How do I apply a DSP plugin to an input from a mic?

Hello there wonderful Winamp forum. Here's what I want to do: I want to be able to use a DSP/audio effect filter (or maybe more than one), real-time, on any input source, such as my desktop microphone or line-in from my sound card. I've been looking at various winamp DSP plugins and there are a bunch I'd love to play around with.

I'm a total noob to Winamp plugins, so I'm sorry if my question is very basic.

Will I be able to do this with just about any Winamp DSP plugin or do I need something special?
