Well, I must say, this was unexpected. Merry Christmas, indeed!
[edit] BTW, Jones, your Full link is actually the link to the Lite install, in case you want to fix that. |

fixed, added in a couple of the emusic bundles as well for good measure, think that's them all...
/now, the changelog in the beta I downloaded this morning had a security fix listed in in it, as follows... * Security bug fixed in in_mp4 & in_cdda.dll However that seems to have disappeared from the changelog in the version that got released, however, the main winamp web site does still say that a 'critical security flaw' has been fixed, but provides no further details on it. |

I'm guessing they dump a icon on your desktop that links you into...
http://www.emusic.com/ Probably an AOL/WINAMP/EMUSIC offer or something, they did one a few months back. This article explains more. http://www.winamp.com/about/article.php?aid=10613 |

Alas, David Biderman quit today, thus practically signalling the end.
On the "Nullsoft is..." section of the credits, the only coder left is Tag. Maybe Tag and/or DrO will be our saviour(s)... |

I would be interested to know what the former nullsoft employees or someone of AOL have to tell about the current situation.
What (if anything) is AOL going to do with this software? Will Nullsoft cease to exist or live on with just one or 2 coders onboard)? Is there any chance to get it open sourced? The recent magnitude of releases inidcates the latter. But if David Biderman left as well, the former. eeeee eeeeeee eeeee eeeee eeeee 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 88 8eee8 8e 8 8 8eee8 8e 8 8 8 88 8 88 8 8 88 8 88 8 8 8 88 8 88 8 8 88 8 88 8 8eee8 |

I should be happy with a new release but thinking that it might be the end of winamp makes me sad
![]() still I hope either some new coders come on board and do not screew winamp or we get our wish of having at least most of it open sourced :S |

Most pleasing (I think)
The other day I installed version 5.07 and whilst listening to the beloved Duran Duran, I noticed that a perfect mp3 (one that doesn't have any jumps/errors in it) actually jumped/skipped for the first time. I then noticed this happening on other mp3s that I had previously examined and found to be not faulty - they were now in fact jumping at random times and places.
I then installed Winamp 5.08 and so far I have not noticed this problem. I read the change logs and it didn't seem as if anything had been changed in the two versions that would cause this and then fix it. So I am slightly concerned that something else could have caused this. Well done the Nullsoft team for fixing a bug so quickly, if it did exist. Did it? Pete. |

Oh dear.
The problem I described in my previous post is still apparent. Piss.
I am doubtful that it's a problem with Winamp though. I think I will try reinstalling my sound card drivers :S |

Pro askes you for your reg-code at install, full does not.
More n00b friendly for people who just bought it. |

Why not get the Full or Bundled versions you ask? Simple: I only need a very simple MP3 player w/ a keyboard volume control, nothing more. |

eMusic ? huh ?
Merry Christmas All!
Thanks for the 5.08 update, although I'm not quite sure what has been updated apart from the addition of an eMusic icon ? (Does this constitute a new version number?) |

Hi. Festive greetings.
Umm, this was already explained further up.... Quote:
I didn't add any descriptive details about the in_cdda stack overflow vulnerablilty because ALL older versions are vulnerable, and we do not want to advertise the method of reproduction. |

5.04 and 5.02 were the exceptions, because 5.02 was where Justin left and 5.04 where Christophe and Francis left, and they all tried to fix as many bugs as possible on leaving.
There's actually an equal amount of bug fixes listed for 5.06 and 5.07 as there was for 5.01. One critical security fix alone is enough to warrant a new build - but there's actually been 6 of them between 5.05 and 5.08. Sure, there's not been many new features - mainly because Justin, Christophe and Francis are no longer here, but plugin developers like DrO, ShaneH, Joonas, etc seem to be happily/successfully working their way through most of the wishlist. I wish I could say everything was "fine and dandy", but with Steve and now David gone, I'm really not sure what the future holds any more :/ |

LOL another sign of the death of the best player in the world... When you see that all they can release is an update with some "50 free mp3s" crap you know somethings wrong. Everything AOL touches turns to shit. I would totally support winamp turning open source, I want to see REAL DEVELOPMENT! Not AOL crap... Not long until AOL bundles winamp with something like spyware or their im crap.

If you'd bothered to read the thread before posting, you'd find that there are two security fixes included in 5.08, which is the main reason to upgrade to 5.08 Full (see download link in first post) which doesn't include any emusic trial crap.
You should also know that aol has owned nullsoft/winamp since 1999, and that it was a sign that something was wrong when Justin quit last January, followed by Christophe, Francis, Mig, Tom, Steve and David all in the last few months... (note the word "quit", not 'fired'). As for the future . . . well, alas, no-one here knows, so it's pointless speculating. Unless the source is leaked, or aol sells it, winamp won't ever be made open source. The nearest you'll get to that is Wasabi.Player (ex Winamp3). |

I for one would not want an open source winamp. The damned thing would be loaded with code by unknown coders and end up so full of bugs one would not know where to start to get rid of them.
Of course it would be of no use to come to this forum, you'd be on your own. ![]() |

Some random person wouldn't be releasing official versions of Winamp if it was open source. ![]() Also note: Making Winamp open source would practically make it cross-platform compatible instantly. and who would be elected to official release it? In the mean time everybody and his dog would release their own version suited to their own needs.
As you can see withy linux, you end up having multiple versions, and for what purpose? If you don't like the way Winamp is, make a plugin. Don't keep jammering about why it should be open sourced. Open source ultimatly would kill Winamp. If all those people who desire for Winamp to be opensourced are sooo good at coding, make your own. If you can't, you can't touch a Winamp neither. ![]() |

Wildrose we were only trying to show a possible way for winamp to survive since the way things currently stand it looks as like each day that passes a little bit more dirt is placed on top of winamp's grave.
To me winamp will stay in my hard-drive for as long as it works but I'm sure it won't last more than 3 or 4 years at it's current rate of development ![]() |

Open sourcing won't allow Winamp to survive, it will kill it for sure.
Like I said, if you're so good at coding, make your own. Don't mess with what has been a long running success. ![]() |

wildrose-wally just one question: why are you so against open source? (and same thing do Dj Egg)
I'm not saying Winamp is bad today, that a need something more or that I'm actualy good at anything, I'm just stating an opinion. Didn't any of you learned anything from mozilla? ![]() |

No because either Nullsoft revives itself somehow or Winamp is as death as the company.
Tell me you still believe Nullsoft is in working shape? I know I don't and I can tell many of the people arround here that (like myself) believed Nullsoft would survive the exit of Justin and the others are now puzzled to what the future holds. What happens if Nullsoft stops working in Winamp? Will AOL pick it up? I highly doubt that. I still hope Winamp makes it and I'm still a suporter of Open Source though I can admit Winamp doesn't need it, I'm just saying it could be one way out of this near death experience. Call me a pessimist if you want but I do believe Nullsoft doesn't have a bright future. Of course I could be wrong (and so I hope). |
