VU through lpt

Hey we have a project in school where we should do something with LEDs and the lpt port. My group decided that we should make a VU meter that works with winamp. I got the honour of doing the programming since i know PHP and some c++. But i really dont know where i should start.. anyone that can help me?

how do i get the VU meter value from winamp? i have found some winamp APIs but none that have a command for that.

Would really appriciate your help.

Visualization plugins have access to the VU data

The example vis plugin in that link is straight-forward, so converting it so the data is spit out of the lpt port intstead of being drawn to the screen should be trivial.
