I use this for unheard audiobooks (Hoerbuch is German for audiobook)

( Genre = Audiobook || Genre = Hoerbuch ) && ! Playcount >= 1

Audiobooks, that is, mp3 files with genre tag "Speech" (as listed in ml_iPod's audiobook settings) don't show up in the audiobooks menu of my iPod nano 1G. I use the latest iPod firmware, Winamp 5.52, and ml_iPod 3.04.

Is this to be expected for nano 1G? I transferred the files after checking for correct audiobook settings.

I think the firmware is hardcoded to only show .m4b files in the Audiobooks menu...

Depends on FW version and ipod model. It's fine on my 2G nano, but not on the classic. Only m4b and aa are guaranteed to show up there.

Audiobook Good news/Bad news

I've just updated my 5G 80gb iPod to firmware version 1.3. MP3 Audiobooks are now showing up under the Audiobooks menu where they had not previously. Unfortunately, they are sorted by track title instead of album name, so naming tracks by chapter title instead of "book title 1, book title 2, ..." results in an unholy mess.

I post this because I know it was an interest and frustration a few months back. I hope someone can take it and run with it!

Do i really have to convert?

I use an Ipod Nano 4gig photo compatible not video.
I installed winamp 5.531
I installed the ml_pod file iPod_Support_v3_04.exe
In winamp preferences under ipod support i added:
Audiobook
Speech
Spoken Word
Podcasts

I took an mp3 file, a lecture at Berkley (http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_feeds.php it is so cool that they do that), and added it to my local library. then sent to ipod. It didn't show up under audiobook> just under Music> so i took it off, renamed the genre to audiobook, again no luck.
Back when i used itunes I had this exact file in the audiobook section but itunes might have converted it during sync. yes/no?

The playback feature is important to me
but the read audiobooks FASTER setting in the ipod WAS the reason i bought an ipod (it cuts the time of a lecture down to ~75% and keeps me from getting distracted)

DO I HAVE TO CONVERT MY MP3's TO THE AA or M4B FORMAT?
has anyone else with this model been able to make it work?
What do i do?
If i must convert everything manually what is the best converter to use?

Maybe it's just a spelling problem, but this check is case sensitive. So if you hae "Audiobook" in the prefs, the genre must be "Audiobook", not "audiobook". Or you have to add both spellings to the prefs list.
It shouldn't be necessary to convert the file. (BTW: you wouldn't be able to convert to AA, as this is a proprietary format with DRM. Only audible.com can produce this)

Like Abu said, it is case sensitive, so try that out.
If it still doesn't work , you could try this.
You could convert single mp3 files into m4b, or a collection of mp3s into one m4b file (I do this for audiobooks that have been split into multiple mp3s, to take advantage of iPod's bookmark function)

Audio books are really taking off. From their start in the 1950s, sales grew slowly for the next many decades. But from about the start of the 21st century, audio book sales soared to $871 million in 2005. Consumers have been discovering the benefits of spoken books. Some of these are:
Audio books are good for older, ill or recovering people and can be wonderful gifts for those in a nursing institution. They are gifts they will remember and enjoy time after time.

For me, mp3's marked as audiobook or speech have all the features of an audiobook, but just not show up on the audiobook menus. Just make a smart playlist for them. I have a 5.5G 30GB.

Hi guys,

I've been using Abu's ml_ipod plugin 3.05 and it worked in my iPod Nano 3G Video.

I didn't have to convert the mp3 audiobook. I just placed 1) Speech in the genre and 2) placed Speech in the ml_ipod plugin Speech/Audiobook options. Then I synced it over.

I didn't use this feature until yesterday. I really didn't have to configure anything else since it was default for the ml_ipod plugin to use "Audiobook, Speech, Spoken Word" as genres for audiobooks.

BUT I have another problem, it's an off-topic, how do I stitch together several audiobook parts? I'll probably start another topic for this.

For this current topic, Abu's ml_ipod 3.05 works in iPod Nano 3G Video.

As I had said in my previous post:

You could convert a collection of mp3s into one m4b file (I do this for audiobooks that have been split into multiple mp3s) using this

It's free and I haven't faced any problems till today.

@mindspaceindia,
Hey the merging worked! Thanks for the suggestion.
Can you also suggest something that can create chapter marks?

ml_iPod does that natively if I'm not mistaken.
Here's a screenshot:

@mindspaceindia,
So that's the purpose of that thing. hehe!

For my foreign language audiobooks, the length varies so I don't think this chapter marking would be good for my use. But it's good to see an effort in ml_ipod.

I was hoping for something similar to chapter master or if MP3 to iPod Audio Book Converter can produce chapter marks in the mp3 that it converts.

Nevertheless, thanks again!

Regarding fritzcm's post, should chapter marks created in the likes of "Chapter Master" remain intact once the audiobook has been copied to the Ipod - I just end with a single part once I have tried, it would be handy to have chapters listed with names in them rather than arbitrary chapters.

First of all thank you for this nice tool (Ml-ipod)enabling me and others to circumvent apples monopol.

As a big fan of Audiobooks I would love to use the Audiobookfeature of my Nano 3G 8GB. Sadly my rather large collection of audiobooks is with Split mp3 files and I would like to keep it that way.

Is there a way to either

-convert a couple of mp3 files (representing a complete audiobook) while transfering it with ml_ipod to the Ipod to end up beeing recognised as a single book.

or

-another workaround without the need to convert any files.

Many thanks in general and a lot more esspecially for this request.

Regards
A.

No, there is nothing like that. I listen to audiobooks a lot myself, and I always create one large *.m4b file for that. It's much handier than a collection of little MP3s. Any special reason why you don't want to go that way?

Have a look at http : / / www (dot) fre ei po dsoftware (dot) com (Remove all the blanks, this stupid spam protection kicks in all the time. This is not what I use, I do it with some handcrafted scripts, but it looks very helpful)

thanks I`ll give it a try.
The reason why I dislike it is that I have a rather large collection of mp3 audiobooks which I`d like to keep as mp3 Files. Because this is a rather reliable standard (I am aware of the fact that it is also not an open one) and I have intention to use them.

So there is no way to konvert audiobooks from *.mp3 to *.m4b while synchronising? Keeping the mp3 on the computer and m4b only on the Ipod?

thanks anyways

Converting them - yes (well, kind of: only to *.m4a, but that's the same internal format, and ml_ipod will treat it as audiobook if the genre is in the audiobooks genre list). But not combining several mp3 into one m4b.
