Setup & Basics FAQ
What is Winamp Remote ?
Winamp Remote is free software for your PC that enables you to play and share your music and videos on the go. For a quick summary of the various ways to use Winamp Remote, go to Remote Media in your Winamp 5.5 player's Media Library, log in, and click the "Available on mobile & more" mobile-phone icon at the top right of the interface. Do I need to leave my PC on and connected to the Internet to use Winamp Remote? To play and share your own music and videos on the go, you need to have your PC on and connected to the Internet and to have Winamp Remote running (when Winamp Remote is running and connected to the Internet, you will see the green ball with the yellow lightning bolt in your Windows system tray). However, even when your own PC is disconnected, you will be able to stream music and video friends have shared with you through Winamp Remote. Why do I need to create a login and password during setup? Your login and password enable you to access Winamp Remote from Remote Media in any Winamp 5.5 player's Media library and from Web browsers on any PC or Mac, compatible mobile devices, the Nintendo® Wii(tm) and the Sony® PlayStation® 3. Entering an email address at setup is optional. Why would I enter my email? A valid email is needed to recover a forgotten login or password. Also, associating an email address with your account enables all the capabilities of email-based sharing through Winamp Remote. When you share music or video with friends, the sharing email will come from your own email address. When others share content with you, they will show up in your Friends menu. How do I validate my email address? If you included an email address when you created your account, a welcome email will be sent to you. Simply click the link in that email to confirm your email address. If I don't enter my email address at setup, how can I add one to my account? After logging in to Winamp Remote from the PC interface (either from Remote Media in any Winamp 5.5 player's Media Library or from any Web browser at http://www.winamp.com/remote), and from the dropdown menu at the top left go to Settings > User Account > Emails. How do I add songs and videos to my Winamp Remote index? Winamp Remote automatically indexes these folder paths on your PC by default: - C:\My Music - C:\My Documents\My Music - C:\My Documents\My Videos (-- The following paragraph is provided by Nunzio390) If your files do not exist in the above folders, just right-click on the Winamp Remote icon in your Windows system tray, select Configuration, click the Remove button to remove those folder paths, and then click the Add button to add the correct paths by navigating to the folder(s) you want to add. (-- Thanks for pointing to this omission) To add additional folder paths, just right-click on the Winamp Remote icon in your Windows system tray, select Configuration then, on the Media tab, click the Add button of any media type to navigate to the folder you want to add. How do I use Winamp Remote on my mobile phone? Easy: just go to http://winamp.orb.com from the Web browser on your mobile phone and enter your login and password. When you click play on any music or videos, your stuff will automatically play back in the right media format and at the best available bitrate. NOTE: To use Winamp Remote on Mobile, you must have a wireless data plan, Web browser, and a streaming media player: 3gp, RealPlayer®, Windows Media® Player, or Flash®. Charges from your wireless carrier may apply for Winamp Remote on Mobile. Not all services are available on all wireless carriers or all wireless devices. Check with your wireless carrier to confirm that product use is consistent with your carrier's Terms of Service. Winamp Remote does not support the streaming of DRM protected music. Your friends will get an email with a link to play your favorite songs, videos, and playlists. To ensure ONLY they can play your stuff, they'll be asked to create a free account but will not have to download Winamp or Winamp Remote. Once you have logged in, simply select items and click the Share Selected icon in the top navigation bar or drag and drop items into the playlist area at the right (if you do not see this area, click the "Expand/Collapse All" icon in the upper right). Then click the Share button at lower right and select the email button in the popup that will appear. Here you can enter your friends' email addresses and a personal message. Now you can share the experience without transferring files! How do I share music and videos via SMS to friends' mobile phones (US only right now) through Winamp Remote?
