w00t! We're through to the next round.. I can't wait for the match against Argentinia... We'll have to play better than today though, but hey, that second goal was a beauty.

You mean first and third (Angolan). The second (van Nistelrooij) was good, but nothing too special.

The ref was a complete failure here. At least 3 CdI penalties and one Netherlands penalty he didn't want to give.

And that Zokora (I think) shot was pure brilliance. Shame it hit the bar. Feel sorry for CdI. I like them and N. the same (more than the average) though.

Serbia & Montenegro SO failed it was funny. Argentina put a great display, but man.... 6-0. You can barely beat a third league amateur club 6-0 these days.

England are delibarately playing crap, I dare say they'll step up several gears (when least expected) and score shitloads.

No, I'm deluded.

Portugal didn't look that impressive today.

I was going through the stats of this little competition, but somehow my attention was diverted to more interesting happenings.

In the mean time, over at this side of the pond the contest is on for Sir Stanley's beaker.
In the finals, Carolina Hurricanes vs. Edmonton Oilers.
Caroline leading the series 3-2.

Nothing irrelevant.
In Europe, it's the World Cup that has the largest attention span at this time, in Canada it's the Stanley Cup finals, and in the US it's the cheerleaders.

Yep, despite the flurry of yellow and red cards that reduced USA to 9 men & Italy to 10 men, I feel truly proud about the way Americans played so bravely & spiritedly to put Italy, one of the world class teams and title contenders, to shame!

A draw was so much satisfying, when really we had predicted Italy to inflict something like a 5-0 drabbing on us!

The usa vs italy game did suck. The ref was an idiot in both sides, usa and italy. In usa for that crapy red card and in italy for so many offsides called although some of them were fair.

I don't know why the coach didn't put Eddie Johnson in near the end of the second half. I think if he had put him in and taken McBride out in like the 75th minute, with Breezy (or whatever his name is) and Johnson having the two freshest legs on the field, I think the US could have squeeked one in.

On the other hand, he may have been worried that they too would end up with yellow cards, or worse, and they would be out even more players.

I don't know if anyone saw the post-game, but that ref was suspended in '98 for "iregularities that were condoned by fellow referees" and was not allowed to ref in the '02 Cup. Why they let him back is beyond me.

He was an Uruguayan referee, so really from the instant the match started I knew what we were going to be in for!

Referees from Europe have always been professonal & consistent with their decisions - mostly owing to their experience officiating the top European leagues & championships.

Latino referees, on the other hand, have always been arrogant and harsh with the players & they are more than happy to flash their cards at every possible opportunity. This is also owing to the nature of their domestic leagues they are used to officiating, which are in my honest opinion not close to European standards.

Also, FIFA don't really follow a ranking of the top referees in the World, whom they can call forward to officiating in the World Cups - they just pick a handful of those they know or like, from each continent and give each one some random set of matches to officiate.

Before I write this, know that I'm not rooting for or against anyone in this match.

The Mastreoni red card was more than deserved. He had no chance to get to the goal, he tackled from behind directly with the sole of his shoe. He could've seriously injured Pirlo. That's called a cynical tackle, I think and is grounds for a direct red card. A brasilian playing for the rivals of my favorite club, in the game vs them got sent off 15 seconds after coming in the game because of a tackle like that. Of course, the bitches whined, but even they knew that it was undeservedly so. What he did is no better than what de Rossi did. He only did it with his foot.

The Gattuso goal was legal. The guy who passed him the ball back wasn't in an offside position. He was a few moments before, but when the other player passed him the ball, he wasn't. At least from what I've seen.

The ref also allowed USA get away with crap they shouldnt've in the defense. At least in the 30 minutes I watched. He was, well, erratic in his decisions. A surprisingly good one followed by 2-3 moronic mistakes.

I also think that all the refs should be from Europe, with a few exceptions that are on the level. I've seen too many matches on big competitions decided by moronic refs.

Italy played without an idea, with noone excelling, or being good even. A better team (read: most of those in the World Cup) would've taken all three points from them. I can't deny the, will, persistece and, err...... spunk (heh) of the USA team, but they didn't show anything yesterday. I wouldn't be surprised if Ghana destroyed them.

Beat me but I found all red cards to be deserved. If those guys can't play without grounding the other team they should switch to American Football.
The ref was totally ok, if the players (both sides) wouldn't have committed so many fouls there could have been a fluid game, but apparently this wasn't possible.

For my money, Ghana have been the best team of the group. But typically for an african team, half the squad are on yellows, some are already banned from the next match (for the most needless of tackles).

Hats off to the yanks for exposing Italy for what they really are, a parade of drama queens who have always been fortunate with decisions. I guess sometimes the luck just runs out.

I fully expect Australia to trance Brazil later. They were boring against Croatia, it may have something to do with half the players being complacent/lazy (take your pick). The Aussies were the exact opposite against Japan.

So then, they should win 2-0 or so (I'll be back later to gloat).

No doubt.
I've never gotten the opportunity to watch such bitches mob the field except when I watch Arsenal's opposing team
Even on the off chance that the U.S. team makes it past the preliminary round, it will be their extent in the cup.
They're still a few years off from being a true powerhouse especially given that they aren't a full time roster.
What started off as a 1)NBA Finals, 2)US Open, 3)Stanley Cup Finals weekend for me has suddenly been altered drastically.
The Mavericks of the NBA have been turdworthy the past two games, The golfers at the open are playing at my level while the Cup is getting some pretty surprising games going on and the Oilers and Canes are having some of the most exciting hockey in recent years.

That's just it, there was no 'special stuff' from kickoff to final whistle.

Ah well, a real game kicks off in 15 mins.

Well, let's see.

Apart from the (legit) penalty, I can't think of a single decision that favored Croatia. He blunted tens of our attacks, by signalizing offensive fouls that just didn't exist. Including a few where there was absolutely no contact (nothing like that happened on the other side). He also didn't whistle the fouls the Jap defense made, especially in late game. And there were some pretty obvious ones.

No, he didn't give a red card, he did however rule our best defensive player out of the next match with a yellow card. A jap player was offside, he did nothing, R. Kovač had to foul him, and complained about the offside. He gave him a yellow card.

The biggest opportunity Japs had also came from a very obvious offside he "forgot" to signalize. Luckily, the guy shot pathetically (or didn't shoot - the ball probably hit him in the foot and went out).

He was abysmal. And he's European. Heck, he was also more than obviously exhausted in the end, and just wasn't there.

Oh, I can remember one. He was standing there like a moron, and the Japs screwed up an attack by hitting him with the ball. Although, a few minutes before, he also didn't move when necessary, and thus some Croat didn't have room to shoot.

It's not lost, all you have to do is beat Australia and the 4 points should carry Croatia through.

Assuming Brazil beat both Australia and Japan.

Watched the Aussie game at an Australian pub this morning, it meant getting up at 6:30, having maybe 5 hours of sleep. Although they lost, it was a great time at the pub, and thumbs up for the few Brazilians fans that braved coming in.

Aussies are a funny group, I cracked up several times from some of their comments. But, I'm disappointed that no one broke into Waltzing Matilda.

My favorite comment coming from a soccer newb: Oh, I get it, so when a Brazilian falls, the Aussies get blamed and Brazil gets a free kick.

The fans showed great sportsmanship by applauding the game at final whistle
