Opinions Needed

ok, here's a sneak peak at thepyr0x's and my current project. Since i'm doing the graphics, i need some help/suggestions/opinions on a particular thing (other than in general, which i welcome as well)

the screen shot's attached, and i'm wondering if anyone can come up with a better way to lable the pl, eq, and ml buttons other than the way i have it now... Location won't be changed unless it's a brillian idea, however .

General commentary is also welcome.

Looks pretty sweet.

You could make some kind of icons for the labels.
I've seen this done before on 2x skins and it
looks nice. You just have to get creative in figuring
out what they should look like.

Good luck...

I'd use it. I might even abuse it.

there's not a single real useful suggestion there! thanks for the input, but i tried thinking of an icon or something, and i'm not sure how i could fit it in the space i have without just not bothering to label the buttons and making it cleaner....

uiop - lipstick? that's not exactly what i was going for

dogwings - what exactly are you trying to suggest this looks like?

anyone else?

Use anti aliasing inside the skin! (that would improve lots)

Looks good, what are you going to put where?

what you see is what you get, a lot of this skin is(or will be) drawers, and things that don't look like buttons are, so a bunch of stuff is hidden. The area below the pl, ml, and eq buttons is a button to expand and contract the corresponding component as the buttons, which is attached to the main skin. The metal region below the glass area is a button to rotate taht up and out, which'll display the seeker, xfade, shuffle, and repeat (i don't think people switch those around too much) and various song info. The greyish bar in the middle is the volume, and hte metal edge and left area of the metal region is a button for a vertical thinger (to be implemented as soon as it's possible)... so it's pretty much covered, and i don't think there's anything else i'm going to add. ThePyr0x offered to help me on(meaning do all of) the scripting for this thing. So he has the hard job.

Sorry bout the anti aliasing, i did most of the region definition by hand (i know you can tell) so it's not blended.... do you konw of an easy way to do that? it's only the diagonals that need fixing imo.

uh oh, maybe i ought to rethink this whole concept. This is supposed to be wholesome family entertainment here.

I think the problem with the drawer over the play buttons (i like the idea) is that if too much stuff is open, there won't be anywhere convincing for the drawer to slide to.... but i'm trying to think of a way to either make one or fake it.

constructive critisism is good more is better

Exclamation UH OH

I surely didn't mean to imply that this skin is phallic in any way, but now that I look again.... no. It's a long stretch of the imagination to get that. But since the connection has been made, I will use it, but withdraw my offer to abuse it. My tree doesn't lean in that direction.

I thank you now i can sleep in peace knowing our skin will not contribute to anything other than mp3 enhancing pleasure.

but then, there were quite a few going the other way, weren't there.... not that i'm naming names... I don't see how it works either, myself.

[edit] i just reread, i suppose all this is my fault [/edit]

your skin (which i pray to be completed) is like
a cool gizmo and not "lipstick" .
small, tidy and eye catching!
man, i like your style!!!!!
and it will be perfect with the video.wac
speaking of:... will it include the thinger?

i dont understand your reply about the sliding cover!
will it be, or wont?

as far as graphics production goes...3 things i notice:

1. work on your anti-aliasing more, particularly parts like the engraved lines, they seem quite jagged when they curve but they shouldnt have to.

2. the arker inset areas of the orange. (where its basically brown)
it the vertical bar in the top middle and the c buttons and the pl eq and ml text.....seems like you could pay more attention to how you do colour/light these. maybe use an inner shaddow or something. these areas seem flat and make the rest of the skin sem flat (which doesnt seem to be what you're going for).

3. the "glass" area on the upper right. maybe if youre using photoshop try using a layer style to do the highlight more precise. the underlighting (ie the yellow) seems alright but it's the white part of the highlight that still looks a little rough. fixing that bit of white highlight up a bit will help it look a lot more sniney and smooth.

cheers. keep it up.

um, no, but i do plan to finish it. it's just that 1. the current design isn't possible (mostly cause of the vertical thinger (yes there'll be one, it's on the left) and 2. School kicked in. ECE is taking up a bit of time, especially when i'm trying to keep up my music at the same time (writing and singing, not mp3s).. so i'm busy busy. That and having a girlfriend is stealing all my time away (not taht i'm complaining... well, about the school yeah)... So, i'll work on it when i have spare time and remember.

Raj, thanks for the tips, the truth is i'm horrible at paiting by hand, and the highlight was from the original version with the glass on the left, and i couldn't get it to look right, so i just stuck it on... it's mostly the same, but not quite, cause it's not symetrical. and also for the dark area's i was looking for a kind of floating lcd effect... it's just a black layer at 50%... and i'm not sure how to make it look like i want.

kingo'mountain, the problem is that this skin has so many drawers and moving areas that a cover on the c buttons would be akward, because all the parts around it move, and the covere wouldn't have anywhere to slide to (to make it look real, i know it could just disappear). so probalby not, though i just got an idea while typing this, which i might try if i have time.

It will come! i just need a new beta and some time. and thanks for bringing it back up... it was slipping.

I like the concept! The multiple drwer is kind of hard so I'll help you out. The attached script is a multi-drawer that I used for my Less is More skin. I hope that it helps you.

Woah, looks like kingo resurected this dead thread. I remember this skin from way back when. It had some really cool concepts. Like the multi-drawer.
