hey, women like a man who has twice as much as most others

And On that day, the Lords of the land said unto their Master Architect, "The temple you have made to the gods of Wasabi and Maki has brought us no great prosperity" and they sent out him into the lands.

As he traveled to a far off land, he found he wasn't traveling alone, but that he had gained companions, and when they found their new land, they started work on a new temple, one that would be OPEN to all who wanted to worship.

I've co-opted my office machine, so am merrily crunching on three now (admittedly one is a slow-ish 486....)

SETI@Home as it is now is finishing soon Check the website

What are we going to do afterward? Continue with the 'new SETI'?

imo, as this is the SETI crunching team, unless there is a mass break that wants to do purely protiens, i say continue with seti@home2. they sent out an email saying that they're gonna focus on 100 or whatever prime canidates that they have hunches on, so there should be plenty of units from that, too.

Although I've only submitted one so far. I reckon I can do one in about five hours if my PC isn't 'distracted'

You should all use SETI Stash to keep a backlog of units to process. I'm currently unable to return any results but I have about 25 units cached to be working on .

Just did one in 3hrs 18mins on my Athlon 1733. There is no stopping me now
Managed to procure an emergency fan and CPU is down to half-respectable 57C. Gonna kick some ass! Wonder if there is any way of installing this thing across my entire school LAN (about 200 PCs, mainly 700mhz Celerons) without anyone noticing? I'll do it if it has to be one at a time

It's not difficult to do one at a time. Just go on the computer, go to seti's webpage, download the client, and install. Then go to the next computer, go to seti's...(oh and you can use a cd/floppy to make it quicker).

im happy to still be in the top ten... I have the apple doing nothing but pounding out workunits (I don't think it has been restarted in about a week or so i should do that... meh next week ).

I let my pc do work units when I'm at work but last week work was canceled because of snow and this week is spring break. I still let it do workunits at night when im asleep tho.

give me another 5 or 6 days and I'll put in 100 more. I have my dad's machine set to download 100 work units at a time, and it processes about 10 a day. He leaves it running 24/7, and only uses it for about 12 hours a week, and I thought it was a shame to waste all those clock cycles on an XP 2100. along with my PC which sends in 10 every 2.5 days, I figure I'll do pretty well.

by the way, try using SETICommander it lets you download up to 500 work units at a time and you can store just as many, and you can set it up to automatically get more units when you process all the ones in your cache.

he just rebuilt it so this is all I know about it thus far,
AMD XP 2100 @1.7 GHz
512 MB of RAM(not sure what type though)
80+ GB of hard drive space with a redundant RAID drive
I don't know any more about it because he just rebuilt it, and I haven't had time to look up what the other details are. he might have overclocked it, but I'm not sure.

it takes it just under 2.5 hours per work unit. I think the main reason that it does them so fast is that he only has about 15 processes running at any one time, so SETI gets about 95-99% of the system resources for all but 12 hour per week.

Odd... my computer is faster than that, and it STILL takes longer to process work units. Then again, I'm constantly doing other things.

I did figure out, though, that it runs faster when minimized. Is this something I should have known all along? lol

Yes, but it's the difference between a 10 hour work unit and a 3.5 hour work unit - that seems pretty strange to me.

it used to take 3 days to do a workunit, when i went to the command line clinet, or even simply ran minimized, it went down to 10 hours. it's been said many many times that you should use the command line client, metal

Chica, if your running the GUI version that shows all the graphs stop doing that immediatly. Download this and put it in a new directory. Don't run it yet!

Now download SetiStash
Unzip that and read all the instructions, readme's etc. It's dead easy to setup. Then all you have to do is load seti stash which loads a small GUI window with a ist of WU and a few control etc. This will control the command line version for you so you don't have to worry about it.

It looks something like this:

and will minimize to your system tray.
