Podcasts don't show up

I tried to activate the podcasts for an ipod nano 4G with newest Winamp and ml_ipod from today. It worked once, but then I fiddled around with the settings, added some more podcasts, and now on my ipod when I choose podcasts the screen is simply white and empty.

I tried to reproduce the environment that worked as far as I remembered (settings and only the test podcasts), tried to reset the ipod, but nothing helps. As soon as I put any podcast from the media library on the ipod or when I choose sync podcasts the podcast screen is white.

Is there something I can try? Thanks...

I managed to recover the ipod by simply deleting all files on it in Windows Explorer. After that the apple sign appeared and the ipod started with the language selection again. Everything fine again.

Then I started to try what the reason could be. I used two podcasts to do this:

http://podcast.hr-online.de/hr2_wissenswert/podcast.xml
http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/...5lsotd/rss.xml

A german one and one from the bbc, to make sure its not podcast dependent.

Then I found out that the error is related to activating the "remove rated podcasts" checkbox in ml_ipod's settings. This is what I did:

- activated the ipod in winamp by pressing "Restore or initialize an ipod..."
- ipod shows up. no settings changed in ml_ipod.
- load hr (file1) on ipod, eject : ok
- load bbc (file1) on ipod, eject : ok
- load bbc (file2) on ipod, eject : OK

So far so good. Everything ok! Now I tried out if deleting and loading more ipods triggers the error:

- delete bbc (file1) from ipod, eject : ok
- load hr (file2) on ipod, eject : ok
- delete bbc (file2, the last bbc file) : still ok
- load bbc (file3) : ok

So far so good. Loading and deleting different podcasts does not trigger the error. Next I am trying to activate the rated podcast delete in ml_ipod:

- connect ipod, activate rating delete in ml_ipod settings, eject: white podcast screen!

So simply activating the checkbox seems to mess up the ipod's database!

- reconnect the now "damaged" ipod, deactivated rating delete in seetings, eject: podcasts are back!

I could bring the podcasts back by simply unchecking the checkbox! So I will simply not use that feature. Now I wanted to see if I can still rate items on the ipod:

- rated podcast on ipod, reconnect, deleted bbc3 in winamp: ok

So it looks like it's really just the checkbox. So if you have white podcast pages without any items, while in the ipod main menu you can read something like "3 podcasts" in the bottom line look if you have that checkbox activated.

Developers: I have an ipod nano G4 (portrait display, MB598), firmware 1.0.2 PC, german language set; PC is Windows XP SP3, Winamp 5.541, ml_ipod 3.08 (3.07 had the same problem)

Please have a look if you can reproduce. This bug nearly made me tear
my hair out...

negg, thanks for all this testing!
Must be a specific problem with the 4G nano, I used that settings a lot with other iPods. You are right, if that is set, a special flag in the database is set to allow rating of podcasts (the rating screen is usually not displayed for podcasts at all). You said there a possibility to rate podcasts on your iPod model? That was not present on older models. Does it work exactly as for songs?

Yes, the podcasts in the podcast folder of the ipod have a rating option, pressing the enter button twice brings me there. Its exactly like in the "Music" folders. Is that what you wanted to know?

Yes, that's it, thanks. That is a big difference to the other iPod models, I'll have to code a fix for it...

Hey abu, we ask the user what kind of iPod they're using on first connect, so why not, rather than making this a setting, make ml_iPod autodetect and if it's a 4G nano, disable the hack?

Windows 7 Beta
iPod touch (Second Generation), 8GB
Winamp 5.55 with ml_iPod 3.08

Sure But don't rush it, I first need the confirmation that it works now...

That seems to work. No more "whitescreens" (the Apple equivalent to windows' bluescreens, hehe) in the Podcast page, and automatic removing of rated podcasts works, too!

Thanks for the quick work!

Thanks for reporting. Next, I'll create a version that doesn't need the ini patch, and would ask you to test it...
