Decent Randomness

Dear Jim,

Could you fix it for me for winamp to actual shuffle with some degree of randomness when you tell it to shuffle. Could the same level of randomness also be used when randomizing a playlist.

Thanks,

Olly

what do you mean by decent randomness? If you don't know what will be played next, is that not random enough?

ctrl+p >> General Prefrences/Playlist >> bottom of the window "shuffle morph rate"

move the slider more towards "fast"

I would like to ask what exactly the shuffle morph rate does. How is randomness calculated?

Instead of maximum randomness we should be asking for maximum variety. Ie. intellegent sorting that gives weight to higher rated songs, less popular artists, doesn't play two versions of the same song, etc.

BTW winamp's randomizing algorith really isn't random. Somewhere on the net someone made a visual representation of it's output and you can clearly see banding. Activewinamp can better randomize the playlist, but rather than skipping around the playlist it scrambles everything up beforehand all at once, so you can't go back to non-randomness on that playlist.

unless you can run something to infinity then nothing on a pc can ever be said to be truly random, only psuedo random.

O11Y: along with the active winamp forced playlist re-organisation you can have a look at the methods described in this thread

Just to clarify:

What I mean is that when you tell winamp to play randomly. It does...to some extent...but it usually just plays a random collection of about 18 songs in a loop, which is great until you have a playlist of 100-odd songs, when it's annoying, cause you only hear 18 songs.

So the other option is to shuffle the playlist. This is okay, except songs bunch together, so if you shuffle say 3 albums you get 4 songs off one, 3 off another, 3 off the other, and then 4 off the first again. If it was trully random surely this bunching wouldn't always occur.

It's been proven that pure randomness does produce clusters of similar numbers. Just look at things like lotto numbers. You'll see more often than not, the winning numbers are pretty closely related.

there is no such thing as "random" anyway. Even in the lottery, wha thappens is a result of pure physics, and given the proper data, the numbers that are pulled coudl be precicely calculated. The same goes for rolling a dice, flipping a coin, etc.
