SPAIN should not be aligned like that:
code:
S P A I N
+ R U S S I A
-------------
N O R W A Y

It should be aligned like the rest:
code:
S P A I N
+ R U S S I A
-------------
N O R W A Y

Anyway, easy:

code:
4 7 6 8 3
+ 2 5 4 4 8 6
-------------
3 0 2 1 6 9
--------------------------------
4 6 0 8 7 8
9 8 4 5 8 5
+ 2 6 3 8 5
-------------
1 4 7 1 8 4 8
--------------------------------
3 6 4 3
1 0 1 7 9 1
+ 9 1 2 7 1 7
-------------
1 0 1 8 1 5 1

And the (now obvious) keys:
code:
PIRUOWNYSA
7825013946
EADKSTXINV
6879523140
OLSKNIBMHA
3079248561

So I suppose I get to post the new riddle. Well, here's one of my old favorites:

A king wishes to find if the three wise men (Paul, Peter, and Patrick) he employs are really as wise as they claim. He summons the three, and tells them the challenge:

"Each of you will sit in a chair, and may look only forward. You may not speak to each other, though you will be in earshot of each other."

"Paul will be able to see Peter and Patrick."

"Peter will be able to see Patrick only."

"Patrick can see no one."

"After you are all seated, I will put a hat on each of you - two of the hats will be white or black, and the other one will be the other color - either two white, one black, or two black and one white. You will need to determine what hat you are wearing."

So they sit in the designated seats, and the King puts the hats on, and the King asks Paul:

"What color hat are you wearing?"
"I don't know", replied Paul.

So the King moves on to Peter:
"What color hat are you wearing?"
"White, your majesty.", replied Peter.

How did he know?

(No, they cannot see their own hats)

Freedom of speech is the basic freedom of humanity. When you've lost that, you've lost everything.

simple...the only way for Paul to be unable to tell the color of his own hat (without lying of course) is if both Peter's and Patrick's hats are of different colors (meaning that Paul's could be EITHER white or black). Peter knows this, and thus knows that his hat must be the opposite color of Patrick's (otherwise Paul would have known the color of his hat), which he can see is black...therefore he knows that his hat must be white.

Somebody else can post a new thing, time for sleep.

Excellent.

Ok, then, another oldie (but goodie):

A man must cross a river, by going across a bridge. It will take him 7 minutes to get across, going as fast as he can. There is a gaurd, which sends him back, every time he tries. The man notices that the gaurd sleeps for 5 minutes, and is awake for 10. How does he get across? (The gaurd will catch him as soon as he steps foot on the bridge, while awake - there is no other bridge - the river cannot be swum across)

Excellent xzxzzx

FYI: Here's what I have for:
code:

S P A I N
+ R U S S I A
-------------
N O R W A Y

SPAINRUOWY
3694521879

(with a zero to the right of the N in SPAIN)

I failed to realize that Y=A=9 for the first puzzle.
Although the instructions don't say each letter must be a unique digit, I think it is missing from the instructions as anubis2003 suggested. The alignment is taken from the magazine.

Else, the solutions are very simple.

While that will work, I think that it assumes that the digits are unique. Otherwise:

a=b=c=d=e=f=g=h=i=j=k=l=m=n=o=p=q=r=s=t=u=v=w=x=y=z=0

Solves any puzzle like that

I think the alignment in the magazine is a mistake - there is no solution if the alignment is like that, and you assume that each digit is mapped to a letter once, and only once.

Freedom of speech is the basic freedom of humanity. When you've lost that, you've lost everything.

Man walks across bridge while guard is asleep.
Man turns around before the guard awakens.
Guard assumes trying to cross to the other side (the side the man originally came from) and sends man "back" (to the side he wants to get to.

???

Or does the guard merrily let people go away from him/her?

[edit]
I agree, xzxzzx. It didn't occur to me about Y=A until too late. My answers to p2 and p3 where a 1-to-1 mapping of digits to letters.
Else, as you wrote, the answers would be very simple

He walks by the guard while he's asleep and turns him around in his sleep so when he wakes up after 5 mins he pretends he was coming from the "other side" so he will be "sent back" but it'll actually be the nex side?

Wild guess that was.

Brain = ouch

I though maybe it was some fibonacci series with adding the digits.
1 = 1
2 = 11
3 = 21
5 = 1211
8 = 111221
10 = 312211
13 = 13112221

But of course the 10 line borks this up.

Hey look! Each line has an even number of digits! What about some digit grouping? Wait, that doesn't help.

What about some obscure prime function? Oop ack. 21 isn't prime.

Then I was transfering the numbers to another piece of paper.
This is what I was saying to myself:
one
one one
two one
one two one one
one one one two two one
three one two two one one
one three one one two two two one

The answer is right there.

Found it after some more grouping attempts and transferring the numbers to the third piece of paper (21 is where it hit me).

Here's my favorite.

Let a = b

Multiple both sides by -b
-ab = -b^2

Add a^2 to both sides
a^2 - ab = a^2 - b^2

Factor an a from the left and factor the right as the difference of two squares
a (a - b) = (a + b)(a - b)

Cancel the common factor (a - b) from each side
a = a + b

Since a = b, replace b with a
a = a + a

Combine like terms
a = 2a

Rewrite a
1a = 2a

Cancel the common factor a from both sides
1 = 2

wtf?

Cancel the common factor (a - b) from each side
That's the mistake: a-b =0, you can't divinde something by 0, boths sides are already 0 becasue it's just any number multiplied by 0!
By dividing by a-b th ewhole equation becomes wrong!

Right?

Wrong...(a - b) = 0, so you can't "cancel" it, because doing so requires division, and the math oracles have decreed that you can't divide by zero (although I decree that you can, and that the result is infinity).

That's it, you're out of time:

There were two men. The first had 3 small loaves of bread and the other 2. They_walked to a spring, where they sat down and started eating. A_soldier joined them and shared their meal. Each_of the 3 men ate the same amount. When_the soldier departed, he left 5 bezants to pay for his meal. The_first man took 3 bezants, since he had 3 loaves, whereas the other took the remaining 2 bezants for his 2 loaves.
Was the division fair?

Not really.

(Insert tiresome discussion about fairness, compensation, and divvying procedures here).

If you pool the bread and divide the loaves into 3 pieces each, there are 15 pieces to share. Each will consume 5 pieces.

Person1 had 3 loaves = 9 pieces
Person2 had 2 loaves = 6 pieces

Person1, essentially, gave the soldier 4 pieces.
Person2, essentially, gave the soldier 1 piece.

Therefore, person1 should receive 4 bezants while person2 should receive 1 bezant.

(Insert killer rabbit scene here)

Cars can't drive.
Answer 1: It was daytime or there was enough natural lumination.
Answer 2: The car turned at an intersection before coming to the intersection with the dog.

I edited my response.

FYI: I toggled my smartass variable. It is now set to false.

It's funny when the riddle-asker can't understand the answer.

How obvious do I need to make it?

Daylight comes from the ___? (rhymes with pun)

The sun is a ____? (rhymes with car)
