Expect

Anyone ever heard of this language? I just downloaded it to write a script to gather VLAN information from a bunch of 3com switches that i'd otherwise have to telnet into manually. Haven't even read anything about it yet, but it looks cool. Interestingly, both perl and python had trouble with this. Is an interactive program like a switch management something that those languages just aren't that great for?

Over two years later, I have to say that the Expect perl module worked incredibly well for this.

I finally got around to writing the code about a year ago (the whole mess has since been replaced when I finally figured out the SNMP OIDs to do this).

I have some Expect scripts I use all the time and it's really fun to sit there and watch a command execute on a giant list of network hardware, one at a time.
