Stalling? It's clearly a giant sperm.

Or, the more conventional solution has already been posted by festerhead (coin, duh).

Remember the decree? Let an upside down 9 equal a 6.

Exchange the 8 and 9, then turn the 9 upside down.

9 swap with 7. 8 swap with 7. 9 with 2. 5 with 2. 8 with 2.

code:

1 3 1 3 1 3 1 3 1 3
2 4 -> 2 4 -> 9 4 -> 9 4 -> 9 4 = 13
7 5 9 5 2 5 5 2 5 8 = 13
9 8 7 8 7 8 7 8 7 2

The maximum needed is 3 * the number of stars. This will put a small triangle around each.

The minimum is still being worked out...

This one is dumb.

A man gave his two children, Foo and Bar, 10 cents and 15 cents respectively. What time did this transaction occur?

Damn you. Ah, I would have gotten it in a few minutes. (I realized it was 4, but I couldn't get the lines in the time I let myself not do work in).

10:15, maybe? This had better not be one of those "well, you see, 'c' in children is the roman numeral for 100, and "cents" could be a misspelling of sense, etc, ad absurdum"

You're on the wrong side of noon
Assuming 10:15 = 10:15am

[edit]
The two lines above don't make much sense anymore. They did when I first typed them.

Summary: 10:15 is incorrect
[/edit]

A bit like the previous one this.

Arrange 9 points in a square (3 rows of 3).

How many straight lines to pass through all points without taking your pencil off the paper ?

No he didn't. He gave 15 to one, and 10 to another - do you mean to tell me I can cut a quarter if half, and it's still valid currency?

Anyway, that was quite stupid. And arbitrary riddles would indeed kill this thread.

Example:

"What's in my pocket?"

Show what is wrong with this proof:
[list=1][*]let A=1 [*]let B=A [*]multiply both sides of (2.) by A, you get AB=A2 [*]subtract B2_from both sides, you get AB-B2=A2-B2 [*]factor left and right hand sides, you get B(A-B)=(A-B)(A+B) [*]divide both sides by (A-B), you get B=A+B [*]plug A=1 and B=A into (6.), you get 1=2 [/list=1]

You can do it in one.

Point, line, and plane are undefined in geometry.
Make the line wide enough to pass through the nine points.

thankyouverymuch.

and festerhead, point line and plane are all defined in geometry, and a line does not have a width. it either passes through a point or not.

Here's a reasonable one.

After seeing Fred's recent class photo from his elementary school, everyone at the Winamp family gathering started looking at old family pictures. Foo commented that when he was the age of Bar in the old photograph, he was twice as old as Fred is now. Bar added that it was four years ago, and in two more years, Fred would be half as old as he is now. Fred said to Bar, "You and Foo are ten years older than I am. I bet I'll be taller than you when I'm that old."

How old are Foo, Bar, and Fred now?

they are defined in concept, they just don't have a definition in mathematical speak (like "add" and "subtract" - these are basic concepts). a point has no dimension, it is simply a point. a line has no width, it is simply a line. same with plane. this does not mean you can arbitrarily apply a width to a line. on the contrary, that's exactly what a line can't have done to it. it's one dimensional. a point is zero dimensional. this is why it has no dimensions in other directions.
