Happy Birthday Ayn Rand!

http://news.google.com/news?q=ayn%20rand&hl=en&ned=us

Today would be the 100th Birthday of Ayn Rand.
For thoses who don't know, she was an author, and the founder of the philosophy of Objectivism

A buddy of mine has posted on his Blog, ten things Ayn Rand has taught him, and she's pretty much taught me the same things:
  1. in any compromise between good and evil, only evil can win. in other words, don't compromise any belief.
  2. sacrifice is the surrender of a value. full sacrifice is a surrender of all values.
  3. the government only effs things up, especially where economics are concerned.
  4. i will not be ashamed of my accomplishments.
  5. never apologize for your beleifs. EVER.
  6. there is good. there is evil. there is no in-between.
  7. money is the end result of man's God given capacity to think.
  8. the evil in this world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it.
  9. decisions are best made according to reason, not emotion.
  10. forcibly taking things away from people for the "common good" is not only unrighteous, but an unimaginable evil.

Places a lot of emphasis on the word 'evil', make of that what you will....

Black and White are technically not colours anyhow, just extreme shades of every other colour, so my art teachers always used to tell me.

I disagree with the "There is no in-between". I hardly think cold-blooded murder is on the same level as telling your boss that you're sick when you just want the day off to go to a movie.

I've read a lot of Rand. She writes well. If you get past the point that she is very well versed, her philosphy, for me, is awful. That's just meeeee.

Oh Happy Birthday, ya' crazy bitch!

Ayn Rand... she seems to be the favourite philospher of u.s. right-wingers (after ann coulter ). I have't read any of her actual works, but I will. I've read ABOUT her, and I like the very straight way of not allowing compromises between good and evil, even if that is easy to use against various things, like the conservaties like to do today, but trying to think like a moralist can be refreshing somethimes.

What I find most annoying is the folling part

Yeah, we all know that business is run by moral people who will pay acceptable salaries to the workers and build only safe and non-plluting factories factories if they woudn't have to pay tax. And as the early idustrialism (that is still going on in the 3rd world) showed us, the Capitalists will fix all th social security including kindergartens for the employee's children.

1st post has some [IMO] very incorrect information. Objectivism means something quite different. I don't want to go into detail about what I feel it means, becuase I don't have that amount of time. Shortchanging it wouldn't feel right to me.

haha. Please send corrections as soon as you have time, whacking right-wing interpretations of philosophy is always fun. It seems like letting neo-conservatives who believe in Adam Smith style economical liberalism read Rand can be compared to giving Marx's idea of communism to pshychopaths.

Be careful:

I liked The Fountainhead
It's an interesting read...her politics, to me, are dreadful, but very well represented.
