Here's the full story,

This means that Winamp on PS3 could actually happen.

More likely this will be used by scientific institutions who use PS3's as supercomputers. With the ability to develop on the PS3's native environment (Without the hypervisor locking out bits) they could really get some impressive results.

Plus they could use PS3 slims.

I just had to see if you'd come back as most new members come, post spam and are never heard from again.

To this day I still have trouble understanding why console games still exist. Why not just hook a laptop or computer tower to a regular TV?

Well everyone's computer is different but a console is the same for everyone so instead of having to pick hardware specs to support etc you know exactly what hardware you have and what you can do with it. People can take there games around others houses and play the game on there console without hoping it'll work.
Easier, more child friendly, less nerdy.

On Thanksgiving I wanted to play Left 4 Dead 2 with family on the big screen. Now I could've hooked up my PC to the TV, plug a controller into it (player one uses a mouse and keyboard), then fire up the game and enter a list of commands into the console to enable half broken splitscreen support, then another two commands start a campaign then connect player two to the game -- or I could just rent an XBOX 360 copy of the game and pop it in.

Guess which option I picked.

Consoles have and will still continue to sell simply due to one word: convenience.

Any company opens Dev SDK stuff so that they can get more developers and attract more customers. Now that they released SDK, chances are there that there will be winamp for PS.

I have trouble understanding why you'd use a computer to play video games when there are game consoles. I think the integrated game environment of game consoles is superior to a PC. Add that the variety and quality of games for game consoles is better.

....with a very few, very graphics intense exceptions where a good gaming PC struts it's stuff... laptops and normal desktops won't be up to the task.... I think consoles.

I'm not dissing general purpose computers. I just don't think they make a great gaming machine.

There's no reason to have winamp on a game console either.

Besides better graphics, you have to factor in the one major thing that consoles will never have: user-generated content. Try playing Team Fortress 2 on a console, then try the PC version. The amount of quality user-made maps, mods, game modes, etc. is astonishing. Fallout 3 is another great example. You really can't get that kind of gameplay experience on a console, simply because the game environment is so integrated (i.e. locked down), like you said.

Thankfully that line is slowly blurring, partially in thanks to the fact that modern Windows OSes like GPU power. A couple months ago I upgraded my grandma's pc with a new motherboard, power supply, 2.8GHz AMD Kuma Dual-Core, 500GB hard drive, and 8GB or DDR2 (like all grandmas she tends to click on everything, so the extra RAM helps offset all the crap that'll build up over time).

The whole upgrade cost me a little under $300 and didn't even include a dedicated graphics card, yet it runs games like Left 4 Dead 2 & Modern Warfare 2 just as well as an XBOX 360 at a comparable resolution & graphics quality settings.

With that being said, you give me $450 and I will build you a PC that'll outpower a 360 or PS3 any day. PC gaming is a lot cheaper than people want to believe (especially since games & accessories cost less and online play is free).

This is a sig of some nature.

Take the price of an average computer plus the price of the console, and you have more than what is necessary to just buy one computer that does it all better.

I'd much rather play games with a controller vs. a keyboard and mouse. Not only is it slightly more realistic, it's easier and I can lay my ass on the couch and game.

You can lay your ass on a couch with a wireless (or wired) controller with a console or computer. I do it quite often with my box. The computer can be used either with it's own monitors or with the TV. I use it with the TV quite often, especially when watching movies.

I lay my ass on the couch with an XBOX 360 controller when I play most PC games. Except when it comes to shooters. In those situations I lay my ass on the couch with a wireless mouse and one of these.

This is a sig of some nature.

Many institutions in academia, military and government are already using the ps3 with linux for super computing (source). As you mentioned this devkit will likely open up possible projects for the ps3 slim.
