edit: whoa, there was a totally sorted reply to my question as i was posting it, that's convenient...

J_Bloggs: helpful

out of general interest though, my hair wasn't red, it had blonde highlights at the time, and the "red light" is because the white balance in my camera was off when i took that picture for some reason.

aren't you from germany or somewhere nearby (apologies if not!). the "ch" in "loch" is pronounced the same as in "bach" and a few german words (which i don't know).

I know zootm, you said this in anotehr thread sometimes becasue people were coming up with "Lock Ness" pronounciations...this I somehow remembered from you. don't know why..but you ARE able to pronounce it, right? (Yes, I am from germany originally) "loch" means "hole" by the way but I think I already said that somewhere else too...

yeah, we use it instead of "lake". well, actually, there is one lake in scotland (it's called menteith or something, i forget) the rest are lochs.

Is there an online pronounciation of it at all? I'd like to have a go at saying it

Everyone thinks my dad is Scottish, he likes putting on a Glasgow accent ^_^ (I can't spell Glasw...)

you could post the word in the phonetic alphabet, then everyone (who happens to know phonetic script) can pronounce it perfectly.

Well, the 'ch' in 'bach' is just pronounced like the 'j' in the Spanish 'Juan', 'Jose' etc. (And NO, not just like an 'h', then you've always said it wrong!!! )

It's best described as a harsh sound from in your throat.. (sounds nasty...)...that's the best I can do to describe it

zootm: helpless

i hate to be a tool - but i dont know how you pronounce "bach" and therefore cant spell it... sorry

however, do not lose hope young munchkins, for the IPA chart is here - complete with sounds for all the different, um, sounds

anyway, explore that if you want, the sound that i always thought you ended "Loch" with sounded kinda like this

tell me just how wrong i am
