I ran out of things to do.

Another feather in the cap so to speak - I finished my first year of teaching computers to elementary students a week and a day ago, but although that's good, there's bad too.

I've been full time teaching (or counseling) since 2001, but my career has gone a shitload of directions, so it seems that every year is a first. This is the first year that I've really had nothing on the side - no coaching, no school bands, very little DJ work, no band to bang on drums for, no paint crew, nothing but day job and home.

Because of this, I've been going nuts. I've been going to work every day cleaning and organizing shit for next year and doing everything I can think of to stay busy. I help the custodians move shit for carpet cleaning (even though I don't get paid for it), I ripped apart 4 old (but good) 3-way speakers to make small hanging satellites (midrange and tweeters w/ crossovers) and a sub box hidden behind shelves. All this was hand-made and painted. I had to use two old receivers to make sure it all sounded right - one for subs, one for satellites. It's all connected to the teacher computer and DVD/VCR, so that I have good sound when I need it. It's not currently 5.1 surround yet because I need to find something good enough to use as a center channel speaker, but I digress...

The problem, if you call it a problem, is that I'm so used to being overwhelmed with shit to do, that I don't know what to do when I actually get a good amount of free time. I have no family and few friends within a thousand miles. The job market for summer work in this area is literally non-existent. This town has little more than shops that sell food and other basic necessities - nothing for bored people. I will be doing some long distance traveling to see family this summer, but just on a few limited days.

I even ordered a new camera in hopes that it would motivate me to find shit worthy of picture taking, but I haven't figured out what that would be yet.

I'm going crazy here - what should I do?

Hike and take pictures.

Learn to draw. If you can draw already, hike and draw and take pictures.

Learn Photoshop.

Explore.

How far should I hike?

What should I take a pic of?

As you can see, there is a deer trail. Maybe if I take a mountain bike a few hundred miles I might catch a deer.

Sounds pessimistic, but I need some serious help in this place. I do have a lot of fun with Photoshop - maybe I'll mess with some pics that I have of times when things were more interesting.

radio controlled cars or airplanes are an awesome way to waste time, if you go planes get one of the ones made of that stuff that looks like corrugated plastic but is nearly unbreakable, kind of sucks spending $300+ and at least 20 hours on one to toothpick it on the first flight.

I hate everyone, so you don't have to.

Get into macro shots. And if you want to spend lots of time return the S5 and get a model with raw mode instead, eg. the Panasonic FZ18 (which is so noisy that you'll also have lots of fun playing with different nr software).

^ That might be worth looking into - I've seen that before but haven't yet tried it.

I'd go the Ethan H way, but I don't have a ton of money right now. For now I've been ripping old jazz records to the computer (real-time recording).

Is it available for the S5? (Seems like it.) Last time someone mentioned it it only supported DIGIC II cameras.

write a novel. That photo above would make a great first chapter.
