how to identify kind of file from extension?

How does winamp recognize that some extensions correspond to audio files and some to video files?
(I refer to buttons "Only Video" and "Only Audio" in dialog "Winamp Preferences" on page "File Types")

Thanks in advance

that is determined by the input plug-in associated with the file type returning "0" or "1" in response to a metadata check on %type% with "1" indicating it is a video format. the default if not known is to assume it is audio ("0") which copes with most 3rd party plug-ins which don't support the metadata apis implemented in v2.9.
