I addressed this in my latest column,

Quote:
Internet Radio has never been more thriving than now. As the technological age continues, more and more people are migrating to internet radio. This brings up our first issue. Is your station going to be different? There are hundreds of thousands of internet radio stations out there, what is going to make your listeners prefer you over your competition?

Be Different!

Every station needs something to call their own. Whether it is your motto, your logo, your music, your website, you need SOMETHING to keep people coming back to you! Make your website and stream engaging, get your listeners involved with your DJs, and other listeners. Repeat traffic is a big part of getting your station going because it is more than a station, it is a community, or at least it SHOULD be. You're bound to fail if you don't have repeat visitors.

yeah, i'm back.

Well just as a suggestion, get a voice person, someone who isn't often used, and that would be like your station's signature voice. I know a few stations who do this, it's an excellent thing to make people say 'oh that's hitz106!'

Another thing, do something different on your station, don't just give away a tshirt, but maybe have some sort of contest.. Something to draw people in

yeah, i'm back.

You need to map out exactly how you want to make your station different. Write down your goals, values and most importantly what are other stations NOT doing, that you could?

I discussed this a bit in my article at the U, http://www.webcasteru.com/DowntoBusi...0Nov_2004.php.

There are many ways to make your station different, but no matter what, you must have:

- Unique Name
- Unique Playlist
- Unique DJ's
- Unique method of operation (yes, this is possible)
- Unique website
- Unique contests (or you can rip some off radio too, because its funny)

And make sure not to rip off any websites of other broadcasters, this has happened to me (someone ripped me off 4 times), and unless your ready to tame a huge raging bull at you, i would advise you don't do it.

I Make. Perform. Mix. Play. Music.

A bunch of suggestions:

Try to differentiate as all the previous posters pointed out. Question is how. There are multiple ways, but the idea should be to make radio as interactive as possible. The idea is to retain the listeners you have and generate enough word of mouth to get new ones. So somethings you can try out are:
1. Allow people to dedicate songs. Especially interesting if you have a live DJ and you can maybe setup skype calls or something(could be just couple of shows a day)
2. Allow people to vote to select songs that are playing.
3. Allow people to chat while listening. Something like a shoutbox. Basically create the community feel.
4. Segment and target. Use different time slots to play different type of songs, rather than a mixture of everyting.
5. Extreme step but would be very impressive. Allow people to DJ. The way you can implement this is ask people who are interested in DJing to mail you. They don't need to be professional DJs. Then you can basically setup a skype call with them and transfer the stream over shoutcast (their voice)and either you play the songs or you can setup a vnc connection which would allow them to. I know kinda long stretch but what the hell.

I think your option in terms of promotion are rather limited, so I won't go in there, so you have to differentiate with product.

Yes, interaction is KEY! The station should be engaging. I definitely look for this in any jock I hire. You'll realize that I call my jocks, jocks and not DJs. DJs are commonly referred to as just playing music and not really having the key personality to talking on-air.

In the FM business jocks are called On-Air Personalities.

Sorry for getting a little off topic, but on-air personalities lack in internet radio--find a good few and stick with them. You'll see positive results.

Ditto on the two above... Real On-Air personalities are good.

Trust me, people like the personalities. I call mine DJ's but they are jocks... its just common in my mind to alot of people to call people DJ, even if they are jocks. (personal operating preference of course)

I Make. Perform. Mix. Play. Music.

Oh Shows is the best thing that gets people to tune in to ur station .
I have a live request show - people requesting what they want .
Oh a Mix Show is Great
Having a a BROADCATER on the show will be better .
Don`t just play songs in an order - like a top 20 show with only songs.

if you can`t have a real person to do promos , their is a free software on the internet no need to download jut go to www.sitepal.com click om try it and you can record audio their with diffrent voice by typing what the person want to say (just click on add audio then text to speack) then use a program and record them)

Thats what i do for my station - i have diffrent voices on the station.
