Old Photographs

While visiting my grandparents over the holiday, my grandad pulled out an old box of photos that he'd found - dating from the mid-thirties peace, right through the war and into the fifties.

I've attached a wartime one for everyone to see - it is the Western Desert, 1943. I have to confess I don't know if it is one that him/his colleagues did take, or whether it's a "postcard" sort of image (there are some of those from Calais, later on) - but it's something that's nevertheless interesting (for me at least).

If anyone else has old photos they want to share, how about a thread here to post them in? Just an idea, anyway...

Its not a postcard, it cannot be a postcard. the plane crashed in the forground is an allied fighter.

Never be alowed as a postcard.

That is a cool photograph, but man, he needed to learn how to take a level shot, heh.
I really do like that image, and the idea of this thread.
But I have no old photographs of my own. So I can not contribute to the cause.

Could be a postcard... It's a Messerschmitt Bf 109. Not Allied.

hehe I think it's more to do with the cameras and developing of the film more than anything else.... 1943 is a fair while ago!

I'm off away now for a few days, but I'll put a couple of other pictures up when I get back... there's some others that are also fairly good.

By the way... if anyone wants to use the pictures to illustrate college/school work, I don't mind...

Oooohhh... hopefully I can get a scanner soon, I just got a whole bunch of pics from that era from my grandmother. My grandfather had even taken pics from a concentration camp after the Germans were taken out.

Cool thread idea, c2R, hopefully I can contribute soon!

What a cute dog! Typical spaniel, too bloody curious!

It's been said that I could start an arguement in an empty room.....I see no reason to disbelieve this.

could you tell us more about that pic (5.5 gun one) c2R? Such as where was it taken, and anything about the gun?
I really like it, and seems to be a rather dramatic/arty shot, but without trying.

Here's a bit about 5.5 guns: http://riv.co.nz/rnza/hist/local/bl55in.htm
- as you can see it's a medium range weapon, with a maximum range of 16,4km.

I'm afraid I can't say a lot more about the photo, as all I've got to go from are the notes that my grandad has penciled on the back. I wonder who came up with the idea to try the camera at night, it really is a fascinating shot.

Anyway, it would be after December 1943 (before that he was in the desert, and at Cairo), and before mid-1945 (for obvious reasons).

I think it might have been in the Rheinland, as there are other pictures that look as though they've been developed at a similar time of the Rhein. It's definitely not the desert though!

I like the way the dog is looking at the camera. He looks curious to me.
