Winamp 5.8 Beta leaks online

"Now, almost 4 years later and ahead of an expected official company announcement, a beta version for the upcoming Winamp 5.8 (winamp58_3653_beta_full_en-us.exe) bearing a build date of October 26, 2016 has apparently been leaked on the web after being uploaded to the public by an anonymous user on a selection of filesharing sites."

Betas are never official public releases. The fact that it was posted anonymously also makes it not an official release. AFAIK posting Betas is a violation of the Beta testers agreement.

This build is just a beta, for sure not official release. It is work in progress test compilation.
It is a shame someone leaked it. But, maybe this situation will remind the RN that they have rights to this program and they do nothing for few years now...

Ps: As far as I remember we (betatesters) did not make any agreement with RN - it was rather something like mutual trust.

I think if u choose a different location than the default/current install, u will be ok, but I am NOT positive of that. Both installs MIGHT share certain locations like for temp files, scratch playlists, etc, idk.

Would def be interested to hear ur exp trying it.

meh, it's winamp. I mostly just looked at the credits and poked around, I didn't play with it extensively, so I wouldn't use it as my primary player over 5.666.

Almost every computer magazine/blog is jumping on that train right now! Soon the term "Beta" will vanish from the articles and all of them will praise the release of the brand new Winamp 5.8 version! Hallelujah!

I am still curious how it happened though. Did someone hack Radionomy's server and steal it? Did someone hack DJ Egg's computer and steal the beta? Was it a "hero" among the testers, who gave us what we have been demanding for such a long time? And was it a "heroic" act at all? Or just theft?

Meanwhile you cannot access the download page. It takes ages to load it and the download process does not complete. At least my Firefox complains. Hence I even cannot make my own opinion about this release. Still running old, good 5.666.

Twitter account was hacked recently, they could have gotten the location and login info from a DM

well, yeah, I doubt they were specifically after winamp, but if you hack an account, why wouldn't you skim through all the messages, find something like an unreleased beta, and post it.

assuming this is legit, and no malware was snuck into it, i approve and applaud the kind soul who very bravely posted this so we, the people who love winamp, can benefit from it.

i just hope the source code is next.

just the new mp3 decoder is alone a big deal, the Q of course being is it better?

other apps like EAC and mp3tag can do metadata lookups and autotagging... so the Q is can a plugin be made to add that stuff back to winamp? (i believe the now defunct inhouse version was itself a plugin that worked with Gracenote for text tags, and allmusic.com for pics)

No, just free software.

The last Winamp mp3 decoder that wasn't technically perfect (in terms of sound quality, iirc there were some occasional stability/security fixes later on) was Nitrane.

you can't see when they make the account which one is a bot and which one isn't

No, that would frustrate legit regulars. Just do the captcha during account signup.

I'm aware that there's already things in place to stop fake accounts (e.g. can't use gmail/outlook/yahoo email accounts). All I am saying is if someone posts something that doesn't look spammy and I have a response, then I will respond. About 50% of the time I might look at posting history if it's a relatively new account to see if it's legit, but this last post for example, I was in line at starbucks checking my fone. So yeah...

agreed, I use a VPN for my daily browsing at work, and captcha won't let me through, so having a captcha every post would just make me post less

I've not posted in a while and just came to see the progress of Winamp.

I'm glad there is a legit FREE version of Winamp that does not need any KeyGen to rip a CD or use Mp3's. The fact that you have to use a LAME encoder DLL proves that this may indeed be a legit FREEWARE leak and not simply an already cracked version of Winamp under an assumed version name.

But I still like the version I have and see no reason to put this version in unless I have a system crash and have to reinstall Windows 10. Then it may be worth a try.

Honestly, after all these years, I don't understand why anyone would use Winamp to rip CDs when there are so many superior alternatives that provided secure ripping i.e. CueRipper.

I usually was a hardcore user of Winamp MP3 decoder and/or CD ripper. It was much more advanced in comparisson to iTunes MP3 encoder for CD ripping.

Now that I discovered much more better alternatives to Winamp MP3 encoder and CD ripper, I don't need to use them longer.
