I keep getting messages in the console like "Completed 2600000 out of 200000000 steps <13>", which I assume to mean 13%. However, I'm using the konfabulator widget that was posted above, and it reads me as being at 0%, with 226 points. The stats page on the folding@home website lists me as having 0 points, and 0 active processors. What's going on!?

Im moving up the ranks ranks rather quickly. Thanks in part to the fact that my ps3 can do a WU in about 6hrs but its probably more due to the fact that there appears to be no other active members at the moment on ol' team winamp. Wheres the compassion? The philanthropic drive?

I've considered installing the client on all of the lab machines at this school.
