No, poofball would be strapping yourself up with body armour in case you get a nasty bruise and stopping and starting every five minutes for a rest, generally played by, well, the clue is in the name....

Right here!

But in seriousness, I don't care particularly about who wins. Having to hear about it in every moment of every goddamn day for the next decade is another matter though. There's nothing quite so quintessentially English as being a bad winner.

(Edit: worth noting that I'm not your typical "England-hating" Scot, and a lot of my immediate family are English)

We were better, we were better WE WERE BLLLLLOOOOOODY F*CKIN BETTERRR.

AAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGH.

Croatia has proven once again that they're one of the top 5 teams in the world right now, and who claims otherwise is bloody clueless, We DOMINATED the entire game. Brazil only really had 2 chances, one was a brilliant shot by Kaka (goal), the other a brilliant header by Ronaldinho (saved even more brilliantly by Pletikosa). We had more chances, but luck (and most of the time, it was really luck) was on Brazil's side. The ref too (not that much, but his criteria weren't even).

And we have proven once again that our supporters are the best in the world.

I have to say, for the last few months I have refused to be swayed by the media, and believed that Ronaldo's big gut was just muscles or something, and he was still the star player he was in 2002 (With the pube haircut).

Then I saw him do NOTHING in around 65 minutes. Godamn fat shit.

To be honest, I thought the Croatian defense was pretty average. Ronaldinho was cutting them up, and while your boys were concentrating on him, the other lads were able to get itno good spots in the box.

Pretty average ? What on earth are you talking about ? Sure, Ronaldinho had some good dribbles, but he only once (1.) shot at the goal. A header. Which we saved. He had some great passes. Which we blocked. And what did Adriano manage to do ? Nothing. Did he try to ? If they were average, what's good ? And what's great ? Back line of Zeus-Poseidon-Apollo-Hercules ? They did not make a single mistake. Except maybe allowing Kaka to shoot from distance. If someone screwed up, someone'd fix it. Someone'd pass two players, and then hit the back line and lose it.

Hmmm... considering just how craptacular the US did against the Czechs, it will be interesting/deadly boring to see if they can even move against Italy on Saturday.

Oh yeah... go Socceroos!!!!!!!!!!!!

Defense does not win games. Go England, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Netherlands, Trinidad. Not in that order though....

I am so important I feel the need to let it be known like a liberal discovering the internets for the first time. Uh hur hur hur. I also wash myself with a rag on a stick.

Although Brazil's performance today was crappy, I thought that defensively they have improved a lot over the years (though still not even close to world class). Also, today they simply couldn't get their rhythm going well, it seems that some players were setting it up really well, but the rest were messing it all up - and I don't even want to talk about Ronaldo today.

To be fair, CR are a really good team. I'd bet they would get to the 1/4 finals.

They may stop after every play, but atleasrt something interesting is happening when they do run a play.

And pads: they're weapons, that just happen to double as protection. Soccer players can't inflict shit with shin guards.

Noobs all of ya .

hgnis : Oh, yes they do. In any case, we more than deserved to draw or win. Again, Brasil got lucky. So, Ronaldo didn't do shit, well, Klasnic, who's as good a striker as he is (before you whine, he's probably the most respected striker in the Bundesliga), also didn't do jack. He couldn't, but he also didn't do much running.

Man, there were, like, 3 isolated periods of time, not longer than 5 minutes when Brasil was dominating. Heck, they didn't even score then. And Logy, stfu.

Yeah Brazil were made to look very ordinary by Croatia, and it took a cracking strike from Kaka to score. Dada Prso is a quality forward as well.

I knew that they were highly ranked, didn't realise that it was #2. My dad and I were asking each other which US team was gonna show up at the World Cup. It looks like the squad that never got beyond high school did.

I guess you're right ShyShy - the US team has got enormous hype built up by the media in this World Cup. They state the reason as their good performance in the last World Cup - but that time they were playing in an average group - heck, the whole WC itself was average then. This time they've put put up against top class European sides on European soil itself - and it has started showing!

I watched the Germany match today. I gotta say the Germans were very dissapointing, and the victory was just a last-minute fluke.

However, I was very impressed with how Philip Lahm performed - brilliant in attack & defense. He was rightly declared the man of the match. No wonder Chelsea are behind him now...

I don't like the germans but have to say that they their performance against Poland was very good. You are right, they just made the 1:0 in overtime, but missed MAANYY chances (Miro Klose alone had 5 chances, remember the header) before and the polish keeper was very good today.

The pads are far worse as weapons than the body parts they cover. They're protection and little else. I like American Football (which is genuinely occasionally referred to as poofball here) but it's more of a spectacle than a sport. Whereas I don't really like watching football (soccer), but there is quite a lot to the game.

As for diving, I heard there hadn't been a lot of it this year? Some sort of crackdown?

Yes, there has been a crackdown.

FIFA came up with 8 or 9 things that the refs should clamp down on and not take any shit on, things like diving, time wasting etc.

More here.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...06/4999648.stm

The polish keeper got booked last night for wasting time and not taking the a goal kick straight away , he wandered over to have a chat with the defence first or something.

As a former referee myself and my dad currently one, we are ecstatic that FIFA finally got their heads out of their asses. I saw a couple of games that I did think that the refs were a bit quick to pull out the yellow, some of those "fouls" were badly called.

Damnit! Now I can't remember which game it was, maybe Spain vs one of the African teams, in which the ref rightly ignored the dives. Awesome

This will be an interesting worldcup:
- England just were lucky, Trindad & Tobago performed way better
- US...no, actually that was expected. At least they have the highest count of bodyguards and choplifters in their base camp...I fear this doesn't add to the end result
- Brazil played like the Germans in earlier cups, uninteresting but successful. Ronaldo who?
- Germany develops in Brazilian direction...occasionally
- Croatia and Sweden weren't very successful yet but ran like hell until the end

It's like fastingaciu wrote: you'll never know what's going to happen in soccer. Me, I'm in support for Germany or Trinidad & Tobago go go go

T&T performed better considering the fact that they're a worse-rated team, yes, but England were still statistically on top. They really need to get their act together if they want to get any further in this competition though.
