Why is my music garbled

Why is music recorded as MP3 at 48kHz garbled whereas when recorded at 44kHz is ok?
I downloaded SHOUTcast server v2.5.1.724, Wimamp v5.666 & SHOUTcast Source DSP v2.3.5 from ShoutCast.com.
It runs fine with MP3's recorded at 44kHz but at 48 its speeded up & garbled. Clearly there's some unnecessary or poor (or both) resampling going on. I'm guessing its in the DSP as whilst playing corrupted music using the SHOUTcast port (8000) if I unmute the WINamp volume on my server the direct sound is fine.
Someone suggested somewhere (I don't have the link/details) that an equaliser plugin resolves the problem but I can't find that plugin to download.
