BUG: winamp crashes when playing very short files in succession

ok, weird issue... while working on this:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=334543

i was in the simple Local Media view and arranged everything by length, so my short files of 00, 01, etc were first. double clicked the first one which it skips, let it play about 5 of the next ones, then double clicked the first one again, play ~5 more, then the first one again, and it crashes. happens every time. seems related to this bug:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=331724

not only does winamp not like and skip short files, if you try to play them successively, it will skip and eventually crash.

EDIT: i should add i'm using DrO's dll from the first link, but some of these short ones are flacs, and i doubt the DLL (meaning DrO's changes) has anything to do with it anyway.

ok, so i played around with this a bit. haven't been able to reproduce on another app... itunes, WMP, fb2k, vlc, etc... all seem to handle it fine.

tried some things in winamp. i took the first five shortest files and made them my playlist. then i turned on repeat playlist and it would do so, many many times without crashing. thats interesting i thought, b/c if i manually would click the first shortest one in ML after ~5 files, then by the third time it always crashed. the manual-ness of clicking in ML seems to have something to do with it.

i then made my playlist two files and repeated, and while technically winamp didn't "crash" it did become completely unresponsive and i had to "hard close" it.

granted, i am stressing winamp in a somewhat unusual way, BUT i think these issues are enough justification, imo anyway, to resolve it properly b/c winamp has a very real and NOT unusual situation where it skips short tracks in normal playlists, (see link above).

(in the ML, i have two "00" files and 7 "01" files. so i used the first 5, sorted by length. they are real, legit files with actual sound in them i'd like to reliably broadcast).

I tested the "freeze" bug with one 0 second track using Repeat Track. It plays the track forever and Winamp becomes unresponsive. The only (decent) way out of this was running Windows Task Manager and setting Winamp's process priority to Low. Then I could do a rightclick on Winamp's icon and Close it.

Could a possible solution be to force a 1-second pause (or shorter) after a 0 second track has played?

seems you confirmed my findings. related to this too i think:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=334756

in this case, if winamp could smartly "pad" silence into the beginning or end or both of short files, it would probably fix it. i think winamp does ok if each track is about 3 seconds long.

but that would only workaround and coverup the underlying weakness winamp apparently has with short or missing files. i am guessing its the same weakness in both cases. i think DrO said it had something to do with how short files get sent to the output dsp.
